Title: The Golden Beach of San Stefanos
Post by: tonyco1 on May 31, 2010, 11:30:41 AM
A few reports back are suggesting a degraded more narrow Beach - with lost sand - just how bad is it??
Has anyone walked along to the Nudie section, around the bend - how is it there?
Is there still room for two rows of Sunloungers?

I hear the Kantina is smashed up on the Beach and won't be renewed - is this true? No more Kantina, what does Leon say??
Any further news on this or is that the final decision? Any Water Sports this year?

Until the strong winds of our last couple of days there earlier in the month the beach was as normal, perhaps even a few yards wider than in 2008.   That was certainly the case at the far end of the beach by the cliffs, in 2008 it was just a narrow strip of sand a few yards wide, this year there was 20 yards or more in places.

The Saturday of our week in all changed, an overnight storm and continuing strong winds caused the beach to vanish except for a small part at the Waves end.   I really do mean vanish, it was sea in as far as it could get and you couldn't walk past Havana without getting your feet wet.    Bloody cold sea it was too!!

I hope the beach gets back to normal or as near as normal as possible as we do love to walk along the beach in the morning and this year Roy wants to go for an early morning run along the beach as well

the beach was much better by the time we left and sunbeds were back out all the way up past Havana bar, not as much soft sand as last year but its much better than it was.

Sunbeds in front of Delphino were 2.50 and they were serving drinks down at the sunbeds from the mango bar as well

If it's the Chinese  massage, it's brilliant!
Cured my bad bad one year, my bad leg the next.
Capt Nikkos damaged his knee a few years back - the Chinese guy fixed it in 30 min's - very good, but it's not the Spa type soft massage that sends you to sleep!
RECOMMENDED!!

It is coming back and we were well able to walk along past the nudie bit witout getting feet wet. Two rows of loungers back out the other day and weather is settled and getting warmer. It was really nice all this week with temperatures around thirty on Wed/Thurs with light winds. Normal service seems to be restored. It was going to be a scorcher yesterday when we left. It was v. hot on the tarmac at the airport at one o'clock!

Beach is fine - easily space for 2 rows of loungers and to walk past them

Havn't been round to the nudist section but no problems at the bottom of the Romanza path

We flew back to the uk on the 25-06-10. we went on the beach in the morning,or tried to, no beach the sea was up to the dunes by the athena ramp. Costos had a JCB trying to reclaim some beach to put some sunbeds out. I hope it is better in August when we come again.

Beach looked full today with 2 rows of sun beds towards the cape and plenty of beds occupied towards the other end.  Had lunch overlooking beach was a very calm day and the seaweed had yet again been promptly taken away from the high winds on Sunday.......

Jules

The beach at Havana end is noticeably narrower  (19/7 - 30/7) with not enough room for two rows of loungers plus  the space behind. There is one full row of loungers stretching further towards nudie land with occassionally little sets of 3 brollies behind it. There is still plenty room though, just not as spacious in previous years. They've had to build up the dunes a little bit to restore and protect the football pitch, by transplanting some of the sand from behind the south goal.

Dimitri from Little Prince said it will be resolved by several months of good north winds and currents, apprently it's happened before and it will happen again no doubt.

Hi everyone, my first post on this site.

Just got back from San Stefanos this morning, happy to report that the beach is plenty wide enough.
Over the two weeks that we were there it widened by a good 5/6 yards and there was another bank of sand about 15 yards out into the sea that seemed to be moving slowly to the beach.

Can't say the same for poor Arillas though, compared to 2008, they have lost nearly all of their beach.

hi Jules T,

We stopped at the Vicky Apartments, which we found ideal. Very close to the beach and a really pleasant 10 minute walk into the centre of the village.
I must say that we were really taken with San Stefanos and whilst there are plenty of other places we would like to go to, I think that it is more than likely that we will return some time soon.

We now have an understanding of why you love the place so much.

regards,

Just returned and can def say the beach is alot smaller than it was - although once you walk past the watersports (Nikos & Leo) it does seem to widen out to something similar last year - very narrow around the entrance to Athina area - sun beds right up against the dunes - but still lovely and clean and plenty of room for everyone - didn't seem overcrowded at all. Did miss the cantina but when we had beach days we could get toasties / coffee etc from Athina.

We just got back last night (16th) from SS.  Was pretty shocked about the beach - we went last in 2008.  It felt totally different - as people have said SIGNIFICANTALLY narrower by the Athina and all along there - the football pitch seems reduced buy the Havana Bar.  It's funny really, the sand has banked up at the back and we always got to the end of the sunbeds before the nudist beach and the past two weeks this was the busiest end.  This has really changed - the beach is flat and spread out more and by the nudist bit it is much wider - it's possible now to sunbathe on the beach to the furthest point around the headland - the rocks etc have gone and the sand flattened out. Seems to have been really cleaned and sorted out. So, in essence, the beach is thinner but spreads out more to the very end cliff (which used to be unreachable).  The beach feels a bit more crowded as not as many people around the Manthos, Waves and Athina end - they have just spread out further along - but in reality it is still comfortable on the beds - there is plenty of space around you.  Abou 300 yards out into the sea is a large sandbank and also there are pools of water (like little ponds) before the seashore ALL along the beach now not just one at the nudist end.  You ahve to wade a very long way out to get any sort of deep water. The beach is still good though and the last few days when the weather became SCORCHIO the sea was just still and turquoise and warm as a bath - FANTASTIC!

Almost makes me want to leave the confines of the Romanza during the day!! Might make the effort this year to spend a few days on the beach. I just love the ease of having my room and the pool bar near by!

The beach goes narrow when the wind blows hard, then retreats again.
we have lost half the width of the beach, but it's fine!!

Went to Arillas, beach has gone altogether in parts, to get to the nudie bit under the headland,
they have to wade there now! I will post pictures soon with a facebook link!

Is it my imagination or does that webcam picture indicate the beach is a little wider than last year.

Good to see all the parasols lined up like soldiers.

Boy, can I not wait now.

Here goes......
Big welcome from Aristoula and a catch up with all that's happening, and then down to see Sam the Man for those holiday essentials and then over to Maria who'll look after our money and then a wee wander down to look at Pavlos' chalkboard, wander up to the Cross, take in the deep smell of the bakery, stroll down to the Little Prince, shot the breeze with Dimitri, hang a left down to the beach, hopefully get the economic update from Spiros on the beach, kick through the waves, lazy Mythos in Havana, climb the steps, hot shower, glad rags on (well fresh tee shirt and shorts at least).....and then repeat it all again, and again, and again, and again........

In the well known words of that cartoon super hero.........Yabba, dabba, doo :)
