Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Restaurant recomendations

Kathys supermarket is not open and probably won't under the existing owner, as he (Alex) has returned to the US.

If you're referring to the concrete building halfway up the track from the beach to The Romanza, it's the recycling unit for the waste water from The Romanza Hotel.

If it's the small hut at the bottom of the same track (which has the word HYDRAGOGEON written on it), it's a water well/spring that supplies all the water for wc's showers sinks etc at The Romanza.

Both buildings are owned by The Romanza.

It seems that "Pilivas Ouzo" is the favourite in Corfu, used in most bars and tavernas.

Try Manthos (opposite the Nafsika) on a Wednesday or Saturday, fabulous barbecued lamb, pork and chicken, the best yet we've had in Agios Stefanos.  Manthos son Dimitri from Fedra Mare works there every evening now.

Great sunsets too.

We had a minibus transfer to the airport yesterday, the same day as Jimbo and no problems whatsoever, it took 50 minutes only.  The taxi's were lined up along the airport road but not obstructing any coaches or minibuses.

Rover and Yiannis are correct, it is not the taverna that decides the conversion exchange rate it is the credit card provider (Post Office, Nationwide, Saga etc).

If Jimbo pays 50 Euros at a taverna and pays by a “commission free overseas credit card” he will invariably get a better deal, try it next time you're there and you'll see it's correct.

On my last visit to SS in early July 2010 my Nationwide credit card gave me 1.21 to 1.22 Euros to the GBP, much better than the 1.17 Euros to the GBP exchanged in SS or the exchange rate in GB.

Local rates and on-line exchange rates are irrelevant in this instance

Hi Kath,

We stayed at the New Romanza Villas for a week in mid May 2010 and we’ve got to say they are the height of luxury and extravagance.  They are furnished to a high standard with very tasteful and sophisticated decoration. They are fully furnished and have air conditioning/central heating to all rooms.

Other than the three large bedrooms there is a two person sauna, Satellite TV and Wi-Fi, pool table.

They have fantastic views over the bay and are within easy reach of the town centre.

Was it worth the costs, most definitely.

Agreed, but you still may get a better rate by paying in Agios Stefanos with the "no overseas commission" credit card.

Incorrect Tony, The right credit card (Post Office, Nationwide etc.) can cost a lot less than paying cash as the exchange rate is always better, that is as long as the restaurant doesn't charge 2% commission.

If you have one of these "zero overseas charges" credit cards try it out, I've always found it to be much better exchange rate than in Agios Stefanos.

But some do charge 2% commission on credit cards.  Does anyone know who charges commission on credit cards and who does not?

Fantastic price, wish I'd have seen it first, snap it up.

I hear that Vangelis is still continuing his fishing this year and the only member of staff still at The Nafsika is Chris.

Information and help please / Re: Taxi's
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:51:52 PM »
There are three taxi unions in Corfu, the blue taxi union which are the town taxis, the silver north and south taxis, the silver north based in Roda being the cheapest, but they only have 21 cabs.  I'm given to understand that they publish their price lists in late April.

Rod, what prices does your friend in Corfu believe the taxi fare should be? half the prices quoted recently  (£50 each way) would be unbelievably cheap!!!
