Title: mozzies
Post by: Patandgra on February 21, 2009, 06:18:39 PM
We are staying at the olga apts in sept, this will be our first stay in San Stefanos. We have stayed in the peraloudes area a couple of times which is not that far from San Stef and are hoping for a similar mozzie free experience. We made the mistake of stopping in Benitses one year and were unprepared for the relentless mozzie assault we endured for two weeks, will somebody tell me what level of mozzie activity they have experienced in San Steph. ???

Beleive me you will not have a mozzie free experience. We are always in SS at beginning of September and always have to take the usual precautions with repelent and plug ins. It never spoils our holiday though. It is just part of our holiday we can deal with effortlessly. :)

I can agree, you shouldn't get too bad a Mozzie experience up at the Olga, but they are usually about.
We take all the usual precautions, and have spent many Septembers in San Stefanos.
We also take anti-histamines for a couple of weeks before we go away, (non-drowsey type) & during our stay there,
we read an article some years ago, it seems that Mozzies, don't like the odour on the skin from it, but if you get a bite it helps.
I get hay-fever so have always taken anti-histamines, which may explain the lack of bites, coupled with anti-mozzie spray,
and room plug-in's.
My wife's mozzie bite experiences have dropped dramatically, since doing the same, although she always cop's a few bites each year.
I think some people are just more attractive to the little beasts. Other articles suggest eating garlic helps as well.
Whatever - in spite of the Mozzies - I have only ever had one bite there since we first went there 26 years ago.
My wife used to get bitten a few times each year, but we have "savvied-up" a bit since the early days and it's really not too bad.
I hope this helps.

1)-We use the room plug ins.
2)-A burning candle on the balcony.
3)-Shower with natural lemon shower gel. Allegedly the varmints hate lemon!
4)-Always have Garlic bread or Garlic mushroom starter.
5)-Use after sun with Insect repellant.
6)-Use anti-histamines.
7)-Mosquito repellant wrist bands. Lemon scented

The problem is I still get bit. After putting on all the various gunges and quack potions I get bit on the hands. I really must stop washing them!

PS ..... any further suggestions?

8)=Vitamin B

Marmite keeps them away as well. And before anyone asks (who do I mean) you do not put it on your skin. Just eat as normal. My hubby swears by it but then he does eat it on a regular basis anyway. ;)
The Citronella candles are a good idea to have on your balcony after dusk if you are sitting out. :)

Just a word of warning......if using a spray repellent.

my 2 friends last year decided to spray repellent just before leaving apartment, then proceeded to re-inact the ice skating scene from BAMBI !!!!!!!!   ;D

althugh hilarious to watch, it could have caused injuries !!!!

so do not spray repellent inside as it makes the tiled floor VERY slippery !!!!!!!

i am sticking to my gel !!!!!!

Thanks for the advice, lemon yes,Garlic yes, even anti histamines but Marmite!! some people will tell you anything to get you to eat the stuff, spreading it on your skin would make more sense as it seems to be repellent to most living things.

The only time we used a spray repellent the bottle leaked everywhere so now only use Jungle Formula roll on and Jungle Formula plug in.

Apparently if you take Vitamin B tablets for a few weeks and while on holiday that works.  Marmite is full of Vit B so must have the same effect.  Better if you don't Marmite.

Try to wear long legged pants and not shorts. Also don't wear perfume or after shave as they may be attracted to it.

Don't do perfume. Not my scene baby! As for aftershave... Sandra claims I never shave! As for long trousers... why deprive the world of my legs? You have kept on about them long enough! Must be something about them. Good or bad let the world share  :o

All very interesting, but looking at your dodgy 'Tan' Don, I would say that you definately use Marmite as an instant tan,
the trouble with Marmite is - you either Love or Hate it - so only the Marmite loving Mozzies tend to bit you!!!
Now - does it rub off on the sheets??

It comes down to this - do all of the above - and if you still get bitten - wear a rubber suit from head to foot!! LOL

Come on Don!!
It's 2009 - you can use cream - Beckham does, it'll go with the Marmite Sun Screen you use, but smell better.
As a man of substance who is comfortable with his sexuality, I will try the cream and let you know what you are missing.
Yes I know - you had a hard life and ate coal as a child, (Hovis etc), but at least try it - we won't tell!!!

AH the good old days. Sneaking a round of bacon dip as your dad gets his breakfast. Saving the fat from roasted meat to use on toast or meat butties. Lard by the bucketful. Suet by the shovel and were we unhealthy, were we unfit. Gee no fellow we were good and strong!

don, We used to be able to buy it in any of the supermarkets in ss. Then a couple of years ago it disappeared from the shelves.... maybe the eec regs finally hit greece or something. We thought that it had gone for good but then last year it re appeared. We got it at Margaritas and i also saw it in another supermarket in St George when we were over there.  Maybe they have changed formula or something, but it still works for me.

Someone has also told me that the boots own stuff in the grey bottles is excellent. A friend who is usually eaten alive wherever he goes used it a couple of weeks ago somewhere where there were loads of mozzies and did not get bitten at all. I suspect that this may be the tropical stuff.

will try anything to keep little blighters at bay!

Think you might be right Jules although friends in US say its still in products there and they tend to be paranoid about what they use. I did not check the ingredients. I reckon if i am only using something for a short time its not going to be a problem..... now you are all going to think of something that using even for  very short time would not be a good idea.... bring it on you lot !!!! : ;D ;D ;D

(Radio active sun cream.... ?????)

I always take antihistamines as well just in case one of the little blighters gets me. It helps with the itching.
Radio active sun cream sounds great - we would all glow very nicely on the beach :o

I have noticed the word DEET before - I think they used it in Vietnam and it used to be called Agent Orange!!

Again we agree  - - Boots stuff is very good!!
But - if you miss the smell of catz Pee - borrow Don's after-shave - thats exactly what Brut smells like when it's 20 years out of date!!
And he takes it on every holiday - I am reliably told!! - saves a few pence and no mozzie would go near it - there you are!!
A deet-free solution - Old bottles of Brut!!! LOL

Good gosh - my father wore that!!
No Linda works for World Duty free, so gets a decent staff discount.
My brothers wife works as one of the Top Managers for Este' Lauder.
That means I have a huge aftershave collection - I am up with the latest stuff on the market!!
The one I have been using a lot this year is the new Paco Rabanne "Black" for him - also "Million" for him.
Paco Rabanne "Black" for her is nice too!
One of my favourites is Este' Lauder "Happy" for men - good general use and fresh smelling!!
There - - no old spice  - - no Hi Karate - - - no Brut!!  Don  8) has the Market there!!, plus the latest - old socks!! LOL

Sorry to disappoint but don't do aftershave. Very old fashioned, men and perfume don't go together unless drunk for the alcoholic content!  :o

Oh come on Don!! I can smell something all right!! I think it's Bull-S**t!!
Firstly Aftershave is not perfume!
Secondly, nothing wrong with smelling nice - even real hardnuts wear aftershave - even from up north!!
Sweat and B O are not too cool - - Women do not appreciate nastily smelling men, ask the girls!! -
I suppose you just rub mythos under your arms!! LOL

Thanks Sue.... You know I drink white wine with meals, then red after! Always use deoderant - Even a special one for feet. Aftershave - No!!!!! Most brands bring on a sneezing fit... Same when close to a lot of perfumes..... Allergic!

I just love it when Roys just had a shave and then puts on some Next aftershave. He usually smells gorgeous and my dear Mum also approved of what ever he wore as well. :)
