Title: How tight are the Airlines on luggage weights this year?
Post by: Kernock on May 09, 2010, 02:51:15 AM
Getting ready for our first spell this year in SS. We are travelling out on Viking Airways from Gatwick.  Airlines seem to be tightening up on the luggage allowance and Viking want £5/kg each way over 15kg.  In addition they state only 5kg of hand luggage. Has anyone any recent experience if these limits are strictly adhered to.  I suppose I should be more concerned about Ash and the Greeks have a Air Traffic Contollers strike but wouldn't mind knowing.  I will let you know how the new season feels when I return on 24th May!

We sometimes find if your luggage is overweight it all depends on what mood the check in assistant is in. When we have flown we have mostly been ok and only had to shuffle some hand luggage about but others we know have been charged for being overweight. We have now bought some hand held scales and hope thay will keep us on the straight and narrow. We always go with Thomsons and the hold luggage allowance is 20 kilos per person and hand luggage 5 kilos per person which is not to bad. :)

Not had experience with Viking, but we got caught with Thomas Cook one year - 15Kg limit and we strayed over,
had to pay £36 extra and only got a receipt from a standard receipt book - so who knows where my money went!
They were quite aggressive in collecting the amounts.
Can you not pay extra in advance for an extra 5Kg as a special deal?? most Airlines do this.

Don't be caught out by the likes of Sleazyjet and O'Ryan Air on hand luggage

Their hand luggage max sizes are often smaller than other airlines, and they will sting you
to take it on board even if it is that tiny bit bigger  :(

I got a nifty digital scale from Amazon last week for under a tenner, so no more nail biting about weight for us.

Yes - we use one as well these days, but Mikee is correct- check each Airlines Max size for the hand luggage bag -
they love to catch you out, and charge - or force you to pay to put it in the hold.
Easyjet and Lyanshare both have smaller hand luggage sizes than standard - and love to catch you out!
