Where to stay / Margaritas apartments
« on: June 10, 2022, 10:14:13 PM »
Tomorrow we leave this beautiful island and travel on to the UK. We arrived on 23rd May after a truly exhausting 45hr trip from New Zealand via LA and Toronto. We arrived, but my luggage didn't, and still hasn't. We stayed in the Margaritas apartments right down by the beach. Our apartment was large, airy, well appointed and very comfortable. We made very good use of the included air conditioning as well as the day beds in  the garden. I highly recommend this as a place to stay.
However i think the most enduring memory i will take with me is the help and support i received from Noula, Aline, Lesley and the team at San Stefano Travel. Nothing was too much trouble from checking the airport everyday for my missing suitcase to getting my emergency prescription filled with essential medication. I am very grateful for all of their help.
We return to NZ on 16th July and i wonder if my suitcase will have caught up with me by then?

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Zorbas
« on: June 09, 2022, 11:11:17 PM »
We ate our evening meal at Zorbas tonight. There is no escaping the showmanship of the guys there, but the real highlight of the evening was the food. Lyn had pork fillet in honey and i had the beef with aubergine topped with feta and both meals were superb. A thoroughly enjoyable evening and we got to watch the lightning show from our balcony.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / The Waves
« on: June 05, 2022, 09:57:15 PM »
Lyn and i chose to have our meal at the waves tonight. It is the only place we have seen with beef with aubergines and she wanted to try it, and i fancied a pork chop. My chop was very acceptable but her beef dish was beautiful. She thoroughly enjoyed it. The draught beer was dashed good too!

We ate at the Olympia tonight, the first time since 2017. Lyn had Sofrito and i had lamb with spinach and feta. Both meals were beautiful and the service was great. We will definitely go back.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Barolo restaurant

A very good question. I have looked at so many menus since then, they have a tendency to blur! The dishes we each had were Greek, or Greek inspired. We can obtain Italian relatively easily back home in NZ so we try and stick to Greek cuisine here if we can.

Information and help please / Re: Avliotes Pharmacy
« on: May 24, 2022, 12:29:08 PM »
Thanks folks. We are staying at the Margaritas and Noula has offered her assistance, so if my case does not turn up i can try and sort out replacement meds. One of them is a bit exotic, so i hope it is available here. It has proved such a mission just getting here, our long haul flights were cancelled 3 times, the last being on thursday whilst we were at the check in desk at the airport! So we had to go home and find new flights. We were originally due to arrive here last Friday.
Thanks for your responses. It is so good to be finally back here.

Hi. My wife and i arrived from New Zealand last night. Sadly my luggage is still somewhere in canada, along with the bulk of my medication. Assuming it does not turn up soon, i will be in some difficulty. If i can get a script emailed from my practice in Auckland, would a/ the local, pharmacy dispense it?.
Also, i have no clothes!!! :'(
Many thanks

Hi Jimbo. I too am a born and bred Yorkshireman, having been born along 'essle road in 'Ull. You could say i have moved from God's own county to God's own country. I still have mushy peas with my red snapper and chips.

Hello Winkie. In 2017 we flew via Hong Kong to Heathrow, about 26 hours. Overnight at Heathrow then BA from Heathrow to Corfu, about 3.5hrs. This year flight choices were somewhat limited and we were due to fly Auckland to Hong Kong to Zurich to Heathrow which was going to be a couple of hours longer. The journey is pretty exhausting, especially at our age.
As to the vaccine, it is a very good question why we have not yet even got supplies in the country. The Government would have it that they have allowed those countries which needed it most to get supplies whilst we benevolently hung back. In my own opinion, they were just too darn slow out of the blocks, as with so many other aspects of the Covid-19 response. Don't buy the press fawning over our Saint Jacinda of the Virus. She talks it up very well, but what saved us was our location and isolation. We may get supplies at the end of March.

We were really looking forward to 3 weeks in the Margaritas apartments from the end of May 21. Sadly we have had to cancel our trip. New Zealand, our home for almost 20 years, has done remarkably well in defeating the Covid-19 virus. This has been helped in large part by a very secure closure of our borders. All arrivals in NZ have to spend at least 14 days in Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ). Places are limited and are currently booked solid to 31st May. Returning Holiday makers are given very low priority, so if we left here we run a very real risk of not being able to get back home on our scheduled flights. We booked these last September, in the hope of a more virus-free world than we have and our borders may not now re-open until the end of 2021.

Noula has been very understanding and we have re-booked at Margaritas apartments for 3 weeks next year. Hopefully the vaccines will help loosen Covids grip on the worlds throat.

We will greatly miss San Stef this year and wish all there a happy and successful season. See you all in 2022.

I am a frequent contributor in the Yammas Bar but not much elsewhere these days, though keeping up with the news from San Stef helps keep my spirits up. We last visited in 2017 and stayed at the Margarita apartments for 3 weeks. We had a wonderful time. We are booked to come back next year but the prospects are not looking too shiny at the moment. You may well have seen that we in NZ are back in lock down, due to slack border management. Our major concern is the availability, and cost, of long-haul flights to get us back to our favourite place in Greece.
Fingers crossed we will be back at the end of May next year. In the interim i will continue to enjoy your varied ramblings.

Sadly we are unable to make 2020, the cost of flights is prohibitive to make it annually. But we are coming back in 2021 and have secured 3 weeks in the Margaritas Suites again and we are so looking forward to that. Insofar as meals are concerned there are so many excellent options, but probably Manthos for our first. We have so many happy memories of great nights there in the 80s. Hope to meet up with some of you folk too.
Till then, kalo taxidi.
