Information and help please / Ryanair
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:24:52 PM »
Hi all,

Ryanair have today released their flights for 2014 if anyone is thinking of booking with them.
Do they only do flights or holidays too? I only ask because I have read that they quite frequently cancel flights altogether with sometimes giving only 4 hours notice so this really puts me off booking with them and if no alternate flights available then although you do get your money back your holiday would be ruined [We are travelling independently]. I know any airline can cancel flights but the likes of Thomsons/Thomas Cook are also providing package holidays so it would be doubtful that they would cancel  the flight completely.
Any help much apprieciated.

San Stefanos news and views / Corfu airport check in info
« on: July 04, 2013, 12:23:36 AM »
Hi all,

I know that we are all aware of the queuing outside although this year we were not on a package holiday so we just walked straight through to check in however I just wanted to make you all aware of the importance of making sure that the check in staff at Corfu actually look at your tickets and not just your passports when checking in. The check in lady took our passports to check but when tried to give her our tickets she said that she did not need them. She then declared that our suitcases were 2kg overweight and we would have to pay so I then showed her our tickets and pointed out the extra luggage allowance that we had paid for in advance so we were actually underweight by 3kg, I then pointed to our tickets and showed her our pre booked seat numbers and I am glad that I did because others on the plane did not get the seats that they had pre booked as they had been given to others who had checked in before them, I always thought that the pre booked seats would show up on the seating plan so that they could not be given to others or can the check in staff over ride the system? It certainly seems so.
Fortunately in our section of the plane the ones who had been put in the wrong seats agreed to move so the ones who had pre booked could get what they had paid for.
So make sure if you have booked extra luggage or seats that the check in staff actually look at your tickets.

Hi all, we had some really good meals this year in SS.
Olympia was our favourite and dined here at least four times, staff very attentive and friendly.
Two stars was also excellent and we were given a free half carafe of wine, free cake and a free cream dessert with every meal.
Beachcombers was also very good and was no more expensive than any other restaurant.
Yiannis also very good along with tasty corner, waves on the beach,Nafsika hotel and the little prince.

Barras was just average tbh.

I have got to give a mention also for Town pizza, I am not really a fan of pizza's but I really enjoyed the ones here, we had some great conversations with the owner Stamatis who is at present struggling for trade so if anyone likes pizza or pasta then please pay him a visit.

Also enjoyed two lunches in Avilotes at the Ilias taverna and we had many, many lunches at the Aquarius bar.
We drove to old Perthia (abandoned village) and had a great lunch at Foros Taverna, wow this place was fantastic and as if time had stood still, amazing place and the food was the best we have tasted, we received a warm welcome from the owner along with free walnut cake drizzled in honey.

We also walked to Afionas and there is a new tavern there ( I think it was called sunset tavern) with amazing views and excellent food, when you get to the village square, walk through the narrow streets and it is signposted.

Wish that we were still there now enjoying the amazing food, company and of course the warm sun.

Information and help please / Acabar
« on: June 01, 2013, 08:54:47 AM »
Good morning all,

I read a recent review or Thomas Bay on TA and the poster mentioned the  'Acabar' which in their view had the best entertainment that they had ever seen. I don't recall this bar during our last visit to SS  of a few years ago, has anyone been and is the entertainment good?
Thanks for any info.

Information and help please / Massage on the beach
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:19:30 PM »
Has anyone had a massage on the beach, I have seen them walking up and down but up to now I have never had a massage. I have been having a lot of problems with my spine/back and have been seeing a chiropractor, I asked her if the massage would benefit me whilst on holiday and she said if they were gentle then it could help, the last thing I need is any heavy plummeting but a light massage may help so if anyone has used them and can advise then I would apprieciate it.

Out and About / Lake Korrison/Halikounas beach.
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:06:47 PM »
I have just been looking at places for us to visit in Corfu and came accross photo's of Korrison lake and the nearby beach of Halikounas, it looks really stunning, has anybody been there and if so are there taverna's nearby for a spot of lunch? I have located it on the map so I know where it is, we once made it to Pelekas on a quad bike but this time we are going to hire a car and make the most of our three weeks. Thanks in advance for any help.

