Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Spoilt for choice 2014

I may have misunderstood the purpose of the "where to eat in San Stefanos" section of the forum but when we were planning our trip here back in nz, most of the reviews were yonks old. So i just thought i should bring a few of them up to date on the basis of our personal experience. I have tried to be reasonably careful (not alw ays with success) but informative.
Last night we booked (ourselves) into the Greek night at the 2 Stars. It was, in our opinion, a terrific evening with a skilled display of ethnic dances. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, with perhaps the one exception of being persuaded to join in. Thirty years ago, even with four left feet between us, we may have got away with it but i think we left one or two casualties behind! The hospitality was first rate and the prices were very reasonable.

San Stef has a beautiful beach, perfect for kids and i would love to bring my grandchildren here, but can i ask when it became a nudist beach? We took a walk along there this afternoon and we had hardly got past the serried ranks of sunbeds and there was wedding tackle everywhere. I am no prude but it was like the butchers shop full of Christmas turkeys in every direction. Just a surprise really.

Tuesday evening was our trip to the 7th Heaven restaurant at Logas Beach. Our table had been booked by San Stefano Travel and it was ideally situated. The food was really very good, and well presented. The meals were about 20% more expensive than in Agios Stefanos but you expect to pay something of a premium for the location and Lyn's pork fillet in orange sauce with kumquats was superb. The sunset was pretty spectacular though, with true objectivity, i think the Kariotahi Beach sunset has the edge.
If you do go there and intend to stay for the sunset, wear or take plenty of insect repellant, the mozzies attack in packs.

Thanks. It is a real pleasure to have somewhere to share our experiences with others visiting, or revisiting, this little piece of paradise.

I don't usually bother reporting on our lunches, though we have enjoyed some excellent repasts, but today after a very long walk we arrived at Taverna O Manthos. This was where we had our first ever meal in San Stafanos, and indeed in Greece, back in 1986. Our first impression was of a character larger than life who looked as though he could throw his arms around the world. He has not really changed very much, if a little greyer, but then who isn't? He genuinely recognised us and made us welcome as only Greeks can. Lyn had feta baked in the oven, which was "to die for" and i had kalamari in garlic with a tomato and cucumber salad, plus a few cold ones. And that view. Bliss. We will be back for dinner one of these evenings.

Today we ventured on our longest walk yet. Up the track through the olive groves to the Avliotes road. It is very tough going in places, especialy for us oldies, but it is well worth the effort. From the crossroads we walked to the village of Avliotes, past Elias Taverna (where we have enjoyed two excelent lunches) to the satellite bar where we took the track on the left through the olives. Taking every left turn we arrived at Logas beach. The view is breathtaking. We had a couple of cold ones before returning by the same route. Overall it is about a 3 hour round trip but it is really well worth it and we will be doing it again. Tomorrow night we are booked on the trip to Seventh Heaven fron San Stefanos Travel, which should get us there just a little quicker.

Sunday night we returned to the "Little Prince". Lynda prefers to be immersed in the local culture, traditional music and dancing, than karaoke - and i have to agree with her on that. We had a wonderful evening. The food was really well cooked and poli nostimo and we could not have been better received or looked after by the team there. We had to cut the evening a bit short as the wind got up a tad and Lyn had not taken a jacket with her but it was very enjoyable.

Last night we gave the Brusko a try. Very friendly and helpful staff and the meal was very enjoyable. My wife particularly liked her Moussaka. If time permits we will return.

We did a lot of walking today so, because it was handy to our accommodation and looks so inviting, we chose to eat at the Summer Dream. Not an inspired choice. With the greatest of respect to those that manage this web site i think the "where to eat in San Stefanos" could benefit from an update.

Last night we paid a visit to Beer o Clock. We were made very welcome by Spiro and Costas. We both selected something off the grill and the food was really first rate. Perhaps a more subdued atmosphere than a couple of the other restaurants but there is nothing wrong with a quiet evening if the food and service are good, which they most certainly were.

There is a saying that you should never go back, i guess meaning that the further back in time an experience, the rosier the tint in the specs.
My wife Lynda and i first visited Ag Stef in, i think, 1986. The first year that Thompson Holidays were here. We stayed in the Panorama apartments at the top of the hill. I think for our first week we were the only two tourists here, at least that is how it felt. There was only a handful of places to eat. The Nafsica, Manthos, and the Waves - though in those days the Waves was exclusively seafood and frequented more by the locals. There was also the Margherita bar (now gone) the Sunset Taverna (now gone) and George's Taverna at the t- junction (also now gone). I think that was it. The people were the most friendly and welcoming they could be to two very inexperienced travellers and that memory has stuck with us more than any other. We visited a few more times over the next 10 years or so and watched the place grow. We now live in New Zealand and this is the first time we have been back in over 20 years.
The place has grown, a lot, and changed, a lot, but the people seem as genuinely warm and friendly now as they did over 30 years ago. Some are the same people we knew over 30 years ago. This is something of a nostalgia trip for us and we are here for 3 weeks. Already it has been worth almost 30 hours in the air.
So glad to be back in Ag Stef.

Last evening's dinner adventure was to Zorbas and it was an excellent selection. Their menu includes some atypical choices, including pork fillet with prunes in a mavrodaphne sauce and Krassato. We both agreed they were poli nostimo and we would choose them again. Some traditional entertainment   added to a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Last night we chose the Nafsica. It has certainly smartened up since we were last there, the outdoor area is very pleasant. We even renewed an aquaintance from over 30 years ago which was a real bonus. Lyn had Sofrito ani i the steak royale. Both were well presented, well cooked, and very enjoyable. The service was cheerful and attentive. Diners were entertained with some dancing but you had to be sat to the right hand side of the out door seating area for the best view . Lyh is determined to book a table on that side for the next time. She does enjoy being fully immersed in the experience.
