Title: A newbe
Post by: pauljaffa on January 21, 2010, 10:57:59 PM
 :)
me and my partner with our 5 yr old are going on the 14 June to the Kapetanios.  My inlaws recommeded stan stef as they have been several times and will be there at the same time. A few questions if I may:

-  Good restaurants and is there a takeaway that does giros with the three chips stick out (class I know but a great snack).
-  A play park -rides etc?
- this our fourth time to Corfu  (Kavos then Acharavi and - maybe Kavos twice lol We were young)
- Prices - I guess same as Edinburgh to eat out?
- Any good for snorkelling?

Cheers

Paul

BYW - deleted last post as i worded it wrong about the inlaws! Meant not eating at the same hotel every night!

2 places for good Giros... Tasty Corner by the T-junction and Yiannis on the main street Not a lot to choose between them.
Restaurants......... Only ever had one bad meal during 40 weeks spent in San Stef. All pretty much the same standard Greek fare but for that something different I would suggest Ozzy Oils and the beachcomber.
For snorkelling "Bubblehead & Kipper" run a dive centre in the old part of the village. If my other half recovers from a bad shoulder injury he will be out with thm this year.  Ray and Bev are also lovely people.
Childrens play areas, we know nothing about. Mistral had one but it is now closed down.
Prices.... most charge about €6.50 for a main course.... Cheap compared to Canaries that we've just come back from. Have to say Edinburgh is pricier than where we live but San Stef is cheaper than here!
Drink is about the same as here.

Hope that helps.

And I would like to welcome you to the Forum and confirm the above.
Also include the Mythica Restaurant, (just around the corner from the Barras),
we think it's on a par with the Beachcomber and a "must visit" Place.
As Sandra says, the Restaurants in the resort are all very good quality, you can't go wrong!!

PS
Sandra - Typo alert (this is one of our little forum games - and we all do it!!).
There is an "E" in them!! - - Gotch'a!! LOL
If my other half recovers from a bad shoulder injury he will be out with thm this year.

Hi Pauljaffa
Welcome to the forum.I would like to endorse what the other posts have said regarding restaurants in the village. In my opinion all of them are of good standard and excellent value for money.I am also of the opinion that the Beachcomer,Ozzie oils and Mythica are the pick of them.I have never stayed at the Kapetonios but have used its facilities on numerous occassions and have always been made very welcome.I use it on very windy days due to its sheltered location. My hotel is on the cliff top and exposed to the elements making sunbathing a draughty business during strong winds.
I am certain you will love San Stefanos as we all do.This year i will be staying at the top of the hill from you at the Romanza. It will be my 10th visit and my 13th year running to San Stef.Having said that i am still a novice compared with a lot of regulars. The Romanza has a small childrens play area but i am not aware of any others.Perhaps other members are .We are in San Stef. from the 18th June for 2weeks so we could well come across you as we pass the Kapetonios as we make our daily trips to the village.

I forgot to mention, in the evenings, try the Gladiator Bar, almost at the end of the road down the hill.
We had some good evenings there last year, with our young Grandson.
They have a dedicated play area, climbing frame and "pit" full of plastic balls, brilliant for the kids while the Adults go online,
play pool/snooker, or simply relax and listen to the background music, with a nice drink.
Invariably, this attracts other children of similar age groups, so they also make great new friends.
This is a lifesaver for bored children!!
Enjoy!

That's true Zoe - Forgot that one,
- - we've seen you there thrashing around on the floor many times!! LOL

Also - and only if it re-opens this year - Mistral has children's swings and play area. (& it's right on the beach).
Great place for lunch - well it was!! I wonder if George will run it again this year?

You can get good fish meals in most restaurants, especially the previously mentioned ones,
Sunset Taverna also does great grilled sardines.
The original fish specialist restaurant is the Waves Taverna on the beach.
We had a fantastic fish meal there last year.
Nothing like fresh grilled fish Greek style!!

Hi Pauljaffa and welcome to the friendliest of forums. There are boat trips to the local islands that can be seen from San Stefanos. You can aslo take a boat trio to Paleokastritsa and if you go to Corfu Town there is also a glassbottomed boat trip as well. Not sure of any others but if you go to the San Stefanos Travel website below you will find lots of info as well

Again, Jules is right - I have done the Paleokastritsa trip a few times now - a good trip along the coast.
A nice short trip, land in the harbour and a 10 min walk into the main beach and town, some stalls along the route to look at.
There is a Monastery above the beach (time depending), and lots of small row boats doing the blue caves and grotto trips.

I also recommend the trip to MATHRAKI AND ERICUSA ISLANDS.
ERICUSA is also a trip on it's own.
It's one of 3 local inhabited Islands, this is the longest distance of the three, but lovely, - I would prefer the trip that does both.
but either is not too stressful even for a bad sailor.
As Jules said  - it's on Noula's (San Stefanos Travel), website.
Incidently, all tours by Thompson's except one, are covered by Noula and much cheaper, yet still fully insured etc.

Again thanks.

I usually book through local agents  -  cheaper and only one bad experience.  Actually went to Corfu and ths missus had to drive the boat home (with others - went to anti paxos) - 50 people on it!  Captain enjoyed his luch too much!

Hi Pauljaffa,

My wife and I stayed in San Stef for the first time last year and we have booked again for this year.  On our last day we managed to stay in a room at the Kapetanios (spelling) as we had to vacate our own apartments by 12 noon.  We therefore had most of the day and early evening at the Kapetanios.  I will be honest and say although the place was not our cup of tea, I do think with a child or children then you have made a good choice.

The restaurants are of a very good quality and not too expensive.  The regulars here will be more than willing to assist in any queries.  This forum actually was a great help when we first booked.  We may bump into you, who knows.

Rod.

Kapetanios Apts are very nice, the only complaint is that it's up a hill.
If you are reasonably fit, you won't really notice the walk up by the end of your first week,
just take it slowly, even very mature people like Jules can manage it - - - LOL

Jules, just showing my appreciation for your physical attributes.
Not many women of such a gently, "mature" age could give a fireman's lift to the odd handy 'Roy' nearby,
and run full pelt up the hill with him, without even breathing heavily!
Wow! - no wonder we all look up to you - - - LOL!!! Wonder Woman  - eat your heart out!

PS - I am always available for the occasional fireman's lift, (a piggyback would be nicer), whenever you are in training!!
Yours in admiration!!

(PS - ROY - did I get away with that one?)