Information and help please / Thomas Cook advancwed passenger info
« on: October 10, 2012, 06:03:01 PM »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has recently  travelled withTC, when I was looking at submitting our advanced  passenger information Corfu/Greece was not one of the places that appeared on the drop down list of countries that require this info, am I right in thinking that we do not need to supply this info for Greece/Corfu, when we last visited Corfu 2010 with Thomsons we did have to supply this info likewise when we visited Thassos 2011 and Crete this year, hope someone can enlighten me! We have booked flight and apartments independently for next year.

Also I noticed that you can print off your boarding pass but what I want to know is are we still able if we wish get our boarding pass in the traditional way at the airport when we check in, checking in online is of no advantage to us has we are always there early and have booked seats.

Any help will be much apprieciated. x

Where to stay / Kapetanios
« on: September 04, 2012, 10:00:41 PM »
Hi everyone,

We are thinking of staying at the Kapetanios apartments next year, I was just wondering if anyone has stayed there recently?
There are no studio's left for when we want to stay so the choice is a 2 bed apartment sleeps 2-4 with balcony or 2 bed apartment sleeps 2-5 with balcony, does anyone know if these rooms are in the old block or the new refurbished block and also do the said rooms all have a view, have read trip advisor reviews/review sites, most reviews excellent but there is nothing clear on which rooms are which plus some people have commented that they were not happy with the old block and it's position near a road and a private residential property and felt that they had no privacy and some no view, what we would really like is a nice view from our balcony , anything else we are not fussed over such as missing knives or forks, clinging shower curtains or even the sound of Gavlah making his way back up to the Romanza, ha ha, nope just a nice view and we are happy.

Thanks in anticipation.x

Out and About / Walks etc
« on: September 06, 2010, 08:35:11 PM »
We went on some lovely walks during our visit to SS.
We started the walk to Avliotes past the tennis courts then through the olive groves[quite a steep climb] then at the crossroads just past the football pitch we took the road to Avliotes, you just have to be mindful on the bends and take a little care. Once there we had a walk around the village, visited the church then enjoyed a lovely lunch at Ilias restaurant which overlooked a beautiful valley.
We also walked to Agios Georgios North via Arillis then through Afionas stopping at Dionysos restaurant overlooking the bay before walking down to Agios Georgios. It was a fairly long walk mostly up a steep hill on the way there but we stopped often for drinks or to admire the wonderful views.
We walked over the headland to Arillis a few times and also through the olive groves to cool off.
We also walked to the new harbour on a very windy day and it was very sheltered there so we stayed for a while watching the fishermen go about their daily business.
We hired a quad bike again and visited Paleokastrica stopping for lunch then onto a beach where we relaxed for a while. Then some off road through the olive groves with sterling moss at the helm.
There are some lovely walks in and around SS and the views are spectacular.

