Title: How long have you been a member?
Post by: Tredegar Boy on June 10, 2020, 02:36:38 AM
Hi everyone. I'm bored so I just spent some time looking at past comments I posted on the various topics over the years and I wondered how many members are still around from when I joined. It was 28th June 2008.

I still see many posts from people who were around back then but some of the regular contributors 12 years ago seem to have been less prolific in their postings in recent times. Hopefully their still around but use twitface (or whatever its called) instead.

Hope you're all well and staying safe.

Just a newbie on here, 2013. Yep, FB has been the ruination of many forums, so sad.  :'(

July 2016 for me, seemed quite a random date until I remembered it was around the time my best mate Mark died of Pancreatic Cancer. We had a final holiday together in the village in September 2015 and I've visited at that time every year since as it brings back good memories.

That’s an awful way to remember David, very sorry to hear that.
A very “newbie” or am I? I certainly am a newbie as a member, but I do vaguely remember accessing something like this whilst we were visiting. Our last visit before 2019 was 2006 and looking at the members list in “date joined” order I’m guessing 2006 was when the forum started? Or has it, like other forums I’ve been on, had other incarnations?
The numerous forums I’m on (I have a few interests) are in the same boat as this forum i.e. losing its membership due to social media (it’s not just FB). I think the reasons are quite complex, but mainly due to the friction between different people, there are many other reasons such as the fad of social media and the need to be seen…, boredom etc. .  It’s a great shame as I don’t think there is any comparison with the two in terms of communication, information or community. Of course I’m very biased as I really dislike all aspects of social media and the way it is run. Don’t get me wrong, in principle it’s a great concept, but in practice it’s a great fat rip-off. Unfortunately I suspect things will only get worse for forums like this as social media gets its wish and takes over the world of communication – very sad….

April this year, so very much a newbie.  I have how ever been a regular user as a guest.  I agree with Karen’s view of the Facebook site, members must be struggling this year not being able to post photos of what they had to eat.  Boring!  And some of the admin team i’m Sure we’re past members of the SS, so many rules.
This forum is in my opinion brilliant at giving real information from the likes of Lesley and Jimbo and many others. You may not always like my response but no offence ment.

My first visit was in the 90s. Good luck.

I had to check my profile but I have been a member since October 2009.  I don't wish to bore you all but I joined the forum as I was so excited to be be going back to San Stef after more than 25 years.  I remember sitting in the Little Prince chatting to Dimitri in 2010 and telling him that I was in the village back in the early to mid 80's (I'm hopeless with dates but it was probably 1984 or 1985).  He was gobsmacked and grilled me as to what was open etc.  He was convinced when I told him the correct places.

I love the place and luckily the girlfriend to be wife also fell in love with it in 2010.

I joined in 2010. My then boyfriend brought me for the first time in 2008 and we stopped at the top of Heart Attack Hill at the Romanza. Beautiful hotel but the weather was rainy all week so we never got to the beach, apart from one walk down there via the cliff path-by the time we got back to the Romanza we were around 3 inches taller as we had so much sludge stuck to our shoes! Luckily I forgave him cos the next time we came he was my fiancé and the time after my husband-also luckily we discovered the Vicky otherwise I think I would have refused to go any more!  ;D

Joined the forum in 2010 ..around about the time we became repeat visitors. I recall I used to be critical of holiday makers who returned to the same place..how wrong can you be! Holidays can be therapeutic in two ways I think...discovering the new...fresh finds , new experiences, all quite exciting. Then of course there’s the safe  reset button of San Stef , familiar faces, guaranteed relaxation , security and peace of mind.

February 2010

We'd just booked the Romanza for our first ever visit.
First people i spoke to on here were Tony Cox and Carl Baron and im still good mates with both of them. In fact hopefully will be there celebrating Carl's big 6 0 with him in August

Also Yannis from Whitby helped me out, he left the forum after a row over sunbeds! Who remembers that!?

