With only 2 weeks to go till the season opens I thought I would start a new thread to look at the weather in Corfu over the coming Spring months, the weather is a bit of a hobby of mine so I hope you excuse my indulgence ;)
As anyone who has visited Corfu in April/May will know the weather can be variable, last year early May brought hot sunshine up to 30c but the year before it was wet and cool.
So what about the new season in May 2013?
Obviously two weeks out its too early to forecast but its worth looking at developments in the weather over Southern Europe. Corfu has just endured one of its wettest winters on record with endless heavy rain and strong winds. This was caused by the same weather pattern that brought the UK a dry, cold and at times snowy winter as the Jet Stream that carries Atlantic depressions was displaced well south of the UK and into the Mediterranean .
The whole Mediterranean basin had 3 months of wet miserable weather as the Jet Stream swept overhead and this persisted throughout March, however, this weekend at last sees the Jet Stream moving out of the Mediterranean and back to its normal posistion across the UK.
This is already bringing a big improvemenmt in the weather in Corfu as temperatures rise to 23c with sunny skies, these conditions will persist well into next week as high pressure settles over the Balkans. In the meantime the UK gets a super soaker from the realigned Jet Stream that now passes over my house!
Anyone going to Corfu for an out of season holiday next week is in for a treat as temperatures reach 25c, a level usually reserved for late May.
As the new season approaches I will be looking to see whether this pattern is maintained giving Corfu a good start to the summer 8) or whether the Jet Stream moves back into the Mediterranean and becomes a Corfu Holiday party pooper :'(

Thanks Andy that's a very interesting post hope it's nice for when we visit in June 8)
-
Yes, very interesting post Andy, but with so much information you sound very much like someone else!
-
Thanks Andy. Will be interesting to see what the weather brings to Corfu during the Summer months
-
Having left London early this morning around 3c it was wonderful to arrive on Corfu soil to 23c. I was also surprised that the Easyjet flight seemed to have (it was a full flight from LGW) seemed to be many tourists on board too. Outside the airport there were 4 coaches doing shuttle bus/coach services it would seem. So lets hope this wonderful weather stays for all our early arrivals and encourages future visitors too.
When I left 3 weeks ago its was damp, grey and not much vegetation around now arriving back 3 weeks later the wild flowers are in full bloom all along the hillside roads as we arrived into the village, my flowers in the garden have awoken with blooms of Mauve Iris' the Wisteria tree in full lilac shades, the daisy said hello too along with an abundance of other seeds I scattered last Autumn, you know you have to leave Corfu to appreciate this wonderful island.
So looking forward to seeing everyone soon........ 8)

I love Corfu out of season when it's quiet.I wonder if these early visitors are staying in hotels, apartments or villas.
Now that Easyjet are starting their flights in April it should prolong the Summer season in Corfu but it means the tavernas and restaurants will
have to open up people need somewhere to eat.
-
Well village life is always the same tourists or not so we also eat (popular to anyone's belief) in the off season, if anyone needs to taste 'real' Greek food; then our little ole village can accommodate - food and rooms - however you will not find any 'specials on a chalkboard at 7 euros a throw - we just hit the place and order the real 'okay what's cooked today' almost regardless of price if its a special its got to be good........and I am so happy to know all these easyjet and ryan visitors are going to experience what I did when I first worked here actually (started work in 1982) - our first guest were end of March (back in 1986 in a hillside village community in Kato Koriakiana nr Dassia .....so season going shorter/longer etc is a trend......do hope its gonna stay....... and for anyone coming for this years Easter crack those red eggs and enjoy.......
-
Great topic Andy, I have wondered for a few years now if the Jet stream is ever going to behave and head back up over Iceland to give the Uk ( especially the north ) any chance of a decent summer. Fingers crossed for Northumberland in summer , as well as San Stef this spring ! Cheers.

