Thanks Lesley, I thought there was available internet access in SS.  I spend so much time on my laptop at home, I really should take a break from it while I'm on holiday.  I must admit, I would love a tablet as they are so light and portable.  Finances don't allow unfortunately :)

I'm very impressed with the Kindle Fire, we have a basic WIFI one. Apart from reading books and playing music it can when in a WIFI zone - access the internet, check your email. All for £129.

Our daughter bought her dad one for Christmas (a kindle fire) cos she didn't know what else to get him and she needed to get him a "decent" presdnt to match the one she was getting me and then worried as he isn't technically minded at all (she taking me to NYC for my pressie!). Turns out He loves it, is always on it either downloading music, playing games and on the Internet (hasn't worked out how to download a book yet though which was the reason she got him it cos he loves reading). Been well worth the money and nowhere as near as expensive as an iPad etc!!

I've found I can't read my kindle fire in the sun (due to glare) unlike the original kindle.
Bee - it will be good to have a break - you'll have lots to look up and catch up on when you get home

All tablets are rubbish in sunshine. Get a proper Kindle if you want to read in the sun. The technology is totally different.

Lots of good e book readers about, from Nook, Kobo Sony etc. these will usually also let you borrow books from your local library. My wife has a Kobo Arc, which is a colour reader, can be used in direct sunlight, and performs very well as a tablet, being a wireless device. It can also read books from Amazon (Kindle), as well as ePub format ones as loaned by our local library.

You are right Teamnikos, I can catch up when I get home :)  I actually have a Kindle reader but I'm leaving it at home and bringing a couple of books.  Happier to leave them on the beach while I go for lunch :)

Rover - The Arc is just an Android tablet. It doesn't use e-ink like the Kindle or Nook. So its battery life is much shorter and seriously will be rubbish in bright sunlight.

I'll be taking a 17" laptop and a Kindle Paperwhite. They each have their use!

Jimbo, the Arc has been used in sunlight, and is fine. It' battery life is shorter, which need not be an issue, and it is in colour, which is useful in certain applications. Best value at present for a simple, competent reader is the Nook Simple Touch, which has been on offer for< £30.00. This has an excellent display, wit access to a wide range of books.

There's a new Kobo called Aura HD, which is e-ink with a larger screen.

E-ink is an important issue for me. I spent 12-14 hours a day sitting in front of several monitors. All LCDs have flicker (even posh 120Hz jobs like mine, although they're better) which causes eye-strain. When I go to bed I can read on a Kindle with no eye strain because there is no flicker. Tablets have LCD displays, so they flicker. I have several for program development. People who work in front of monitors need to take that into account.

Weight is also an issue - even 7" tablets are heavier than a Kindle Paperwhite by a significant amount, and that's another strain-reducing factor.

Of course, everyone has their own preferred technology and use. I don't use tablets to browse the web - I prefer the 24" monitor in front of me now!

We just take our mobile phones and the Ipod which we have found more than adequate for what we need .We don't bother with books but take a few magazines with us.

iPod touch is a great device. Small and portable, Internet access and holds films, music etc.

That's the reason we take our Ipod Touch Rover. Just slips into your pocket . Gets internet round the pool as well.

Jules, you will also have noticed that it rarely, if ever 'crashes'. Superb piece of kit.

Bee you can also nip into the Thomas Bay or Athina Hotels - they also have P A Y G  - PC's for anyone to use.

And I can say that Jimbo is absolutely right regarding screens - - E-Ink Technology is the only good E-Reader in the sunshine.
But fancy boasting that you have a 24 -incher on the net - - - I can see the long line of lusty widows lining up now!!!

You are right Rover. The Ipod Touch takes no room up for travelling with either. Easily picks up any available Wifi.

It does Jules, but it's a little limited, so the iphone (or as I now have a Galaxy S3) is better, does it all....
besides text and phone calls, Music - films - video - and better communications all round.
The blessing of a phone is you can use "Whats App" which gives free messenger or texts, plus you can send video clips or photos - via wifi - all free of charge.
But disable data roaming of face charges.
Linda does use her iTouch as well as the phone, but just to save battery.
Nothing beats a Kindle or the like, with E-Ink technology for reading in the sun.

I also have my Galaxy which would only be used for emergencies. The only real thing the Ipod Touch doesn't do is make phone calls. I now have a new camera that also has wifi

Having enjoyed reading books for decades I was dead against a kindle but last Christmas Gill (against my wishes) brought me a kindle paper light and I haven't looked back.

On holiday they are great, so light and easy to read in the sun. If you run out of books you just go to a wi FI zone and buy a new one which arrives in seconds. I wouldn't take a book on holiday now but I agree with Jimbo, if you want to read buy a kindle not a tablet as you can't read them in bright conditions. The face of the kindle isn't glass so does not reflect the light.

I think it's "Paperwhite," Andy! But "light" is right.

As I'm a writer with a degree in English, people expect me to jump and down and rail against this new-fangled stuff. But printed books are relatively recent technology, and widespread publication didn't really happen until the 19th Century. A very large number of people in this forum will remember the first Penguin paper-backs. Books are great - they smell nice - they feel nice. But all reading is good, and I tend to read for the content, not the smell, and certainly not the weight of a thousand page hard-back.

It's also giving a lot of new writers possibilities to publish which the paper publishing houses never have.

And when was there a time before this that one could read in bed with the light out?

I'm an avid reader and still read 'real' books, but wouldn't be without my kindle - I still get a real thrill when I download something because I don't fancy what I have to read - and it arrives by 'whisper net!'  WOW.

Bought a really good 'multi' charger yesterday - it will charge our iPods, iPad, Samsung phones and kindles. It's called Juice, bought it in JLewis for 14.99. Saves taking lots of different chargers on hols :)
