Pronounced gee-ross. Pitta if you don't mind messy fingers, otherwise plate. I've only eaten them from the Tasty Corner,& I am happy with the choice there.

I prefer them in a pitta, but if you don't mind them on a plate, Terezas do a great gyros, but don't have a starter, they are huge.

tasty corner is my choice

Sorry Helen, almost correct gyro does indeed mean round, but in terms of turn round as in rotate (like on a spit). Think gyrate.

Quite regular at Tasty Corner and I find them moreish! Sandra prefers pork souvlaki though. Both of us enjoyed a lunchtime Gyros Pitta at the Olympia, very nice indeed though only one size available. Had Gyros plate at the Little Prince and enjoyed that too.

Basically.... A pitta wrap... Containing meat, salad, fries and taramasalata (spelling!). Cheap, filling and tasty. Probably the only fast food we eat.

Yes - Gyros are best at tasty - but they worry me - it's almost the same as the turkish "Doner Kepab",
pressed meat cooked on a rotating spit grill, the troube is "What was the Doner"?? How many days has it been rotating??
It always looks like a road-kill grill to me.  LOL!! ::)
But must admit - I do eat them on occasions from the Tasty grill!!

Yannis in the "High Street" do superb ones. Also try the pork souvlaki.

I once remember a cookery programme where a top chef, the french one who's name I've forgotten, sampled various kebabs/gyros from different fast food outlets in London.  He gave a massive thumbs to the gyros and said they were made from decent cuts of meat.  He obviously did not rate the processed version (elephants foot).

Sandra W agree with you we have tried Yiannis ones in high street opposite Athena Bar, I also go for the pitta with souzlaki cubes (believe choice is pork, beef and chicken available) inside instead of the Gyros, its still served in the pitta and you ask for what you want inside for dressing: toms, onions, paprika and tsatsiki, very tasty washed down with a little retsina of course.

2 weeks ago we bought the proper "pitta" that they use in Greece it was in a pack of 10 frozen and was made in Greece, it  is open to the public and supplies restaurants. my husband dry fried it and served it with pork with Greek seasoning, salad a few chips and tzatziki it was lovely  ;D  yum yum
It also sold Mythos in bottles , 5* and 7* Metaxa and loads of other stuff
i cant remember the name as my daughter found the place on line and drove us there,  it was in Liverpool city center between the Albert dock and Anglican cathedral in some industrial units off i think jamaica street
we will be visiting again soon, the 2 Greek guys were lovely and very helpful

Don't care what they are made of, I ike them. I have had them from the tasty corner and have always enjoyed them. Yiannis opposite the Athens bar are aso good. If they are made out of the bits of what is eft over just ask them to leave the eyes in to see you through the week.

Hi Helen

Just read your post with interest, the place could be in Greenland Street which is near Jamaica Street over the way to the Albert Dock. Was it called Acropolis? I was in city centre yesterday wish I  had known I could have gone and had a look, this could be a very useful place.Did you have to buy a considerable amount or just what you wanted?
We had been  looking for Anessia greek spirit which Yiannis used to give you at the end of your meal when he was at the Grillroom,we couldn't find it anywhere until it eventually popped up in the Lidl when they had a greek food week.I dare say this place would have stocked it.
Thanks for the info, let me know if this is the right place.
I found this address on Sugarvinedesigns site. ;D
