Mavrodaphne
« on: February 28, 2014, 07:16:08 PM »
Just curious to know if anyone has ever tried Mavrodaphne? It's a strong sweet red wine which, although it's Greek, is quite hard to find in many Greek holiday resorts. It's actually the only red wine I like. We were pleasantly surprised to be given a glass after our meal at the Nafsika last year! The waiter was astonished we could identify it. Must have thought we were wine buffs, ha ha......

In fairness as a white wine gal not sure in the bars in resort but certainly more than easily available in the supermarkets depending on which year you would want would depend on price etc...... Cambas wines (main supplier) a Greek supplier distribute this wine which is a renowned wine - for it's red sweet taste - all over Greece as well around the world.....

Yes, I get it from Tesco or Morrisons in the UK, but have found it hard to obtain in Greece. I did find it last year in a supermarket is SS, but it was more expensive than in the UK!

I think most resorts in Greece tend to sell locally sourced stuff,

Went on a great trip whilst in Kefalonia....... Coach trip to Argostoli with a stop off at a vineyard on the way. Lovely hour or so trying the wines (apart from the wasps circling round!)

Maybe easier to find in the tavernas as well as Mavrodaphne is used in several Greek Dishes.

If you did want to visit some of the main and well known Corfiot Vineyards then probably a car would be best as 3 of the main/popular ones are centrally located towards Pelekas and the Ropa Valley you could try :-

- Theotoki Vineyard
- Ambelonos
- Trikala

Or then if you are here in September we also make our own from our vines in garden, there is the Arillas Wine Festival too.

I will however keep a look out re generally Mavrodaphne around resort..
