They are Greek cigs GR Aspro - v. low tar and nicotine and a lot cheaper than English ones. You can get even cheaper ones but not easy to get low tar.

Information and help please / Re: 'Free' sun beds impending debacle?
« on: July 29, 2014, 07:27:55 PM »
Obviously the free sunbeds are for the use of the customers of the tavernas ie Mistral etc.  It would certainly be extremely rude to use the sunbeds and not buy food and drink at  the taverna. They have to get up really early to sort the sunbeds out and rake the sand and so on and there must be quite a few ruined brollies each year 'cos of the wind!!. As Jim said we ate most days at Mistral whether we used their sunbeds or not. They are great people and the food is really, really good - love their courgette fritters; spanokopita; turopita and sardines in fact everything!

I think sometimes they suffered from people not wanting to sit up the "seaweed end" - we don't mind; it's not like English seaweed and in fact the children and should I say "young adults" loved having seaweed fights! Oh the fun you can have ... :D ;D

Watered runner beans this morning - then the heavens opened and it's been raining ever since! Wish we could send it down south, while you were all flooded out earlier in the year we had one of the driest winter and springs I can remember! Oh well, no gardening for me this afternoon. Here is Hull by the way!

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Ilias in Avliotes
« on: August 13, 2013, 06:44:06 PM »
It's a lovely walk through the olive groves as it's so shady and peaceful.  In fact the whole walk is beautiful. The dogs are a bit scary if, like me you are a bit wary of dogs!! Luckily I was with Jimbo and he is used to dogs and I must say they were fine and we just walked through and past them, no trouble at all and we have done the walk several times now and I am getting used to them!  Try not to let them put you off going as it is a great walk.

You certainly need a cold Mythos at Ilias and some lunch. From Avliotes you can walk on to Peroulades (I think that's what it's called) where there is a great view and a taverna overlooking the sea - it even has some swinging seats.

« on: August 01, 2013, 06:09:36 PM »
I usually get around 7 or 8 over a fortnight, but funnily enough this year was the best I've ever had! :D Only three and I think a couple weren't mozzies but some other type of biter as they didn't really come up much. Used the new stuff people have mentioned from Amazon and did put it on every night but never in the daytime. We were staying at Anatoli and eating a lot at Nafsika and had no bites there. Seems to be just a lot of luck, or bad luck should I say - take no notice of Jim as it's true he never seems to get bitten and hardly ever puts any anti-mozzzie stuff on as he hates the smell!!! They just don't like him!   He does wear long trousers and socks most evenings and I'm sure that helps. However I have to say we didn't see many while we were there. So if they like you keep spraying - good luck!

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Smoking while dining Alfresco ?
« on: March 20, 2013, 07:51:29 PM »
I agree cigarette smoke is not a pleasant smell but I find it difficult to believe that meals and holidays can be ruined by the odd smoker in the outside area of a taverna.  ???
Usually these are open on three sides even if they have a roof. There is usually a sea breeze and I can't think that clothes and hair will smell with all the swims, showers and time spent in the open air. If it really is so bad to you then why not mention it, politely, to the the smoking table and I'm sure they would happily move. I have observed non-smokers being very rude and "telling" others to stop it and how disgusting they are. We are not in England and it is allowed and it is so wonderful for a smoker not to have to always lurk about feeling like a pariah. Let's face it, we all love to watch the Greek dancing. The amount of barbecue fuel that is used every evening is huge and the smell not very nice at all and certainly not good for us but we love the spectacle and know we would never be allowed to set light to tables and floors in England in this way!!  ;D  Let's just be tolerant.

I have just given up smoking - not had one since October! Bet you don't believe me those of you who know me, but it's true.

Information and help please / Re: Thomson's Baggage Allowance
« on: September 21, 2012, 01:28:21 PM »
Hi Lizzie, We're going for 25 nights from 24 Sept to Oct 19 and will need some warmer clothes! The weather can be lovely but can also get very chilly and very wet, so extra trousers and shorts  + cagoule and brollie needed. Drying stuff can be quite tricky in these conditions as we have discovered, especially in the salty air. I agree, it's easy to pack too much but in the warmer months it's much easier to pack the minimum, knowing a T shirt can be rinsed out and will dry in minutes in the sun. Will need less heavy sun-cream so that's good! Last year the weather was fantastic, but at the moment it seems a lot cooler. Let's hope if we take warm clothes the sun will come out and we shan't need them. :) We also want to take some bits and pieces for people we know in the village that the find hard to get.
Off on Monday!

Where to stay / Re: Nafsika

Not oodles of space. We found the number of hangers OK, but there's not an awful lot of drawer space. Two drawers below the wardrobe. However, we also used the floor of the wardrobe for T-shirts etc. We kept shoes in the bottom of the bedside table which worked fine. There is a good drawer in the "dressing table" piece of furniture and also a large cupboard, so once you've looked round and decided where to put stuff it's fine! I probably take to many T-shirts anyway!! Have a great time. We'll be back there on Sept 24th - can't wait.  :D
