Title: Busy on the Beach
Post by: Dupnica on April 22, 2013, 07:04:11 PM
Have you noticed the JCB has been on the beach the past two days? Yesterday they were clearing the seaweed and today they seem to be

re-directing the river back to it's original course, over the past few weeks the river seems to have edged ever closer to "the Waves" and they

won't want that on their doorstep.

Hopefully the beach will be seaweed free for the early season visitors.

This photo was taken at the very end of May last year, the seaweed pile was all but gone on June 3rd. Hopefully this year it will be gone by the time the first flights arrive for the new season.

Blimey, thats a lot better than last year when it was early June before they cleared the beach properly.

Maybe they have seen the weather forecast for the weekend 28c and sunny, they might get a few day trippers!

Usual old jokes.

I don't think they clear the seaweed to save Gavlah the embarrassment of girlie screams as he minces his way into the water.

It's a very good fertiliser, and comes in on the tide - a gift from Poseidon.

They were working late last night the lorry had his headlights on going to and fro with loads of seaweed and Stavroula was there watching the

proceedings.Have you noticed she seems to sleep all day and come to life at night a bit like the Kavos lot.

No sun beds on the beach yet. Can anybody remember what date they came out last year? I know they were out by 28th May at the latest.
Title: Re: Busy on the Beach
Post by: dibully on May 09, 2013, 11:40:39 AM
Not sure about last year but the year before we stayed at Margaritas from the 8th June the only sunbeds out the first week were what Waves put out and were free so we had Lunch or breakfast there as a bit of a thank you then all the  Sunbeds arrived the second week so that was the middle of June when they got there Licences so not sure if that was later than usual

Hi is it true that they are not putting sunbeds out. I read on another site that you collect your sunbed from the car park area at 60euro and take it were you want to be and return it at the end of the day and get 50 euro back.
surely if this is true it will affect trade at the Havana and the other bar  down the other end of the beech.

Has I've just said on the chat site can't see it working what if you go for a spot of lunch someone could take your sunbeds and brolly back and claim 50 euros deposit love the beach but will have to think again if this happens

Outrageous and silly idea. Just what do you get for your €10- two beds and a brolly, or a single one?? Bet the sales of lilos will rocket to avoid the possibility of having your beds took back if you happen to go off the beach for lunch!!!

Not sure if these facts are entirely correct.Anon 0513 says that he has heard from San Stef, not San Stefanos Travel, Graham 999 is checking

with San Stefanos Travel and will post his reply when he hears from them.

Thanks Harry. I agree with swedebasher, buy lilo's and cheap parasols, give them away when you go home.

Just imagine if it gets windy, which it often does, there will be hundreds of lilos and parasols blowing up and down the beach

 and floating out to Albania!

Now I read these posts earlier today - so when I finished work today I asked around resort, no-one I approached all being locals knew anything about this perhaps its was posted on 1st April!!! As it sounds like Hi Ho Hi Ho it's off to work I go, after all how far can you carry your chair & brolly surely then the ones nearest the sunbed pound will survive and all other areas on the beach will be empty - anyway will await someone who knows to post - just sounds very off the wall to me........tell me its a joke or have I lost something in translation perhaps...... ???
Title: Re: Busy on the Beach
Post by: Andy7 on May 09, 2013, 08:35:42 PM
How can this be related to the cutbacks?

The sunbeds are independantly run by local people who pay for the licence, they will want as much income as possible and will know this idea is a non-starter.

No mention of this on the Agni Forum so I reckon its pure rubbish!

Towels on the beach are great...but have you seen some of the ants that inhabit the sand? I have a theory that a lot of the bites/stings we blame on mossies, particularly on ankles and lower legs are from ants or other things at ground level.

Towels and airbeds are all very well but what about the people with mobility problems who can't get on and off the ground or low level.  I'm one of these and am not even sure if I can get on and off a sunbed  :-\

I might have to ask some kind soul if I can borrow a plastic chair to sit on  :(

What I really need is one of those white plastic loungers with arms, but they don't have them on the beach :(  Thomas Bay Hotel have them round the pool, I might have to go there :D

Agree with Gav about this.

Bee - the sunbeds outside Mango are firmer, higher and classier than the others. You might find fewer problems with them. Plus you get a free bucket of ice and a bottle of water. You can even get drinks and snacks delivered to you as you lie there like a princess!

Yes I think you are right.  I even got stung in the sea last time we were there, don't know what it was but it was something I trod on.  Foot blew up like a balloon!! :'(

Yes Bee, I know what you mean, my husband has mobility problems as he has Parkinsons, but he is more comfortable in the quietness down the nudie end, but unfortunately the sunbeds don't stretch that far, otherwise we would probably use them ;)

To be honest I dont really like the beach but I go because Gill likes it, however, I insist on a good sunbed and parasol so I dont have to sit on the sand.

I would rather sit on burning coal than sand but hey thats just me!

Karen

There was a lad from up our way in Yorkshire who was in Zante with his girlfriend. He got off a boat and trod on something like you in the sea.
Foot swelled up and he went to the docs who gave him the usual jabs/tablets and sent him on his way.
Unfortunately he's now paralysed because of it!! Poor bloke. Apparantly these fish are common in Greece etc and some folk reat terribly to their stings

Gav, that is terrible! I do react to bites and stings and have spent a lot of time at the docs in San Stefanos having steroid injections!!  I take all the necessary precautions but sometimes they still get you!! It wouldn't stop me going though. 8)

I wouldn't worry so much about sea urchins in the sea around San Stefanos beach, not very common at all, In fact I've never seen one.

I was in Skiathos last August though and there were literally hundreds of them in the rocks just yards from the beach. I was surprised none of the restaurants had them on the menu tbh.

I also have never seen anything hostile, including sea urchins, in AS.

Best thing for sea-urchins is urine. Pee in a carrier bag and immerse foot. It's a kind of social thing, because you can get everybody to contribute!

Still no sign of sunbeds on he beach!

You do despair of the Greek authorities sometimes, all that lost income for San Steph locals, the weather has been so good recently that the beach would have been very popular. San Steph is busy from this weekend onwards (the little prince is full) yet no one can sunbathe on the beach.

Anyone going to San Steph this week for its famous beach will be very disappointed and may never return, in these hard times when Greece needs every Euro it really isn't good enough :-[

We go next Friday and to be honest the lack of sunbeds does bother us. we would spend some time on the beach and have no problem with paying the cost for four sunbeds. we're taking my in-laws who will struggle without. I might drop Cerys a line and see if they know anything, else although I know Thomsons aren't responsible I will ask them.

Same with me. We'll have a toddler in tow so the beach will be central to our daytime activities, it's not quite as simple as just sitting on towels when little 'uns are involved.

When we went in June 2011 it was the second week so 13th June before all the sunbeds appeared there was just a few put out by Waves that were free think to encourage customers which it did and we were very grateful as I had just had surgery and was unable to have laid on the beach which I love

Last year the beach was full every day from 20th May onwards. By not having the sunbeds out there is literally thousands of euros not making the way into the local economy.

It seems crazy IF its a licensing issue, surely licenses etc should be organised during the winter months?

Hopefully for all the beach lovers the sunbeds make an appearance before the half term break next week.

Plenty of sunbeds outside waves and a single row outside Havana. The beach has been shrunk so much this year that only a single row is possible for now!
