Zimmer's top 5
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:54:49 AM »
Well I expect SS to enter the top 5 judging by everyone's remarks, but there are other places, so heres my top 5 based on Beauty, ambience and food etc [ especially the etc ! ]

5 ] Kos town - but thats 1978 when tourism had started and everything was wonderfully authentic and nieve

4] Three Cliffs Bay - Gower Pen - is there a more beautiful place in the UK? magical, if only we had the weather

3]Kassiopi - Very nice,quite sophisticated in a way

2] Skala Potamia - Thassos - great tavernas, lovely horse shoe bay

1] Polis - Cyprus - fantastic in every way and driving is a pleasure too

others

Tsilvi,Zante - bit too commercialised for me
Gouvia - Crete - we found it very arid
Dassia and Sidari - ok , nice hols wouldnt go back, Sidari is over-developed and loud
Menorca - I like Menorca but I think you need to be choosy about the resorts and avoiding the football shirts
Carvoeiro - could be a great holiday if youre fairly near the town centre
Majorca - ok, doesnt do it for me

We went to DALYAN, near Dalaman, in Turkey.
This must be the San Stefanos of Turkey!! It is located on a river not on the Beach!
Don't let this put you off - to the right it opens into a great Lake - fabulous & loads to do,
we rented a boat with Julie and Ian, (just been to SS), for £10 each couple for the Day!! Inc. Lunch!!

To the left on the river, a Water Bus takes you meandering through reed lined waterways to Turtle Beach,
a 30 min chilled out way to travel, with great views - they filmed the African Queen there.
We went that way and also on the 10 Min. Dolmus (Minibus) ride to the fantastic Beach, even longer than San Stefs!!
But - like San Stefanos - the people are all really nice there, and no badgering you to "eat here" like the rest of Turkey!!
So it gets my vote as an alternative holiday, and people go back each year as well!!
Happy Days in Agios Stefanos, Avliotes, Corfu!! TonyCo1

Zimmer, I have to agree re Skala Poamia, just got back from a week there (first visit) on Sunday, the beach further down at Golden Beach is beautiful, Skala Potamia village is brilliant, some lovely bars and taverna's, Karambusa was our favourite. Great place really laid back and friendly, and not too touristy, reminds me of Georgiopoulis in Crete.

Ignoring San Stef which is to us the best resort we have visited the top 5 resorts for us are:-

1) SCALA Kefalonia....... Laid back, quiet and ultra friendly. From our late night arrival and search for food answered by a chef deciding to start to cook again to the 1/2 bottle of Ouzo given on leaving we loved the place.

2) ORNOS Mykynos...... Again laid back and full of good food. We have this love affair with quiet places.

3) SAN EUGENE Tenerife...... Again quiet but close enough to walk into the madness of Playa De Las Americas if that's what tickles your fancy. If we could afford a winter home this would be the place. Of course there is always Emma & Charlie at the Original!

4) MASPALOMAS....... Gran Canaria.......... Flat and very very quiet for a winter break. Nice to call into Greek Village (on the road to Playa del Ingles) for a refreshing Mythos and Chicken Gyros in Metaxa. Well worth a visit. Our favourite restaurant outside Greece.

5) TINGAKI Kos.....  Again this is so so quiet and so laid back it is virtually horizontal. Not much there but always had a great meal and as everywhere in Greece the locals were ultra friendly.

Do not likes are anywhere like Benidorm , Magalluf,, bastions of noise, Brit food and bl**dy football shirts!
