San Stefanos news and views / Re: Smoking in Tavernas
« on: September 17, 2013, 12:53:13 AM »
We're there 30th June for two weeks Lilly........ Perros!

Hi Gav, we are looking at 23rd June, I must sort it out soon, going to go independent again, Thomas Cook flights seem the cheapest and fly out at 10.15 am so a little later than last year, looking forward to our week in Spain but a different type of holiday for us on a Riu A/I, going to London for Christmas too, thankfully I don't put weight on otherwise I would be like a Christmas pudding come June. ;D ;D

Interesting debate.
On the one hand I can see that a polite request from a non smoker might do the trick. Equally it might inflame the situation (pun intended)
I say it comes down to the law of the land. If there are no legal restrictions to smoking inside/outside restaurants and bars etc I would say you just have to put up with it or take action to mitigate. Alternatively go on the offensive.
Its a holiday though - leave the hassle at home........
We will be in glorious San Stef for the 3rd time from Friday will take up the sitting upwind idea.....

Well said and have a great holiday, lucky you, we enjoyed 3 weeks in SS earlier this year, going to Spain in January and back to SS hopefully in June, counting the days ................ :) :) :)

Nothing is going to solve the problem although I must add that it is only a problem for some in all fairness, I doubt the taverna/bar owners in Sans Stefanos see it has a problem as like most Greeks they are too laid back to worry about such things plus customers are customers whether they smoke or not so opinions whether they are constructive or otherwise will change nothing. No laws are be broken and even if they were I doubt very much that the 'thought' police will  arrive in Greece anytime soon, there will be no segregation and of that I am sure. By all means feel free to approach each and everyone Taverna owner and put forward your case for non smoking and smoking area's but be prepared for rejection and quite right too, it is their country and we are merely visitors and for me I am far too busy enjoying my holiday to bother about someone smoking, getting drunk or running along the beach wearing nothing but a smile, although I must admit that I was not struck on Gavlah's pink man thong which he was sporting this year, I spotted him on the webcam, bring back the leopard print one Gav ;D ;D ;D but it is his choice. :)

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Delfino Blu.................

The lastest post on TA has also disappeared now. The fact is though that if DB are getting any unfavourable posts removed then it does not give TA readers a true picture of the hotel. The not so favourable posts on all the other hotels/apartments have been allowed to stand, very odd indeed. The hotel has a right to reply so why can't they use this facility as other hotels/restaurant owners do?

The doggies are locked up usually, and if not they're okay if you talk to them. Sing "LA LA lal-la-lala" and they'll start dancing.
Ha ha, thanks for the advice but there is no way that we will ever attempt to walk past them again, dancing dogs hey?  ;D ;D

Fantastic homemade pizza and a cold Mythos, or 3, whilst looking out over the valley. We always go by scooter but this year I'm determined to find the shortcut through the olive groves and walk up there.

Hi benson, we tried the short cut a couple of years ago which is up a short steep lane on the right at the crossroads, as we approached the few houses we were chased by a pack of dogs baring their teeth, frightened the life out of us as a few weeks prior to this not far from where we live we were chased by a pack of vicious dogs near a farm, never peddled so fast in all our lives. We had to turn back in SS and still ended up going the road way which is the way we always walk to Avilotes now, the scenic route put us off.

Debra, as you approach Avilotes turn right and keep walking a few minutes and it is on the right, opposite side to the pharmacy.

Julied yes they are open for lunch.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Panorama restaurant Afionas

Hi, yes Afionas is a beautiful  village, we always walk from Sans Stefanos to Afionas every time we are on holiday, it is such a lovely walk. We usually have lunch at the Panorama but this year for a change we tried the new restaurant which is accessible through the houses/tiny street when you pass the village square, brilliant views, friendly staff and equally brilliant food. Afionas is really worth a visit.

Just returned from our 7th visit of San Stefanos, albeit the last before that was 6 years ago - and, by far the best place to eat remains Ilias in Avliotes; great real Greek food served overlooking from on high the picturesque green valley below. Prices general the same as San Stef, but quality and portions better. Eat later than normal with the local people. If a crowd of you intend to go, call ahead to book a table and to give them a chance to prepare properly. Outstanding.

We always visit Ilias for lunch when in SS, we really enjoy the walk from SS to Avilotes, this year during out 3 week stay we enjoyed 3 lovely lunches at Ilias. The food was amazing and like you say the views are so picturesque, always a relaxing atmosphere. Also love the sweets that you are given when you pay your bill. We have never been of an evening because we did not fancy the walk in the dark so I suppose a taxi would be necessary for evening visits. Next time we visit we will definetly book a taxi and try an evening visit to this superb tavern.

At the end of the day the village is renowned for Couples and Families and that tag helps to keep most undesirables away like lager louts which we would all absolutely hate. Hearing kids playing and laughing is a tonic to everyone. :)

Hi Jules, I totally agree, it is lovely to hear the laughter of children and see them having fun, after all we were all children once.  :) :)

Show me the way to the Romanza
Every night I've been hugging my towel
Dreaming dreams of the Romanza
And the vacant sunbed that waits for me

Sha la la la la la lah
