·Ionian Independence Day, May 21
After centuries of scattershot foreign rule, the Ionian islands once again became part of the country of Greece. Parades, festivals, and a solemn ceremony – often headed by the Greek Prime Minister – mark this milestone in Greek history.

I don't know what the festival was for other than it seemed a local one but we were in San Stef about 3 years ago when they held one. It was situated in the field by the tennis courts. There was a lamb/hog roast and live greek music and dancing. There was a bar and everyone, locals and holidaymakers were having a great time. It was either the last week of june or first in july. We have been at the same time for 9 years and only seen this once.

Hi All
Yes I agree - Spit Roast Lamb in Corfu is the best - but will it be on ??

Hi Bob - looks like you will be there at the same time as us.
We are staying at the Thomas Bay this time - We hope to be eating at the Sunset on a Saturday Night for the Live music,
We will be with some friends Alan & Carole who also visit Stefanos a lot, if you are around - say hello.
I expect we'll also be in the Condor to watch Chelsea win the Euro-cup as well - (saw your other post!!).
Have a good one - are you travelling from Gatwick? - North Terminal now!!
Tony

Any idea regarding 2009 festivals? Went to a great one by the tennis courts a couple of Junes ago. Heard about another on the beach that we missed and were just out of time for one in Arilas last August.

I think I saw sheep & cattle once - in the countryside  - towards the south.
I have never seen sheep around the north of the island, I don't think this is sheep country somehow!!
I believe they must import most of the meat in Corfu!!

Bet you thought you were still in London until you saw a sheep and a cow. Must have been so scary for a city boy like you ::)

What exactly is a Townie then?
When I moved into this house 32 years ago, (extended it instead of moving), I was surrounded by green fields on 3 sides.
Then the Airport grew around me!!
My Father was raised in the countryside in Winfrith and Rural Essex, my Mum was born & raised in the countryside in Cornwall.
I however, was admittedly, born in a City-State - no countryside in the whole country!! - But from the age of 3 in rural England!!
Can anyone guess where in the world it was (my birthplace)??? - It used to be a British Colony!!

I live virtually in the High Peak, 2minutes down the road is glorious moors and peak district. Born a and bred a townie though in Nottingham.

Usually towards the front of September Don, last year we came back on the 18th-ish and it happened while we were there. Some headaches!!

Alternatively does anyone know if we visitors can have a tour of the Ionian Islands Brewery in Arilas. If so can we have free tastings?

Think she's still recovering from her blank fortnight last September. Rumour has it (well Glenn does) that she drank Corfu dry without even the help of a safety net. Just the torn fishnets. Now that's brave!