Hi Lesley,
In April 1977 my sister went to Ipsos with Thomson and everything was open, the season in full swing.
Has the Corfu season got shorter over the years?
If so its a shame because the weather in Corfu in April is on average a lot better than the weather on the UK South Coast in July!
San Stef should open in early April not May, last year we enjoyed a lovely weekend in Corfu in late March and Kassiopi was buzzing, we had lunch at the Waves Taverna and the weather was perfect.
Why is the Corfu season so short???
Andy
-
Because up until a couple of years ago you couldn't get a direct flight until May.
-
As predicted the weather over Corfu improved considerably last week as high pressure built across the eastern Med and temperatures on the Island reached a very nice 25c. This weekend has continued the lovely weather with sunny skies. So how about next week?
Generally things still look good, however a small low pressure will pass over Greece on Tuesday which will bring a cool, damp day to Corfu with some rain. After that high pressure agan builds and with southerly winds temperatures in Corfu will rocket. By Thursday it could reach 30c before dropping again by the weekend as fresher air filters across the island from the north, however, by next Sunday it will still be sunny and 24c so that isn't bad at all.
It's remarkable that Corfu can see a temperature in mid April that only occurs once every 10 years at home! and it's less than 3 hours flying time away.
Less than two weeks till the season opens now and while its too early to predict the weather that far ahead the pattern a the moment supports at least average conditions although their are signs that the UK could be heading for a mini heat wave by mid may with the weather turning unsettled in the Mediterranian
Andy

Thought I would update this thread having just had a fantastic hot and sunny week in Corfu courtesy of the jet stream which remains stuck in it present position feeding very warm air from North Africa across Eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean.
The flip side to this is that the weather over Spain, France and the UK will tend in the opposite direction and be mostly wet and cool, indeed after a reasonable bank holiday the outlook for the UK for the rest of may is very poor.
In Corfu the early heat wave is likely to continue for another 10days with just the odd shower or thunderstorm, anyone booking an early break to San Stef over the next two weeks is likely to enjoy some excellent weather.
If I hadn't just come back I would be booking a week myself!

Hi, we are flying out on the 20th of May for a fortnight and can't wait :D but all the forecasts I've looked at are promising rain for most of that first week?! Surely not!! We are familiar with Greece, having been to Stoupa a number of times, also to Parga, Mastihari & Pefkos, but never had much rain! Anyway, weather aside we are very much looking forward to our first visit to Corfu

Hi, I had a look at acu weather and they have the forecast for your first week showing sun, sun, sun all the way and pretty much the same for your second week with a little cloud on some days. I doubt very much that it will rain all day long every day. We looked at the forecast one year just before we left for Corfu and that also said rain every day and guess what it did not rain once, enjoy your first visit and have a great time. We fly out on the 3rd June for 3 weeks and can't wait.

Ignore accuweather - complete waste of time - they just follow each weather prediction model run that are run 4 times a day.
-
One thing to note is that forecasts are for Kerkira town. Quite often it rains and has thunder storms there when it's clear and lovely in Ag Stef.
UK Met Office forecasts are as reliable as any forecast can be. Looks like Tuesday next week is going to be very hot.
Meanwhile, the rest of May looks cold and rubbish in the UK.

As long as we get a bit of sun so that we can sit and enjoy a Mythos around the Kapetanios pool we'll be extremely happy :) world weather online was the forecast I looked at, just now it changed to sunny for the first week so I may stick with that one!! Not anything to do with this topic, but how far away is the supermarket from the Kapetanios? We have older relatives with us and I think we will be up and down the hills few times a day fetching groceries and water for us all!!

I know, I was just giving an example of how different forecasts say different things, in truth I ignore them all.

Hi,
We are staying at Kapetanios too for 3 weeks this time but we arrive on the day you leave so won't get to meet you :(, booked independently this time and saved a tidy sum. The nearest supermarket is about 8 minutes or less down the hill from the apartments, you pass the Sunset tavern on the right then just keep going and the supermarket is also on your right, Kapetanios sell large bottles of water so no need to carry them up the hill, we usually buy a few small bottles for the beach and fill them up when needed, the supermarket will also deliver your groceries for you so no need to carry anything up the hill apart from yourself after a few ouzo's. ;D ;D
-
Also the new supermarket next to to Hippopots and Ice Cream Place offers free delivery on minimum orders, they will deliver for you up the hill, call 26630 51485 or pop in and see them.