Where to stay / Tsaros apartments
« on: September 06, 2010, 08:04:30 PM »
This was the first time we had ever been self-catering, having previously been AI,half board or bed and breakfast and I must say that we are now converted. We liked the freedom of having breakfast on the balcony and ocassionally having breakfast at the pool bar, there was never any rush. We also liked the fact that we could enjoy our evening meal when we felt hungry enough to enjoy it, it was all about relaxation, chilling out and having all the time in the world to do has we pleased. It was great not to feel tied to the same routine every morning/night and it was great to be able to visit many restaurants of an evening. It was a refreshing change and we are are now done with the homing pigeon type of holiday. I am so glad that we tried self-catering and enjoyed the freedom to try different places to eat, drink and visit.
We were met by the friendly Nikos who took us up to our apartment. The apartment was spotless, well equipped with lovely views. Nikos, Thanasis, Christina and all of the staff could not have been more welcoming without being in your face, you just asked and they did their best to help you. It was just so relaxed and friendly and it suited us down to the ground. 'Later' and 'no problem' was like music to our ears. The food at the poolside bar was very good and the pool kept spotlessly clean by Nikos. We mostly went to the beach for a sunbathe and swim because we much prefer this to sitting around a pool all day then again we are the active type so we can understand that some people may prefer the pool to the beach and there are some lovely pools in SS and most are open to everybody which means you get a choice.
Many people return to the apartments year after year and this is due to the peace and tranquility of the place and the town is only a short stroll away.
The hill was no problem for us especially of an evening when the weather was cooler then we hardly noticed it. Anyway it only took about 3 minutes and that included short stops if needed and it was well worth it to reach the beautiful location of the apartments and pool bar.
We will probably return to SS again next year but wherever we end up in the future our holidays will now be self-catering, we are well and truly converted now.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Restaurant reviews
« on: September 06, 2010, 01:45:23 PM »
Zobras= we did'nt enjoy the food, mine was bland and Johns nothing to write home about but Greek dancing was excellent.
paradise= food ok, very friendly and welcoming staff.
Sunset= Nice food and again friendly staff. We also stopped here for an ice-cream sundae on our walk back from Avliotes and it was lovely.
Town pizza=excellent pizza, we sat in one night and also had a take away on another occasion.
Aquarius bar= lovely lunch/snack, I had chips and cheese, John had chips, cheese and bacon and also a toastie. Glen is a nice friendly person.
Two Stars= average. We were given free shots[I think liquers] but a couple we met in SS were quite unhappy that they were given shots of lager during both their visits, they were drinking lager but we were drinking wine/lager and we were given the liquers. They said that they felt insulted. Can't understand why anyone would be given a shot of lager.
Athina pool bar= nice toasted sandwiches which we ordered then took to the beach with us.
The bakery= Lovely pastries and delicious cheesecake.
Olympia= Well above average and friendly staff.

The best ones in our opinion:

Nafsika= Brilliant food and fantastic service.
Mythica= John really enjoyed his steak stuffed with cheese, the bread and various butters were delicious and the saganaki with pears and salad were gorgeous.
Olive press= Again excellent food, George made me some excellent vegetarian dishes. John enjoyed his half chicken x 3 times.
Ozzy oils= Lovely cobb of bread with various butters, try the dream salad it was great, John really liked the meat pie and mash.
Beachcomber= Beautiful setting for the sunsets. Lots of choice for vegetarians with the food given alot of thought. A lovely dining experience.
Tsaros pool bar= Lovely home cooked breakfasts and very good day time meals too.
Gravia= very good food with lovely views.

Also enjoyed a meal at Manthos Taverna and spent some time looking at all the old photo's of the resort in the back room, Manthos a lovely friendly guy.

Bars:
Condor bar= saw michael jackson tribute, quite entertaining in our opinion. We only popped in again for one drink on another ocassion but did'nt really enjoy being there, seemed to be lacking in atmosphere.
Bar 38= Still a lovely bar although its location has changed since our last visit.
Little Prince bar= Pleasant bar with comfortable chairs and friendly staff.
Silver star= called in for a drink, nothing special. We walked passed when Jeremy was on but there were only an handful of people watching him.
Summer dreams= Lunchtime drink, bar was always empty. Staff pleasant and friendly. John bitten by mosquito's whilst in here.
Perros hotel bar= enjoyed a nice relaxing drink after one of our walks.
Athens bar= Warm welcome once again from Nikos, nice atmosphere in pleasant surroundings.

So we enjoyed all the food on offer and we did'nt hold back at all. I don't tend to put weight on no matter how much I eat so no diet required although hubby is now sporting a few extra pounds but says it was worth it to sample all the lovely food.  :)

San Stefanos news and views / Back home now
« on: September 05, 2010, 02:46:32 PM »
Hi everyone, back home now having had a wonderful holiday.

