San Stefanos news and views / Re: year after year
« on: March 24, 2014, 07:45:18 PM »
This year will be our 27th year visiting San Stefanos, our first holiday there was in 1987 so I reckon we have been there more than fifty times and
we still love it. We used to go somewhere different twice a year, then one year I said "why don't we try Corfu?" My husband wasn't too keen thought
it would be noisy and crowded, but I said "this place looks alright, doesn't look too big and busy" and that was it we were hooked.
Over the years we have made so many lasting friendships and I can't imagine our lives if we had never visited San Stefanos and met so many lovely people, and the nice thing is we keep in touch all year.

Thank you Waspman. Oh well it will be exciting going back.

I am beginning to get excited and am working out places to go, that we did not do with our son in tow.

We would like to go to the Achillieon Palace for sure. We have been to Mouse Island, Monastry in Paleokastrisa, and swum in the pool at Belle Vista. We did drive up the mountain and have eaten at the Agni restaurant a few times.

We would also like to spend a day/evening in Corfu Town, any opinions on how and where to park a hire car?

Thank you so much.
Best to park in the Old Port car park which is near to the centre of things.

Information and help please / Re: Ryanair cabin luggage
« on: March 06, 2014, 10:41:02 PM »
Has anybody got recommendations for lightweight cabin bags that will actually pass Ryanair's attempts to charge extra at any excuse.

Apparently, check-in staff get 50p per bag they can condemn. Outrageous.
Try Karabar Luggage.Amazon stock them but if you order directly from Karabar they don't charge postage.I bought one last year and was very pleased with quality and price.

Well the rain held off for the Avliotes Carnival and Clean Monday and it was a good turn out too..... loads of photos for those on FB have been posted by several and I believe its Pancake Day Shrove Tuesday in UK?  Might make some as I've plenty of lemons on the tree.
Have had a look at the photos and enjoyed picking out familiar faces in the crowd.Nice to see so many people supporting old traditions.

Lesley, you didn't remind us that today is the beginning of Lent in Corfu and everyone would be down on the beach this morning flying kites. When we've been there our kites have usually ended up in Albania.Today is called Clean Monday and it's anything but.People get blacked up and take delight
in blacking everyone else up.There is a carnival  in Avliotes and dancing and bonfires in the main square and everyone has a wonderful time. Wish I was there.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: This year's holiday promises.
« on: February 25, 2014, 07:26:54 PM »
Although we get out and about during the day we do tend to spend our evenings in the old part of the village. This year we are determined to throw
caution to the winds and venture to the "fleshpots" of San Stefanos on The Strip, perhaps see a tribute act!
I say this now, while I'm feeling brave, but I bet we'll get as far as Barras where it starts to get a bit lively and we'll turn tail and head back to the peace and quiet where we can chat to friends over a drink.Boring aren't we?

Best route up in my opinion is from crossroads towards Ozzy Oil/Perros etc. Just keep going. Its a decent surface with a couple of bends. The road then forks.
Take the right fork and follow the road straight on. You will see a sign for Gravia and it will be on your left as you reach the headland. Turn right for Akrotiri.
When you leave Akrotiri turn right then right again..... this road takes you on a steep but short downhill climb.
You will come to the Tsaros pool and bar on your right...... nice place for a swim and another pint.... all welcome
That's a nice walk Gav but there are shorter routes if you are really thirsty.

The easiest route I have found is a path just passed 3 w's bar. Nice steady climb up past some German apartments (can't recall what they are called)
Tried several different routes up to the top but never that one.Are the apartments called Uranos by any chance?

The Arrilas Forum has a topic on the go just now that I thought we might "borrow" and see if it creates any interest. The jist of it is

"Things I am going to do this year on holiday that I have intended to do on previous visits but never quite got round to".

Let's face it we all go with good intentions about places we are going to visit or trips we are going to take or tavernas we are going to eat in
and when we finally get there we spend most of our time blobbing out and before you know it the holiday's over.

We are fortunate to have a bath in the apartment we stay in ,so every evening Tshirts and undies that have been worn that day go in the bath I squirt some bubble bath in and leave overnight.Next morning the get swished around, rinsed and put on the airer on the veranda and they dry in no time.
