Title: The Olive Press 2009
Post by: don on August 02, 2009, 11:26:17 PM
Has anyone eaten at the Olive Press this year? Unfortunately we never quite made it this time. We would love to read comments about it as we really enjoyed eating there.

Had one meal there in our 21 days. It was very quiet with only 2 other tables occupied. l enjoyed my lamb but others were not that impressed. No plans to go back again next yr.

Yes Likewise - we said hello to George and it wasn't busy at all, but love to hear first hand if the menu has changed much?
We didn't get there either this year, we had to find entertainment for our Grandson and it was a touch too quiet!

One opinion doesn't constitute anything. How can one put one opinion against nothing?
I asked for comments ?   Yakida! Sorry monolingual!

No? well, ok, from what I re-collect after nearly 6 weeks it was a totally forgettable and average meal [ I cant recall what we had ], but thats just my opinion, it seemed to be doing badly and, imho, probably suffered from the superior cooking at the Beachcomber, and at least an equally good competitor in the Nafsika next door, try it and see.

"Monolingual Yakida"? sorry but that bamboozles me...are you learning Japanese? ??? :)

I have to say that I was totally underwhelmed by the Olive Press, and I thought they were expensive compared to others.

We passed Olive Press on a number of occasions during our 2 week stay in second half of June, but it was always empty (not a good sign in our eyes; maybe that's unfair but that's how we viewed things). Menu didn't seem that inspiring to be honest. Maybe we'll try next year.

i have to agree with swedebasher, we thought it was a bit expensive compared to others, the food was good though but nothing special.

Well folks, just have to say that many places are quiet this year ( although not all ), and it varies from week to week. The old end of the village has been particularly quiet.
As for empty Restaurants - they all start off empty each day, and someone has to be the first to walk in! They shouldn't necessarily be judged for being quiet - it doesn't mean they're not worth trying, or indeed that they are always empty. The Olive Press has had quite a number of busy nights - we've seen it from across the road!!

As a tourist in previous years, I understand what you are saying - but as someone who has lived here for a few years, I can see the other side too!

So Gwen does that mean Beachcombers is busy???????????????????????????????/

Some people rave about Georges cooking at the Olive Press, others say it's on a par with the resort.
That's not really important as it's personal choice and all the S S Restaurants are better than average!
Bottom line is all the business's need support in these hard times or we won't have a choice of restaurants in the future!

Yes Don, I believe Beachcombers has had its busy nights too. And a whole load of people were heading to Manthos for his Greek night on Saturday as I walked down. Bev & I see the people heading back and forwards at night from where we are at our shops :)

Am i missing something the Barras - have never eaten there.

Had several meals at the Olive Press a couple of years ago which were lovely.  Im glad its started to pick up.
Well said Tony - they do need our support otherwise there will be less to choose from in future.

Ozzy Oil - very popular and its probably important to book your table beforehand as they are very busy.Their BBQ nights are well supported too! Beachcombers is also very popular and recommended - the food is great and the view over the sea and the sunsets is amazing.
For good home Greek cooking - The Nafsika for sure. The Olympia & Sunset Taverna ( lovely setting too ) also do great food.

Depends what you want really - for Souvlaki, Pitta Gyros etc (or for a late night snack - as we do ) its the Tasty Corner!

As for the Barras - you know it well, Don & Sandra. I think the problem there is that they just can't get the staff these days  ;D ;D ;D
Sorry - only joking folks - my other half works there!

It's a good job you added that on the end Holistica - people would have been worried. We always go to Barras every holiday at least twice for a meal. Good food and very reasonably priced as well. There is always the friendly " Yammas" as well from George

Hi all

We returned last week from our 2 wk annual holiday - was alot quieter than previous years but had a wonderful time. We did eat out at Olive Press one night and had a great meal as usual - the menu has changed slightly - and George, bless him, didn't have any apple pie in. One phone call later and the pie was delivered in time for me to devour a slice. And his friend George from Magoulades gave us his own cocktail at the end of the meal - absolutely delicious. It wasnt as dear as some of the places we ate out at and was a lovely meal - yes, it was quiet but then the older part of SS was exceptionally quieter this year.

We ate at the Olive Press on one night in mid August. we have eaten there many times in previous years. It was fine, nothing spectacular but good plain food, well cooked. it did seem strange thoug without Simone chatting away. It felt cold somehow (despite the heat!)

Hi, I'm new to this site. Came back from San Stef last week after our 2nd visit.  Didn't go to the Olive Press this year (devastated to find that Simone wasn't there anymore).  Last year we ate there quite a few times and the meals were fab, this year we were half board at the Nafsika, but Olive Press looked so quiet it was heartbreaking. :(

Unfortunately we didn't make it to the Olive Press when visited San Stef this year as we always used to have our morning coffee with Siimone, and see Leo & Dora and a chat and it wouldn't be the same for us with them not being there after all these years.  But we had always in the past enjoyed George's cooking,so what's gone wrong?

It's not something that can be discussed on a forum, life sucks sometimes and things happen.
As usual - there are always two sides to any story, but we are friends of both and won't take sides.
Simone is getting on well in the UK and George is making a go of it in SS, I hear the kids are thriving as well.
Of course - we would have preferred it not to have changed as well!

Didn't mean what went wrong with S.& G. After the poor comments we wondered what had gone wrong with G.s cooking.
