Where to eat

Where to eat?

Tavernas & Hotels

The vast numbers of tourists visiting the island of Corfu have created a large number of eating places in this region with a varied menu of traditional Greek, English on offer.

We have visited the area for a number of years and always look out for a traditional Greek restaurant where the locals will go.

The town springs to life in the evening, everybody has deserted the beaches and are looking for places to eat and drink.

There are a great choice of restaurants and tavernas in San Stefanos each serving up a similar menu in their own individual style. Take your time, stop for a drink and study the menus on display.

At least one taverna will have Greek dancing, another live music or you could even find a bar and just sit down and watch Satellite TV.

The atmosphere is great! although if you just want a quiet night in with a take away pizza and a bottle of wine then this is catered for as well. Try the Sunset Taverna for a home made pizza or Town Pizza.

We have decided to include details of those tavernas we have visited, enjoyed and wish to visit again. So if your favourite is not listed it could be that we have not have been there, or if we have we just didn't like it!

If you have a hire car or like ourselves don't mind a walk then we have started to include tavernas situated in other local villages, which we consider are well worth visiting.

Other Villages

If you wish to explore there are many restaurants and tavernas outside of San Stefanos. We have included details of two of our favourites which during the daytime are within walking distance of San Stefanos.

The Brouklis is located in Arilas and is a traditional Corfiot taverna the sort of place where the locals eat and serves up something really special. The Dionysos is located in Afionas and has wonderful views to accompany its vast menu and lovely food.

Greek Wine

Many Corfiots make their own house wine. The grapes are picked in the Autumn crushed and left to ferment.

Greek wine has an aroma and a taste all of its own, the tavernas usually have a wine list that will satisfy most peoples taste and budget. with an average price of €8/9 a bottle you can certainly afford to sample a few before finding your favourite.

Retsina is cheap and widely available everywhere, whilst it will not win any prizes with a wine connoisseur its a good accompaniment to Greek Food. Makeaonikog is available in red, white and rose and is a reasonably priced wine which will accompany any dish. look for the label with a picture of a house and vineyard on it, is a simple way of finding this wine.
