Out and About / Re: Walk to Arillas and Sidari
« on: September 11, 2017, 01:35:12 PM »
We stayed in Arillas this year, so did the walk the other way around.  From the San Stefanos Travel office, its about a 15 minute walk up hill to Akrotiri (nice café/restaurant, wonderful views), then another 20 mins or so down to Arillas, via another café (Gravia).

Last time we were in SS, we took a boat trip via Porto Timoni to Paleokastritsa.  Its a lovely little beach.  How long would it take to walk there from Arillas?  We're staying at Kaloudis at the end of August. :)

Next year will be our first time in the school holidays. Be interesting to see how the resort differs from late June when we have traditionally visited!

Gav, we've been twice to SS in the late May school holiday week.  Have to say, it was a lot quieter than when we went in early September (our first time).  The weather wasn't as warm and the sea was cooler!  We'd decided against going in the July/Aug period due to the 35+ temperature.  Restaurants were all open as normal though and it still had that special feeling, just a little more subdued - bit like we all are when we first wake up!

Tides??!  I didn't realise San Stef beach was tidal.  We'd heard that the beach was narrow this year, especially near Havana and Mango, but had assumed it was the winter storms again.  Can anyone elaborate on the tides for me (preferably without resorting to O level geography and Longshore Drift!!)  :)

Sadly we won't be coming to San Stefanos this year, but continue to watch the forum and webcam with fond memories.  You mentioned the hotel next to Delfino Blu - do you know what its going to be called or if its an extension of DB?  When we stayed there 2 years ago, we understood it was a separate hotel.  I understand the DB are building a spa of some kind too?  I know Kostas divides opinion on this forum, but it would be nice to know what he's up to!

Had a quick look on the webcam today - where's the beach gone!?  Weather forecast sounded pretty awful, so I guess that's the cause of the high water and lack of sand.

Great pics and report - I can thoroughly recommend Brouklis in Arillas if you venture over the hill.  We went 2 years ago with my in-laws and it was terrific, although it was incredibly hot when we went - not their fault!!

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Summer Dreams.

I'd second the recommendation for the sardines at Summer Dreams - though I can't compare them to those at Waves.  They also did a very good pizza for us and a large, well flavoured greek salad.  Now there's a question - best greek salad in the village...?

I think the wind could be due to the change of diet?

Thanks Rilo, I knew I could rely on someone to pick up on that one!  The other thing we noticed about September was the number of wasps around.  Virtually non-existent in late May and June (when we returned for our 2nd visit), but rather a lot in Sept.  I assume this was down to the harvesting and maturing fruit.

Our first visit was in mid Sept and we arrived to a crashing thunderstorm and high winds, thinking 'whatever have we done?!'  We did have quite a lot of wind during our visit, but as has already been said, the temperature of the sea and pools is lovely.

We're heading out there next week :) just looking for any latest recommendations from those who are out there or recently returned. Are there any not to be missed dishes, new venues or  pleasant surprises from this years menus? Cheers.

Sellsy, we were early this year (late May school hols). With our 5 year old we went to the tried and tested Little Prince and Zorbas the most.  As Gavlah says, Zorbas dancing was brilliant this year, and I have to say their food was very good too on the 4 times that we went. We preferred it to the Little Prince this year, although the welcome there was very good as always.  We had a very disappointing meze and greasy chips at 2 Stars. Summer Dreams sardines and chips were very nice too. We really must try a few more places when we come back! Quattro opened on our last day but we had already booked for the evening (Zorba's unsurprisingly!).  If you venture out of the resort, we had a brilliant meze in the old harbout at Paleocastritsa when we went there on a boat trip.

You may be surprised how far you can walk this year, the rocks that jutted out from the cliff are no longer there, presumably covered by sand.  I may not be thinking of the same beach though, but its definitely worth seeing how far you can get without having to endure the hill!