Flights on time both ways, outbound flight much quicker than flight home. Gavalah and Pam sat behind us on outbound journey.
Coach journey to SS brilliant, only one drop off in Dassia then straight to SS where Nikos[owner of Tsaros] was waiting to take us up the hill, arrived in SS at 1520 so  glad we did not book a taxi. Coach journey back to airport a totally a different story. Picked up in SS then picked up at other SS hotels then onto Sidari where at one hotel a man appeared to have lost his wife and two young men were still in bed having been out on the tiles the night before so we were sat on the coach for about 30 minutes waiting for them to get dressed.
Tsaros apartments are lovely, we had a view of the sea and Albania. The owners Nikos and Thannasis are wonderful and warm people and we felt very welcomed by them. The pool bar was a nice relaxing place to be and the food served was very good. We met Rob[jade2001] and his lovely family on their last night, it was great to meet him. We are glad that we opted for self catering this time instead of half board because there so many nice places to eat out at.
The hill up to apartments was no problem to us, just take your time and it really is not bad at all especially at night when the weather is cooler.
Out of all the meals the only one we did not enjoy was at Zobra's, my vegetarian dish was bland and my husband meal was not so good and poorly presented but we really enjoyed the Greek dancing there.
Two stars= average.
Paradise = average but staff really friendly.
Sunset= nice food in a peaceful setting.
Olympia= well above average food with friendly staff.
The restauraunts that we think stood out above the rest are as follows:
Olive Press = very welcoming staff with lovely and well presented food. George made me a vegetarian dish that was not on the menu and it was lovely. My husband had the half chicken which he really enjoyed, we ate out there 3 times.
Mythica = Bread rolls/various butters to die for, I only fancied a salad that night after developing a craving for mars bars earlier in the day, my husband had steak stuffed with cheese which he rated highly.
Ozzy oils= Kerry very pleasnt and helpful. Food fantastic, very tasty and well presented. Hubby really enjoyed the meat pie and mash.
Nafsika= Great food with helpful and cheerful staff.
Beachcomber Bistro= A really enjoyable experience, lots of brilliant vegetarian food to choose from which was definetly not just an after thought, we visited here twice. Brilliant place to watch the sunsets too.

Lots of time spent on the beach and plenty of walking. We walked to Agios Georgios North and stopped to enjoy a meal at Dionysos restaurant overlooking A.G bay, another day we walked to Avilotes[enjoyed lunch at the Ilias  restaurant overlooking the valley] and also lots of walks through olive groves and Arillis. Hired a quad bike and visited Paleokastrica and some off road through the olive groves down from Pagi.

We made our way to Aquarius bar on Tuesday 31st but no members there so we went into Athina to say hello to staff there then checked Aquarius bar again but nobody there. I have since learnt that the day was changed but we were not aware of this either that or we got mixed up.  Never mind there is always next year.
Once again a brilliant holiday.

Out and About / Boat hire
« on: July 22, 2010, 02:27:16 PM »
Hi everyone, we are thinking of hiring a boat during our holiday. Can anyone tell me where the boats are actually moored[hope not to far away] and which are the nicest beaches/bays to stop off at if we are heading in the direction of Agios Georgios North?
Many thanks.x

San Stefanos news and views / Why I am returning to Sans Stefanos
« on: July 13, 2010, 03:17:25 PM »
Myself and my husband have never returned to the same resort in all the years we have been holidaying. We had previously said we would never do this however that was before we visited Sans Stefanos in 2008.
There are lots of reasons for our return this August some of which I will mention:
The friendly and welcoming locals, nothing is too much trouble for them, we even got a lift back to our hotel last time from 3 w's bar because it was raining.
The vast amount of taverna's, enough for a two week stay.
The entertainment at the Condor bar and the quieter bars for a relaxing night.
The helpful shop keepers who do not badger you just to make a sale.
The holidaymakers that you get talking to were always friendly, no lager louts here.
Lots of accomodation to choose from to suit everyone, we are at Tsaros up the hill this year which won't be a problem for us but there are lots of accomodation that does not require a steep climb[ask Tony].
The beach, nice and clean, lovely views of the resort and the nice lady near Athina who always has a welcoming smile for you, one day on our  previous visit to SS we paid for our sunbeds on the beach and within an hour the winds whipped up so we were unable to stay and she offered us our money back which was very nice of her.
The lovely walks to Arillis, the walks through the olive groves[very pretty] and the walk to Afionas via Arillis and stopping at the restaurant there overlooking the sea[Panorama restaurant] we had a lovely meal there and the lovliest wine ever which they make themselves.
Feeling safe walking about at night and the beautiful sunsets.
These are just a few reasons why we are returning.