I have the Accu Weather app on my phone and it picks up Sidari so a bit closer
Next weeks weather looks like this according to them....
Mon 13/5 - 21c Thunderstorm possible
Tues 14/5 - 22c Sunny
Weds 15/5 - 22c Partly cloudy
Thurs 16/5 - 24c Partly Cloudy
Fri 17/5 - 27c Sunny
Sat 18/5 - 24c Sunny
Sun 19/5 - 24c Sunny
Funnily enough w/c 20/5 is forecast to be a bit rough. Max temps around 19c and rain forecast for most days
-
I don't trust the Sidari forecast. The only proper weather station on the island is the airport.
-
Is there a weather station near Angela's apartments
-
Ah, good news regarding big water bottles being available on site! I'll keep the phone number in mind for deliveries but we are very active so will be happy to run around a bit! Hmm I'll look at them cost of going independently next year. I have a feeling we did look at going to Parga independently but flights only were very expensive for four of us so it cancelled out any benefit.
-
Cmon Lesley..... do your stuff...... report each day on how accurate the forecast has been!!
You can be our Corfiot Michael Fish

In my experience the best Corfu forecast is from the UK MetO:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/europe/corfuforecast.html
Followed by Weather Online Corfu Forecast:
http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weather/maps/city?LANG=en&CEL=C&SI=mph&CONT=euro&LAND=GR®ION=0005&WMO=16641&LEVEL=52&R=0&NOREGION=1
Followed by Weather Underground Corfu Forecast:
http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/GR/Kerkyra.html
Forget the others they are rubbish but keep these in your favourites!
Slightly more unsettled today with some showers over Corfu Town although San Stef looks sunny, the rest of the week should be fine and sunny.
Andy
-
I always use the Wunderground one as it seems the most accurate
-
Today Monday (13/05) its is a mix of blue skies, fluffy clouds and a strong breeze/wind, sea choppy (surfing weather) I would say about a force 5. Temps in the sun (away from the wind) around 23c. We did have rain and a lightening storm last night/early morning............ ???
-
That's pretty accurate then!!! (So Far!!)
-
I've been using this for a number of years as it shows the temperature at regular intervals actually in San Stef - show it says (half-way down the righthand side). It seems accurate.

Diolch Tredegar boy :) Siarad Gymraeg? I'm living in Aberystwyth, but originally a valleys girl!
-
Another breezy day here, sea choppy although have seen a few keen swimmers having a dip, lovely bright blue cloudless skies. Temps around 21c.
-
Hi Lesley,
It's lovely getting these weather updates! Can't wait for next Monday!
-
Love the weather reports Lesley think you will be stuck doing them all Summer ;)
-
Hi Lesley i just joined this forum, keep the weather reports coming in hun, thank you!! :)

Hi Clampit
Welcome to the forum

Will update tomorrow as I drink my frappe overlooking the beach at my place of work, overlooking the beach, sea and pool bar - LOL its a hard life but someone has to do it......... see you all soon & a quick update this evening the wind is dropping so looking forward to some higher temps in the morning here....oh yeh and fireflies this evening back in the village now (Avliotes) xxxxx
-
Wednesday 11.00 hours - slight drop in the wind however think its changed direction as it is now feels a lot cooler wind. Some brave are sunbathing, I've got a jacket on today however. Skies not as clear today blue bits but cloud cover. Sea calmer but after all the winds the poor beach has loads of sea weed, think Mr Tractor man is fighting a real battle so far this early part of the summer.
TV forecast is for warmer weather towards end of week........ ;)
-
thanks Lesley. Its rubbish here - feels like winter!!
-
Hope the weather will be sunny for 27th May coz thats when i will be there, yippeeee ;D
-
Thursday 20.00 hrs - Delay in writing this as was hoping for the sun to break though which it didn't. So today it was warmer due to very little wind but low grey cloud cover, never saw the sun and there was a few tiny tiny spots of sand type rain other than that it was an ideal day for walking and exploring which many of our guests told me they did......
-
Great reports Lesley, much better than reading the data from Corfu Airport!
Weather should pick up this weekend as the cool northerly flow is cut off and the wind swings round to the south.
Looking back I cant believe how lucky Gill and I were over Greek Easter, 9 days and only two afternoons with cloud, some days were like high summer!
Cant wait to return in July.
Andy

