A day trip to the resort of Saranda in Albania plus an optional archaeological tour of Butrinti that is organised by the boat company for an additional fee.

The coach picks you up in San Stefanos at 07:30 and on its way to Corfu harbour takes you through a very picturesque route to Corfu town. The boat trip to Albania lasts approx 1hr 30 mins and we suggest that you take some water and refreshments for the journey. When boarding the boat you will need to pay the cost for a local visa and the optional archaeological tour.

We opted for the tour, which includes a buffet lunch at a local taverna. Please bear in mind that there is a long time between boarding the boat and your buffet lunch at 3pm with little or no opportunity to get something to eat.

We do recommend that you pick up a snack before you leave or visit one of the kiosks in Saranda or you will go hungry!

The itinerary for the day was:

  • Coach from Saranda harbour to a local taverna for a drink

  • Coach trip to Butrinti National Park

  • Guided tour of the archaeological site (very good)

  • Coach back to local taverna for a buffet lunch at approx. 3pm

  • 45 mins for lunch with an optional guided tour of Saranda

  • Back to the harbour to board the boat back to Corfu

The archaeological tour took us to the rediscovered city of Butrinti which, represents a unique cultural treasure. We were split into groups and followed the tour guide around who told us everything about the place.

The sight of the fortifications date from the 6th century BC, and the amphitheatre from the 3rd century BC. The stone banks of seating of which 23 rows have been preserved would have held an audience of 1500 or more.

After the buffet lunch we followed a guide around Saranda, there was a lot of building work taking place, although a short walk away from the centre of town there were derelict buildings and decay. We were approached by local children selling bracelets for a euro each, if you say "no" they do go away but how can you refuse?

Our expectations were different to what we saw, the roads were terrible, decrepid old buildings and decay being masked by expensive re-development designed to turn Saranda into a tourist resort. A cultural shock that makes you realise just how lucky you are!
