San Stefanos news and views / What was it like in 2022?
« on: November 27, 2022, 01:07:40 PM »
We were very lucky to have a couple of stays in the village - one in July which was to take in a landmark birthday and the other in August which was a Covid rollover.

The week in July was very much on the breezy side with one day quite showery. However, it was great to be back again and still thoroughly enjoyable as always.

August's three weeks were again on the breezy side for a few days but still quite hot as is usually the case at that time of season.

The place was relatively busy but not bulging at the seams as many of the bars and restaurants appeared on the quiet side in the week before filing up a bit more at the weekends.

As for prices it seemed like food in the shops or when eating out was around 10-20% higher than our last visit but alcohol prices remained about the same or with just a fractional rise in some outlets.

From an independent point of view the dilemma is even more difficult this time.

But it looks like prices for flights are at least 25% higher than last year as things stand.

Well, the webcam has been down for so-called maintenance for over a month as far as I can see!

Hopefully it's not just me

Could they please give the live Skyline webcam a quick wipe!

As if by magic, it has now come back

Maybe the grey old British weather is finally getting to me

Thanks

A pertinent explanation from Anna and very well said.

For the couple of years I have known Kostas he has been one of the most helpful and polite individuals in San Stefanos.

I cannot speak about the unfortunate incident that kicked this off as I was obviously not there, but there is sometimes a feeling among some that a small minority of visitors do seem to think the place belongs to them.

Kostas was trying to run a small business and as Anna so rightly stated was fully licenced - he deserves respect and not ill-informed comment. Unfortunately sometimes a few people do not seem to think about where they may set themselves up on what has to be described as fairly expansive and wide (at present) beach.

I wish Kostas the best for the future as I understand this maybe his last year. He will be sorely missed by many as he offered a service on that part of the beach that was generally very well received.

A sincere and big thank you for Relaxing Point over the last two summers.

The Jet2 takeover of San Stefanos looks set to continue as the word on the street is that Barras is going with them for next year.

Anyone else heard that?

As the days edge closer to holiday time, the Brexit roulette wheel is still spinning and keeping the exchange rate low

It's all a bit chaotic as far as exchanging is concerned but one thing for sure there does not seem to be a short term solution with all the squabbles continuing

Do we go in now and exchange at around 1.14/15 or will it get higher?

Anybody got a clue?

It's all a bit of a gamble at the moment in the pound/euro stakes as no one seems to know which way things are going.

However as of 10pm this morning John Lewis compared more than favourably with TravelFX which is normally the best

John Lewis 1.1482

TravelFX  1.1441

Have to say I very much agree with Jimbo

We have used restaurant for many years now and there has never been any sort of problem.

And if they can do anything to help, Yiannis and Vaso are very forthcoming.

Will very much back be back supporting them in August

The clock, as they say, is ticking and it will soon be the new season

It's been done before but which are the best restaurants in San Stefanos ?

Of course it's all down to opinion, but here goes anyway

Our first port of call has always been Yiannis Grill and Restaurant on the Arillas road just before Town Pizza.

If there is better prepared food or better value in the village I have missed it.

There is always the warmest of welcomes and what's on offer is very competitively priced.

Second in is Manthos on the road heading to the harbour which is pretty basic but has a very traditional feel (at least, the that was the case when Manthos was in charge but he retired in the autumn - so it we will have to wait and see how things are under the new banner).

Anybody with slightly deeper pockets should give Delfino Blu a try as it's hard to fault what is usually on offer and everything is served very professionally and with a smile.

Yes, as I have already alluded to the fact that it is a bit more expensive than the other eateries but 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'!

A couple of years ago Fantasea would have made the cut but I must admit to being a bit disappointed on our only visit last summer. Perhaps it was just an off night and will probably give the place another chance as it has been good in the past.

Others worth a mention Waves (good service), Beachcomber (also good service) and if you just want a snack earlier in the evening try the Havana Bar

It's a two horse race in the euro stakes

You either wait and keep your fingers crossed our careerist self serving so-called politicians finally get their act together.

Or go in now and take the punt at around 1.13 as that will look decidedly rosey if we hit the no-deal skids.
