Avilotes
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:42:03 PM »
Hi everyone,
We are thinking of walking to Avilotes from SS during our stay, does anyone know how many miles it is?
We never got around to doing the walk in 2008.
Many thanks.

Thanks Spesh, only two miles, that is good to hear. Last time we tried to take a short cut at the crossroads instead of walking on the road to Avilotes where we came accross a small village with a church. A dog ran out at us from one of the houses barring its teeth, frightened us to death so we abandoned the walk. Will go via the road this time.

It's about 6-7 mins by car (normal steady driving), if that helps.
A nice way to walk is to go there via the tennis Courts, past Mythos and Rose Garden Apartments, then back along the coast top road (Downhill from Romanza),
& no killer walk up the big hill on the way there.

Tony, I stayed at the Mythos apartments last year and that is the route my wife and I would take.  Very tranquil.  Lilly, take a look at the local walks on the San Stef site.  They are very informative.

If you are going to walk up and the easy way up is definitely through the olive groves past the Rose Garden, try and be up there around lunchtime and sit and have something to eat at Ilias Taverna in the centre of the village. There is a lovely terrace looking out over the valley. distance is around 4.5 kilometres. Walk back along the road to the Romanza for nice views over the village. We stopped at the Romanza for beer at the pool bar as it was getting a little hot and I had to take on some fluid. My excuse anyway :D

Too far for us to walk but we drove through most days.  Glad to see it looks like they are building a bypass for Avliotes as earlier today, on the way back to the airport, we had a 'mexican standoff' between our Thos Cook coach and a Thompson coach.  We lost and the driver had to reverse part of the way back to let Thompson through!

Think they all (bus and coacg drivers) deserve a medal for the journeys they do under the circumstances.  If there were proper road controls in place like the yellow lines which are for no parking but no-one polices, everyone's lives including the passengers and the other drivers on road would be a lot easier. Thats why I bought a small car this year.......
