Title: reporting back
Post by: sharris on May 24, 2009, 04:21:13 PM
well guys, back home  :'(

First of all, it is still the same wonderful, laidback, sunny place that we all love so much.

There are a couple of new things going on :

MYTHICA =  my good friends Jenny & Leo (from Romanza) opened their new restaurant. Located to the left at junction and virtually opposite Yiannis Grill. A pure delight, gorgeous food served with fresh vegetables instead of rice or chips. Good home cooking with an extensive choice and is no more expensive than any other restaurant. A touch of class. Do visit them and tell them Sarah sent you !!

MAMA MIA- opening night is monday 25th May. Pavlos from Zorbas, and is next door to Zorbas. the old Mexican. He has been working very hard the whole time i was there to get it up and running. Looks very nice and am sure it will be of the high standard that is Zorbas.

UN-NAMED AS YET - small bar right next door to SAN STEF Travel. looks like it will be a nice place to chill and watch the world go by. looks very close to finishing.

Well it has been a strange start to the season, most places are booked up, but there never seems to be many about at night. The locals are worried that people are not going out spending in evenings. There is some concern there for survival this season, so come on guys go spend some money. Also the sunbeds did not appear on the beach until the 16th may, this was due to some auction for the pitches on the beach and some arguements, why not do that in the winter then ????

Weather has been great for May, we had a couple of cloudy days but they were still hot, as we did the marathon walk to Avliotes and back !!!!

As usual have been greeted back by all our Greek friends and treated like royalty, and have once again met some lovely people, also met people who stayed at Teresa when we did last year. So all in all it has been a great fortnight, and now we are dying to go back again.

If anyone wants to ask anything please feel free, am sure i can help out with any queries.

Sarah H

P.S Nothing has gone up over there fronm last year, inc Ciggies etc so thats good for us.

P.P.S  Met MIKE T from this forum, and his family, a pleasure to speak to. x

Glad all is still as wonderful as ever. The new un named bar may be in a very good position for people watching - a hobby of many of us on here lol!!
The new Italian will be open by the time we go in August so will probably try there as well as Mythica.  :)
We must all support the locals as much as we can as they are all great people and always work very hard to make sure we all have a great time in there village. :)

BAD news is that the Mistral is shut. George's landlord wanted to put up the rent a lot as the tenancy was due for renewal. George declined and has gone back to fishing with his father.

Over the hill walk is troublesome as the cliff has fell in during winter and it is difficult to get over the fall, also the top of the hill is now covered with a fine powder dust, so expect a lot of cling ons during or after rain.

New snack bar opened up overlooking Arillas called Gravia (on hilltop) and a LOT of money has been spent on it, and overall is very good from experience and surveying others.

The SS sunbeds debacle ( Costa had his out for two days and was then threatened with jail, so had to remove them) was all about licences. The paperwork did not go out from the council in time, and were to start from last weekend, not when the first tourists came!!!

New taverna being built on hilltop road where a bungalow used to be. Still in scaffolding.

Arillas sea front almost wrecked during winter with the sea breaking on the beach road, and lots of rocks being thrown about smashing things. Made a mess of the beach too which has no sunbeds, so stay in SS.

Bit of a blow losing the Mistral - one of my favourite lunch spots, we'll miss George.
The Landlord will be sick now then - no income for being greedy in a recession!
Thanks to all above for the reports

George was one of the first half dozen people we met in San Stef and we've always made a point of seeing him even when he worked in a Sidari pool bar.

[/q Hi Sarah, That was a really good report. Nice to know what changes have taken place since 2008. Will keep going back each year, but If I ever see a Mc Donalds being built, I will consider going somewhere different. We go in August and it can't come soon enough

I hear that "Mad" Stefanos is re-opening the Magnet Bar - as a mini Macdonalds, his latest scheme!
It will be called Mag-Don-olds, hoping to net us all in.
It will sell Dons favourite Haggis-burgers in Mayo with a slice of gerkin!,
with a Goats cheese shake.

Read on another site it is quiet at the moment. I hope it starts to get busier for all the locals. When we go it's always nicely busy so I hope to see it the same.

The Agni tavernas got a huge plug from Toyah Wilcox on that TV show, but we tried them all and found them hugely expensive, and one that I will not name was positively a rip off. So they might have done it for themselves. Certainly in May there did not seem as many planes in the airport, nor as many folks around. Will see what I find in september.

Personally, I think that if you feel a place is poor value for money, you should express that opinion and name it,
then we can get other opposing or concurring opinions, which give a balanced viewpoint and help other travellers to the area!
No one wants to feel ripped off, and if they feel the pinch as a result of poor publicity, it's up to them to put their house in order.
I think to name and shame - is providing a public service, but it must be the truth and fair critisism!!