Friday 17th May - well well that was some downpour early hours of morning, high winds blew my village shutters open. However after going back to sleep and awaking for morning coffee - the sun has finally broken through, the wind has changed direction and is from the south with sand particles/dust from Africa. So summary - warm winds, pleasant temps approx. 24c, sky blue with sun partially shaded.
Beach must have been cleared very early morning as it is looking good, all seaweed cleared away however the rows of sunbeds not out as yet.
Forecast as Andy's says looking good - if the wind drops tomorrow we should see high temps again top 20's.........
-
Thanks for the update Lesley couldn't believe they had cleaned the beach so quickly this morning 8)
-
Family living in Skiathos say no sun beds on beach there yet.Apparently licences had to be applied for last week perhaps the same goes for Corfu.Hope they are there for our arrival on June 10th .I hate sitting on sand and struggling to get back up !!!! ;)
-
Saturday - its a beautiful day......a slight warm breeze, blue skies, sea gently lapping, views across towards Diapontian islands not so clear, this could be a heat haze as the forecast is for 31c today.......
and sunbeds well today there are 2 rows of blue ones and yellow ones out......
Should be a good weekend too........
-
Thanks for the update Lesley 8)
-
Monday the beginning of another beautiful week here in Agios (San) Stefanos. Breezy today, with lots of waves, beach still looking good. Sunbeds outside the Waves and Athena Hotel. Blue skies, lots of sun and around 27c, no clouds in sky. Clearer across towards Manthraki island. Have a good week.........
-
Have seen that someone who was flying out today says that there is a forecast of rain for three or four days towards the end of the week hope it's overnight and doesn't spoil anyones holiday after the poor weather we have had over here lately
-
Wednesday - Awoken at 06.00 by heavy rainfall lasted about 40 mins.....now dry and after morning cloud cover now blue skies, partial clouds with sunny spells slight breeze. Calm sea and around 25c......
-
A lovely clear day today now that the haze has cleared.
Yesterday was overcast for most of the day and it rained lightly at around 8pm. There was a warm wind which came from the south and dropped a load of African sand on all the cars and swimming pools.
-
A cloudy day so far today, even started to rain just now but looks like it might be blowing over and brightening up. I hope it does as there is a wedding down at Margaritas this afternoon.
-
Forecast is for showery weather for about five days. Good excuse to sit in a bar!
-
Forecast is for showery weather for about five days. Good excuse to sit in a bar!
Which is exactly what I've been doing all day! :)
-
Beautiful sunny day today. Temps in the high 20's. There has been a storm brewing over the islands but so far hasn't reached land yet.
-
Sounds good to me :)
-
Well looks like it poured it down in San Stef last night!!!! Ozzy Oils had just prepared the BBQ and the heavens opened!!
Apparantly cloudy this morning...... hope it improves for poor Bee after her delay last night
-
Thunderstorm risk remains for coming week.
When we visited in early June 2009 for 2 weeks one of the weeks was v humid with early morning rain/thunderstorms - one of the days we had a huge thunderstorm that lasted until midday. Then the 2nd week it was completely clear with much drier heat.
Thunderstorms not unusual for 1st half of June in the Med, as the weather settles down for the rest of the Summer.
-
Seems to have cleared quite nicely and the sun appears to be making an appearance.
-

Ozzie OIL BBQ on a Monday, that's unusual, it's normally Tuesdays!

