Title: Greek Fires
Post by: Zimmer on August 24, 2009, 03:38:51 PM
Apologies in advance if this isnt a thread on your favourite topic however, as we all love Greece, it's good news that the wind has dropped and the fire fighters are beating the flames, sometimes living in a [usually ] boring weather system has it's advantages

Corfu doesn't suffer too badly from severe fires, maybe because it's so green, but there have been times when it's happened - just on a smaller scale. I remember one August Holiday some years ago, seeing seaplanes fight fires!
Imagine buying a property there and losing everything - consumed by fire - awful thought!
It's something Greece, Italy, and many other countries - USA & Australia included, suffer in a long dry summer.
I feel sorry for these people who have to start again!

We were in Kefalonia a few years back and had to evacuate our place. Seemed odd seeing water bombs and a few blokes trying to beat out flames with a besom. The flames came within 10 yards...scary!!

Our closest experience was on the Island of Andros, in Batsi - severe fire got within a few hundred metres, but we could feel the heat and were worried we would have to evacuate and leave all our stuff!
Luckily the Planes water-bombed & saved the resort, but the smoke was pure hell, must have been in the nineties, but still remember it!
