Title: Restaurants/taverna's that we visited during our holiday.
Post by: lilly on July 03, 2013, 10:00:05 PM
Hi all, we had some really good meals this year in SS.
Olympia was our favourite and dined here at least four times, staff very attentive and friendly.
Two stars was also excellent and we were given a free half carafe of wine, free cake and a free cream dessert with every meal.
Beachcombers was also very good and was no more expensive than any other restaurant.
Yiannis also very good along with tasty corner, waves on the beach,Nafsika hotel and the little prince.

Barras was just average tbh.

I have got to give a mention also for Town pizza, I am not really a fan of pizza's but I really enjoyed the ones here, we had some great conversations with the owner Stamatis who is at present struggling for trade so if anyone likes pizza or pasta then please pay him a visit.

Also enjoyed two lunches in Avilotes at the Ilias taverna and we had many, many lunches at the Aquarius bar.
We drove to old Perthia (abandoned village) and had a great lunch at Foros Taverna, wow this place was fantastic and as if time had stood still, amazing place and the food was the best we have tasted, we received a warm welcome from the owner along with free walnut cake drizzled in honey.

We also walked to Afionas and there is a new tavern there ( I think it was called sunset tavern) with amazing views and excellent food, when you get to the village square, walk through the narrow streets and it is signposted.

Wish that we were still there now enjoying the amazing food, company and of course the warm sun.

You are welcome Jules, yes Olympia for us outshined them all this year, the briam was really lovely and a great choice of starters on offer too. It has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere and  if you are  wanting a chilled out meal with excellent service then this is the place to go.

We ate at Olympia the other night

Great food but they weren't particularly friendly!! Not unfriendly but definitely seemed to have an aversion to kids!!
There was a really pretty girl waiting on and she was a bit stand off ish.

But great food, great setting

We didn't bother with the Olympia this year due to being turned away last year, I'm stubborn like that. :)

Surprised you found the Barras not so good. We had a couple of great meals there this year, the Kleftico was particularly good and it was one of the less expensive meals we had.

Must agree and disagree with you Gavlah1973  Olympia is our favourite , but the view , in our opinion, is not the best .
If it was at The Waves location  it would be perfect.

I meant more the lovely flowers etc than the actual sea/sunset view!!

They didn't let us in a few years ago and there was only me and my husband, so stubborn like you we never went back.

Hi Jaxbubbles and D&G, why did they not let you in? Was it full at the time? I can't imagine anyone turning customers away and can't think of a reason why they would do so tbh.

No it wasn't full. The chap just waved us away! Maybe he was having a bad night or his kitchen appliances had broken down!! Or maybe he was expecting a big party of 50 people goodness knows. but he didn't give any explanation. In fact he didn't say a word!! just waved us away without a smile or anything.

Oh I see, it would have helped if they had given you an explanation, I don't think that I would have been very pleased with just being waved away either. Seems very odd.

Lilly it didn't matter, as we all know there are plenty wonderful restaurants to choose from.  :)

Never had any problems at Olympia and have never seen anyone being turned away either. Friends of ours went in a few times with there young grandchildren last year and if they had had a bad experience I think they would have said and not gone back again .

Apologies for turning this review thread into an Olympia bashing again.  I can only share my experience though and the fact was that my group last year (approx 8 adults and 5 children) were turned away from an empty restaurant without reason.

It really didn't bother me because as we all know there is no shortage of excellent eateries in the village. It was just a shame because our larger group of 32 obviously avoided the Olympia from then on, as did we on our visit again this year.

The place does get favourable food reviews on here so they are doing something right!

To be honest we found it very clicky at Olive Press and only went once because of that.

We found the Romanza to be very 'cliquey' last year and won't stay there again. Didn't say anything at the time on here as many people love it but we were talking to some people staying there last month and they said exactly the same so at least it wasn't just us!

To be honest the whole resort can feel cliquey like you're intruding on a private party.
Im outgoing so didn't find it an issue but when we stayed at the Romanza last time we ovwrheard a couple saying that they felt like intruders.  Even though we felt more than welcome

Barras food ?? Sofia is a very good cook. Try her meatballs they are the best. The food is cooked in the traditional way - scrummy. Alekos in tasty corner has the best pitta gyros-and a large plate gyros is enough for 2.

My 4 year old daughter agrees with you. She ate an adults portion a couple of times. :)

Re Cliquiness in San Stefanos..I think the more times you go to San Stefanos, the less cliquey it gets!!..thats why we are going back for the 5th time next year!!..To be honest it sometimes feels like you are intruding on a private club in some places where the "regulars" will be given the preferential treatment and first refusal on things before newcomers.A bit of a catch 22 really because to become a regular you have to feel comfortable as a newcomer in the first place.Hoping to stay at Anatoli Apts next year so hopefully will not feel the awkwardness we have felt at another place in the past...only my opinion and I wouldnt want to go back to San Stefanos once again after missing out for a couple of years if I DIDNT BL**DY LOVE THE PLACE!!

There's nothing cliquey about Anatoli. I'm sitting on the balcony now at 7:30 in the morning looking out over the sea, and there isn't a clique in sight!

Mind you, Albania's not visible, either. Still fog on the horizon.

Hmmm I have to agree with the negative comments re Olympia, in 30 odd years of coming to San Stef, the only bad meal I have ever had was there in 2008.  My husband is a chef so knows a bit about food and isnt someone who is critical of other chefs but likes to experience different cultures and cuisines, but the meal we had at Olympia was really really bad  :(

However he loves Spiros at Nafsika and they are always gassing about bloody food and recipes whenever we are there!

I do know what people mean about cliqueyness in SS - some regulars do tend to like the preferential treatment offered and newbies sometimes can feel a bit sidelined, but its still a really lovely friendly place and hopefully no one would be put off going back!

RE Cliquieness-Naming no names but when we go back to San Stefanos in August next year I hope to right a wrong that spoilt the last week of our last holiday there a bit in 2011...it was all down to someone looking after their regulars in a particular way and I took offence because I thought I was becoming a regular as well!!!..Lifes too short for grudges and I hope to make amends next year. :-[
