Title: 2020 holidays
Post by: Karen on July 10, 2019, 03:32:27 PM
Just a heads up for early July next year. Apparently there is a big Scottish wedding in resort. Friends here are trying to book for next year and haven't found anywhere. Think we will be changing our dates! :(

After missing out this year mainly due to family health issues, as always were booked with Vagelis (Vagelis Apartments) behind the Nafsika from 31st August for 11 days.

Couldn't get our usual villa but we've got the family house that they use over the winter, great views and looks right over the Nafsika pool.

Still to get flights but needless to say I'm counting the days already  8)

I’m not too sure we will ever go back, but if we do it will be like this year a very last minute thing and out of season. Probably between April and June or September to October or both. This being the case we don’t need to book anything as we have no specific time or place (in AS of course). I had a look at flights yesterday as the family are there in July next year and wanted to know when the flights were out. All 3 I looked at are now out; Jet2 (been out for ages), Easyjet and Ryanair, with the latter being the earliest start to the year in late March. Not much in it, but it looks like a combo of two of the above will give the best times for us and price (circa £250 for 2). But I need to look at when the school hols are (to avoid) and Easter. Also have the choice of flying from/to LeedsB, so will look at that as well.

"Different" in what way that made the summer weird?

Not the usual AS crowd, imo - loud, brash, chavvy...

Must have been us two there in July… After not being there for several years I have to say we did notice a few parties that were not your normal AS folk, one lot Russian (arrogant very rude behaviour towards the restaurant staff) and the other unfortunately from the UK, large crowd drinking copious bottles of Amstel on the beach with a music blaster playing awful music very loudly. We took it as a one-off and hopefully it was.

Totally agree in a way Sunshine Gal..... Was there August and deffo some different people to the normal crowd.

There were lots of cheap hols knocking about this summer and think it attracted people to the resort that wouldn't normally come

Yes I think that was it,so many really bargain basement deals.

We were there the last week in July and first two weeks in August and, frankly, there didn't seem to be much difference. Mixalis did have to chuck a few out of the Little Prince bar, but not while we were there. They local owners and bar-keepers have always moaned about the kind of people who go in August, but with loving the takings. This year, because of the devaluation of sterling caused by Brexit, loads of people were taking self-catering literally and eating pizzas and baked beans in their rooms, and then going to a bar to imbibe.

I think that there is always a delicate balance between being popular and being classy. There have always been cheap deals. We've had some spectacularly good-value trips, because being geriatric means you're not restricted. What seemed different this year was how quiet it was in the evening - not how loud.
Title: Re: 2020 holidays
Post by: maggiesaes on October 22, 2019, 04:26:02 PM
When we were there last May(2018) Demetri advised us not to book too early for 2019 as there would be a lot of cheap deals.
We did however get a decent deal booking early as coming from Cardiff only TUI fly to Corfu.

TUI's prices change dynamically on the website under various obscure algorithms. Worth checking every day if one is serious about booking.

We booked for Little Prince next year, in July this year. Checked a couple of days ago and it had gone up by about £200!

I check often even if we have already booked.
I like to see the way  things are going and always on the look out for a quick extra at the right price.

I think you just have to accept it Karen.
We ‘Book early to avoid disappointment’ as they say and we are pleased to get what we want.
Title: Re: 2020 holidays
Post by: Karen on October 29, 2019, 04:36:39 PM
Yes Maggie,we always book early to get what we want.  We are really looking forward to having a change next year and going to Little Prince!  John will be able to go next door for his paper and we will be nearer Nafsica, where we tend to eat.  We will still walk down to ASPA Supermarket for our groceries, as we have known the family for many years. :)

We use Aspa as well as a couple of others,we too have known them for over 20 years and Little Prince is in a good spot,
We changed to staying there two years ago and have stayed four times.

Never eaten in Nafsica though in all those years.

Little Prince is certainly more central than Silver Moon. The only thing is, we finish our evening at Athens bar and then just wander over the road, so slightly further to walk! We love Nafsica, food is very good at its a very rustic taverna :)

Title: Re: 2020 holidays
Post by: Jimbo on October 30, 2019, 04:16:48 PM
A few picky points: Aspa is uphill from Little Prince; from Athens Bar to Little Prince is an easy stagger downhill; Nafsika is one of the best places to eat in Agios Stefanos, but I doubt if Spiros would be pleased with "rustic" because he aspires, at its best, to fine dining. From time to time Spiros makes us a "special" lunch of quite exceptional adventure and beauty. He takes basic Greek food and tries to elevate it. But he will also produce a truly genuine Greek experience - such as rabbit stifado of about 10 on the taste scale. The thing is, Spiros is always happy at a day or two's notice to make something special in the "specials" menu and tell you when you shall have it.

Maggie - it's far more than a hotel. I know you have mobility problems, but if you can make it to Nafsika, do give it a try. Best time is after 8:45 pm, because residents eat between 7 and 9.

Jimbo it’s more Andy than me.I have so much metal in me that as long as I am ‘oiled’ I get about. ;D
I have pointed out we can hire a buggy from Spiros And Aris,we only have to email and he’d save it for us.
We do get up for Yannis fab kebabs but in the evenings he likes to be nearer ‘home’ in the evenings after a tincture or two ::)

Rabbit is a great favourite of mine and George who used to have the Mistral used to make a really good one.We used to eat there very often in those days,

I'm sure we will work it out Jim, at least we won't be nearly falling in the pool, on our way back to our apartment, after a couple of sherrys.  Nafsica is definitely rustic! :)  Maggie I would think you would love it, but you have to go downhill and then up again on the way home!

Anatoli for us this year, 30th July for two weeks. Not stayed there before and rebooked flights with BA after the Thomas Cook collapse. We also noticed a small number of different type of clientele in resort this August, and not for the better. There was a guest at Teresa’s who was extremely rude and disrespectful to staff, was actually quite aggressive.

I hate to say this, but I think people all over the world have become more intolerant and aggressive in recent years and it is getting worse! Shades of the 1930’s (only from what I’ve read of course :) ) Sad!

We were there last July and there were a group of Americans there, think they are related to someone in the village. One thug attacked his sister in Zorbas and again in Athens, whilst we were in there. Bar staff chucked him out. Didn't see them this year. Disgraceful behaviour.

They joys of AS are the easy going laid back relaxed atmosphere and having a chuckle when things go a little awry or take too long.
I hope it is not a thing of the past.

I am lurking in the cardio ward at present, kept in after an out patient appointment Friday.