First forum member a met was a girl called Lilly.... Been talking on her for a while on here as we were going on the same day. Turns out she ended up sitting behind me on the plane!
Sellsy was also there at the Romanza that time round

Tony Cox had forum wristbands made so we could be indentified lol

I'm sure you are quite correct Gill, but they are silly in doing so. Really when you think about it. It’s madness to come on a forum and just because it’s based on AS to think the people will be all nice and as we believe we all are when in AS. They were never going to be, and many I know I would avoid in AS, and I’m sure many would want to avoid me...! :)

1st trip to San Stefanos was in 1989 but returned again as a single parent with my then 16 year old daughter in 2006. Once she had enough of her old man cramping her style I want solo several times but now visit with my partner of 10 years, she's loves it and is hooked too, which is just as well or I would have continued coming over myself anyway!  ;D

Don't really post much on here but check on the forum frequently and enjoy reading the posts.

To explain to those who weren't here at the time, the reason the man who called himself Yiannis (he was late-middle aged Englishman) left was that in almost every post he made he promoted Romanza and Mythica (the taverna owned by Romanza and no longer there). Many people became fed up with this and said so. Eventually he stormed off.

The "heated" debates were often about trivial things - for example, were some people being given Kumquat marmalade at breakfast at Romanza? That one ran and ran, and became a running joke. Actually, some people took their own Kumquat jam to breakfast!

I think people these days are over-sensitive to disagreement. I like issues to be debated. For example, in 1944 Churchill ordered British troops, allied with pro-Nazi collaborators, to fire upon a peaceful demonstration in Syntagma Square in Athens. 20 were killed and over a hundred injured. It's known to Greek people as Dekemvriana. That's just one example of Churchill's dreadful actions. Heated debate, anyone?

Ha ha..... I remember kumquatgate very well.

I chuckled because was staying at Romanza one year and old Kosta, who couldn't speak a word of English, babbled on at me then forced a kumquat into my hand

Went straight back to that argument!

The there was Vlad The Black Dog, who could be seen prowling the village mysteriously at night.

And Natasha, the Ukrainian poet:

I enjoyed the flurry of postings where people assured Natasha that San Stef was an incredibly broad-minded place.

And plenty more. The forum was a lot of fun then!

I have been a member since June 2007.

We first came to Corfu 33 years ago and have probably had about 24 holidays on the island staying in Sidari (Canal d'amour) several times, Acharavi once, Arillas several times and San Stefanos the last 10 years or so apart from a blip last year when we done All Inclusive in Agios Gordios which was a mistake, after the first week we checked out and hired a car to SS and stayed there for the rest of the holiday.

Wherever we stayed on the island in the early days we always hired a bike/car to spend a day on SS beach.

I don't contribute on the forum very much but keep up to date with the posts most days especially at the moment as we should be there now  :(.

Morning all.

August 2009 for me, which was soon after finding San Stefanos and was our first foreign holiday in 10 years to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We stayed at Voula, fell in love with the resort and island and have returned pretty much every year since. We've stayed at Rose Garden and Theresa, but predominantly return to Perros, which has been our particular favourite over the years.

During one of our holidays, back in 2012, I created a website and wrote a blog during our 2 week holiday. If you need a distraction at the moment, you may find some of the ramblings of interest and hopefully bring back some memories:

https://www.lovecorfu.com/blog

I had planned to commercialise the website at some point, but it ended up with very little content. I have refreshed it recently, but as mentioned it remains as a possible project for the future.

Enjoy and take care all.

He may well be to you Rod, but probably not to everyone’s taste! I think many have said before, it makes a big difference if you have met these people. But then again I’m sure we must all have experienced having a great holiday, minding your own business and then one night some couple or people sit beside you, even though every other table is empty. An hour or so later, driven out, it’s “what a PIA that guy/woman was”! Of course the very opposite happens and often you meet some lovely long lasting friends. So Jimbo doesn’t like tattoos, you don’t like hippies/Buddhists and I don’t like anything…. The forum is just the same, to me what is an AH turns up and to others they a hero such is life as the Buddhists would probably say.
I do however have respect for those who post, and even more so in some depth and with knowledgeable posts. It takes time to do so and without it forums will die and all you will have is FB. :)