Today is Tuesday, atleast it is here in San Stef, and the BBQ is definately tonight!
;D
-
Well they put it on Facebook themselves!!
-
They actually put it on first thing this morning
-
It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day today, Wednesday with at least 6.5 hours of solid warm sunshine and blue skies and very lovely temps too approx. 27c. After an early morning dark cloud hovered over us it changed direction and provided a much needed swimming pool and beach day for all.......
-
Two weeks today [or rather tonight] we'll be arriving so after a few good days in the UK weather wise which is getting us in the mood. We'll be hoping Corfu will take us to another level.
-
Must admit this UK weather is a massive boost!! Everyone is in such a better mood...... folk smiling, being more polite and generally happier. Boy did we need this!
-
You really can't beat sunshine & blue sky weather - - lovely
-
Yep,can't beat a bit of sun on your back.had it better than corfu the last 2days.28c.so geting in the mood for ss
-
Nope - no sun here at all - all weekend, watch it come back out tomorrow when we are back at work!!!
Its been thick cloud all weekend, cant wait to get to San Stefanos to have some sun!!!
-
It's been very cold down the East Coast for days. I was shivering yesterday. It struggled up to 13C today - was 11C yesterday.
-
Lovely sunshine all week end here in Cheshire :)Changing on Tuesday though :(
-

Move south Jimbo, BBQ yesterday with full sun all day, temperatures of 21-23, terrific!!
-
Or west of the Pennines - been glorious.
-
Been cloudier here in Wakefield today but still sunny at times
-
My side of the Pennines been sunny all day
-
If I moved south I would have to live in a small cardboard box. The air would be more or less smog. It would rain four times as much. Everything would cost about 50% more.
Just a few weeks ago, when the weather was crap in the south and west we were sitting in the garden having a salad lunch.
Just the luck of the winds. It's not the north, actually. It tends to be cloudy down the whole east coast when the winds are easterly.

yeh mate well ill not tell them about all the rain and of course safc

It rains a lot more in the west. And Wakefield. Here in the Humber region most rain comes from the western Atlantic and falls on Manchester or the Pennines. This is a rain-shadow area.

in Durham we are not quite so lucky though
-
The weather around outer west London is usually the warmest in the UK, with lower rainfall and snow overall throughout.
There is no smog Jim and we have Air quality testing stations all over which show that it's not too bad at all, compared to some of the more industrial towns.
People love whatever they grow up with and are used to. Work is plentiful.....
And yes - if I sold my 3 bedroom house and moved north, I could have a 5 bed detached for the same money, but that's not everything in life....
The downside to living near London is that a lot of the residents are the crap of Europe and many other places whose only desire is to re-create the crap they were used to.
That's why such a huge surge of people have moved away to other towns and cities where England still exists in a more recogognisable form, rather than a bland form of "Cosmopolita".
I intend to follow this trend before too long as well.....
-
Decent weekend up in Northumberland folks, bit cooler at times next to the coast, but , all in all , we seem to be heading in the right direction, gladdens the heart.
-
Cloud and sun in the south today - mixed weather during the week...
-
Hi any one no what the weather is like in corfu mid October
Regards Harry
-
It was beautiful for the last two years - but there are no guarantees!
We were on the beach the day we left last year on Oct 19th.
-
What's the local Stan Stefanos forecast for the next few weeks? The hotter the better as far as I'm concerned but that doesn't suit everyone.
-
Might rain Wednesday/Thursday then VERY hot!
-
29 degrees, unbroken sunshine and a gentle breeze.......lovely today!
-
Going to be in the mid 30s next week and we will be there!!That will be a shock to the system after the cool weather we've had here.
-
Dupnica....... so true it rained most of today here in the North West. Excellent news that it will be hot next week in SS. We'll be there to enjoy it..........
-
If the forecast is right, you won't need any winter clothes, with temperatures in the upper thirties.
-
Another gorgeous day here today. The wind dropped by yesterday morning, and temps are set to climb into the thirties in next few days. Beach was busy today, had a very nice walk this morning followed by a lovely lunch of prawns and sardines at Waves. This is definitely the life :D
-

Oh no, that must mean that rains on the way, Jimbos 'forecast' was totally wrong for the duration of my stay.

Hi Gordon,
Good to meet you last weekend, we were so jealous you were staying when we had to go home!
Its done nothing but rain since we got back.
Andy
-
D@G - I don't do the forecast. I merely look at it!
-
Hi Andy
It was good to meet you and Gill and we've had another super day here today. Yes we are here until Friday but you'll visit more often than us with your weekend trips. Wish we could, not relly feasible from Scotland though.
