Where to stay / Staycations
« on: June 17, 2021, 06:24:36 PM »
An interesting phone in on BBC Radio 2 (well I enjoy Jeremey Vine anyway)  It would seem Staycation means you stay at home in your own home and garden area.  As opposed to the new Americanism via Media outlets which says this means gander around your own country.  It would seem Staycation means stay home and not meaning have a holiday in the UK whilst 50 years ago we all did go on holiday in the UK we never had a staycation, I really can't remember my father saying this Summer we are haiving a staycation he said OK for our Summer Holiday we are going to.......we are going on holiday, be it Devon, Cornwall, the Lake District up to Scotland we said we were going on holiday... Just interested in the power of Social Media and how they have changed our own British language into more Americaisms

San Stefanos news and views / Posting to Greece/Corfu
« on: April 06, 2021, 09:38:55 PM »
A rather strange post perhaps.... However since Brexit due to new Import controls as UK is no longer within the EU so a TCN. Many I know have friends they post things to them over the Winter here and are always welcomed. However even my plastic bottle tops are now under this new criteria. So when sending anything over, please apply and make a Customs declaration at the Post Office in UK and show on the envelope it is a gift and under the worth of 20 euros. Otherwise everything is now liable for import tax and VAT so what you send as a gesture may cost the recipient more then the worth of the package,  payable then here. Small packages less then 20 euros declared and cards are OK.
I believe foodstuffs are no longer acceptable via the Post..........

Out and About / Scop's Owl
« on: March 26, 2021, 09:56:12 PM »
ln the early hours of the night/morning I was awoken to the cry of the Scops Owl. I had a little chuckle rolled over and went back to sleep perhaps it was around 03.00 hours.
Why the post and why the chuckle well as many know I work as a receptionist in one of the apartment blocks in Agios Stefanos.
This particular morning when I arrived around 09.15 ish! A gentleman was sat outside waving his arms and being very vocal. Actually quite hostile and rude in fairness but hay all in a days work!
This perhaps was 10 years ago but every time come Spring I hear the owls I smile and recall the conversation which went.
Him: Did you hear that noise last night?
Me: politely - sorry no but I live in the neighbouring village approx 6kms away.  What was the noise?
He: All night long a fire alarm was going off I demand to change rooms.
Me: Let me come over with the maintenance man maybe it is the battery in your room maybe the fire alarm.

So we went to room, no problem with alarm so the plot thickens. Couldn't change rooms as always we are full, thus explained. Man not happy......

As the course of the day went on I wandered around the pool. There were as always many guests whom have stayed and return for many years some every year for more than 20 years so I politely asked :Did anyone have any noise issues in the early hours with fire alarms or other noises? No one could shed any light on the issue until one guest said Oh Lesley that would be 'our' Scops Owl.  We went inside and put a search on You Tube and yes this could be the noise the said Gentleman was angry with.

I found the man and asked him to listen to the video - Yes he said that's it.  I explained and he said well you better shoot it tonight as I will be complaining to my Tour Operator. Of course once again I explained and said I was not in a position to and I couldn't shoot it.
Man departed huffing, puffing and clearly not satisfied with me!
He did complain to his rep not sure what she said but we did get a complaint letter which I answered with the link on You Tube.
So I didn't know whether to post this on the Joke thread or just to warn you we have Scops Owls here in resort and love them......

San Stefanos news and views / English Baked Beans, Bananas & Chinese Shops.
« on: February 26, 2021, 07:15:35 PM »
Now living here of course I enjoy my Greek feta and other local things. We grow our own veggies season to season and enjoy this.  However our man on line that delivers 'other stuff' this may include Bisto Gravy Granules and Heniz Ketchup, English Baked Beans and Bacon amongst many other things is still waiting how to go forward........
You must consider he supplies local supermarkets too around resort not just SS.  Maybe if you are here for a week or 2 you may not think about this so much.  But you need your UK beans and Bacon for your English Brekkie? If we go into importing with VAT etc how much will the costs increase?  No Idea?
Now previously I ordered via a UK website our clothes on line via M&Co, M&S , Next etc but now we are having to pay import duty and VAT.  This makes it no longer viable to support UK companies.  I could go to one of the many Chinese Shops (poor quality but Greek Government backed I believe) shops springing up everywhere.  So my dear friend if you see me in torn rags you will know why.  LOL.
Now back in the early 80's when I was a rep here we couldn't purchase Bananas only the green, bitter small variety via the Cretan merchants.  My father was a Greengrocer he always arrived at the airport with lovely Bananas for the customs men and us as reps.  It was like Christmas mid season.
We also wait and see on this issue too.......

From 18th July the Government has introduced the wearing of facemaks by employees and customers in all supermarkets in Greece.  Failure to comply incurs a 150 euros fine.  Facemasks as previously posted are also to be worn on Public transport and taxis.