If you cadge a sunbed at the Athina, they now CHARGE €5 or you have to spend that amount in the pool bar.

Thanks for that Swedebasher - I hope that doesn't become the norm at other pools as well.

I would have thought that was quite normal. I wouldn`t expect to use any facilities without buying a couple of drinks. Fairly easy to spend 5 euros at the bar !

We always use Teresa pool where we stay anyway and nearly always buy lunch there unless we are out and about for the day.

They must have had some instances of people using the facilities there and not buying anything at all -which we would never do our selves.

Tend to use Thomas Bay pool the most. Always have a drink there in the day time and a few at night. It is only manners to spend there if using the facilities!

Leo & Jenny have MYTHICA just round the corner (LEFT) at Barras. Will try it in 2 weeks because all the comments regarding food and price are excellent!

In a way I am not surprised to hear that the Athina has started to charge if you don't buy drinks or food.
It is the best pool around and is right on the beach.
Obviously, people are taking advantage and bringing their own drinks, which is a no-no and rude!
Everyone needs to earn a living and it is only fair that you spend a little at the place, when you use the facilities.

Further to my report about the Athina, I now hear it is €5 EACH. The beach entrance is roped off and you get sent to the bar where you pay up and get tickets in exchange that you then hand over if making a purchase.

Calm down folks!!
Even if you can't walk through to the beach via the Athina, there are plenty of other ways to go!!
Back to the Athina - - - -
It seems strange that they would rope off the beach entrance and cut off the Lunch Trade!!
Can someone there please check this out for us all!!
The only thing I would regret is it makes it harder to call in at Glens (Aquarios),
on the way home from the beach for our daily refresher!! - - but is it true???
I don't see the problem with paying €5 each to spend the day at the pool as you can / will spend it in the bar!
We would do that anyway!!
Still a cheap day, and you would pay almost this on the beach for beds / Umbrella - -  and no using the €5 in a bar for lunch / drinks!!

I think we should design a T-Shirt and wear them, order off the forum,
then we have a chance to recognise each other now!! LOL
On the Agni site they have wrist bands which are bought from an animal charity in Corfu. Maybe we should all wear a red rose or something similar lol!!!! ;)

Zoe......... A little question... Is wearing a rose uncomfortable? Clenched etc!! LOL
Take a tip - remove the thorns first!! LOL
Bet it smells sweet though! Or did I mean sweat....... No sweet seems appropriate!
And you still never met each other!

Hi all, back after a 10 hour delay at Corfu Airport. Also taken a long time to catch up with the site. Too tired to drive on arrival at EMA so had a sleep for a while. Then work last night. Don't know what happened to the ones coming on holiday as we heard the plane didn't leave EMA so worse for them. Once they realised how long the delay was going to be we were bussed out to The Corfu Palace Hotel (5 star) and given a meal and refreshments. So a big hand for TC for that instead of being left at the Airport. It's the first major delay I've had going to Corfu so I've been lucky I guess. On a brighter note we arrived 25 minutes early and only waited 10 minutes for my case.
most updates seem to have been covered. No problem getting to the beach through Athina. Yiannis doing lamb on the spit at the new place on Saturdays. If in 3Ws say hello to the barmaid, the lovely Harriet, from me and you will be doing us a big favour.

Hope your holiday was ok. The worst delay we have ever had was a 5 hour delay going out to Corfu. It really did seem to drag.

Thanks Jules, no problem with the rest of the holiday, it was terrific. I won't mention how good the weather was oops, don't mention the weather as it's changed, so not so lucky for the ones there now.
Very good to see old friends and make some new ones. Ran into George (ex Mistral) a couple of times in Barcode and Bar38. He was looking very happy. Watch out ladies, he's looking tanned and toned after going back fishing. You have been warned.
Spiros from Sunset had been in hospital for an operation on some discs so didn't see him Don't want to tempt fate but there is some good news from Sunset.
zoe i triyed to find you in tomasbay but obveeusly i didnt hey this is good makes it much easyer

most updates seem to have been covered. No problem getting to the beach through Athina. Yiannis doing lamb on the spit at the new place on Saturdays. If in 3Ws say hello to the barmaid, the lovely Harriet, from me and you will be doing us a big favour.
We promise to do that Hendrix!!
How lovely? Sorry very fussy!!!
Very lovely and she provides you with beer. Cheers! Wish I could say hello in person.
Don, I'm hoping it was a typo when you wrote......On a serious NOT had a good time  and roll on Friday.
