Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Vegies

The 'San Stefanos fuss' is a bit of an oxymoron.

Sorry, I've always liked that word but never had the chance to use it before !!

What I mean is the fuss is about an overall sense of well-being and fusslessness ( if that's what you want of course!)

I think I've just made up the word fusslessness but that has a nice feel to it too !

If you want it in San Stef, you will find it, whatever 'it' may be. How much of 'it' will depend on you.

Young Spiros at the Romanza says that most of the locals shop outside of San Stef if they can, simply because of the prices.

But hey, for us, its only for a little while.

To agree with Tony,

I used the machine again with the concentration of a wrinkly ninja but had no problems at all.

Katie also does amazing things with octopus (steady on!) and scorpion fish! The octopus was fresh from her husband Leo's frequent fishing expeditions.

If you've never tried marinated octopus on toast for breakfast, you've missed out on something good, I can tell you !!

Katie's curry is terrific too. Not like our average high street brown slop at all. Katie's is fresh, clean tasting and full of flavour. Her indoors and the eldest both reckon that the Moussaka is the best they've tried.

I have to agree with Waspman that the BBQ night entertainment is a must. No more 'traditional CD' repeats on that night ! Just real greek people singing real greek songs to real live music that generates an unbelievable atmosphere. Kostas and Leo joined in the singing too. Katie's mum definitely deserves a mention for her excellent greek dancing as does Andreas and the younger ladies.

It's easy to tell the difference between someone putting on a show for the paying audience and a family having a party. The Romanza family invited us to their party that night without question. It reminded me of when I was a small boy and all of my uncles, aunts, cousins, neighbours etc gathered at one of the old great-grandparents houses for an all night (and sometimes all weekend) singing/dancing party.

Kostas, Nitsa ('scuse spelling) and son Spiros have kept the quality and spirit of the Romanza right up there. The return of Katie, Leo, Alex and the young 'uns have helped steer the feel of the place back towards one great big family for all.

Sorry if I seem to be going a bit mushy but there are very few places for me like this one. It's not just the views, the hotel layout or anything like that. It's the people. Truly great people.

Yes, I know that this thread was last posted to about a year ago but it was the first Thomas Bay cash point machine thread that I found !

Just back from two weeks at the Romanza. Had an amazing time once again except for one little hiccup (which was probably my fault).

Being helpful, the Thomas Bay guys had taped a handy bit of paper above the cash dispenser slot of the machine saying roughly 'get your cash below' because some holidaymakers had looked for their cash from the Receipts dispenser slot.

Unfortunately the sun melted the tape glue and the paper curled up and out obscuring the cash slot when looked at from above (I'm 6'  3"). I spotted the receipt easily enough (coz it came out of the receipt slot ... funny that !) but I didn't spot the cash poking out because of the handy bit of paper stuck out further so the machine took it back (too darn quick if you ask me !).

I now have to wait for 30 days for my bank to 'fully investigate' the matter to see if I should get my 150 euros back. The investigation consists of checking to see if there was more cash in the machine at the end of that day than there should have been. Why this will take a month, Gawd knows !

So basically, if you ask for cash from this machine, clear your mind of all things, focus on the cash, grab it quick and sod the receipt. If the cash is retained your bank account still records it as a withdrawal with no automatic record of any retention. Whatever you tried to take will also come out of your daily cash withdrawal allowance.

Anyway, did I mention that the Romanza was still amazing?

Something my old dad used to say :-

" It's nice to be nice ! "

If something has been pointed out as offensive, unsavoury or even just a little bit off, continuing with it is bad manners. Simple.

Your old dad was a wise man!!

Methinks he would have liked San Stef ... a lot!

San Stefanos news and views / Re: New Excursion

I am told by the lovely lady at S S Travel, that they have added a new excursion , not on their web site- Corfu Town by Boat - I imagine that may be a long trip

Hi Folks,
Did I read somewhere that San Stef harbour was clogged with silt after some storms earlier this year ?
I think it was but reading between the lines all is ok now. Some people who have been and come back have been on various boat trips.

Excellent, Cheers Jules

Information and help please / Re: Airport

If getting a taxi at the airport make sure you say North West as there is a San Stefanos North East as well. Always agree the price first. I think San Stefanos travel around about €45 /€50 each way.

Before discovering how easy it is with Noula, we jumped in a taxi at the airport a few years ago aiming for the Romanza and even managed to get a price close to the one displayed in the airport only to be taken southeast to a hotel called San Stefanos Hotel or Romantica or something like that (age creeping in here). The taxi driver then upped the price by another 10 euros to take us where we had actually asked to go. This was despite polite but firm 'Hotel Romanza Please! Near Avliotes!' requests by us several times during his 'scenic route'.

You may wish to have the address of where you want written on a slip of paper. No language/accent excuses then.

San Stef is in between two headlands. The Romanza is at the top of one and Arillas is over the other so everything you'll want is downhill.

Taxis are few and far between. Cant remember if the Kapetanios still runs a taxi or not. Noula at San Stef Travel or the Romanza reception would book one for you.

The Romanza path down the 'cliff' is quite easy going down  (2-3 minutes) but coming back up in the full sun can be a bit unpleasant, far better to take the road route.

There are plenty of bars, supermarkets etc down in the town, some deliver if you spend a reasonable amount or if you turn into a blubbering pile of patheticness in front of them (not that we did....honest!).

Turn left out of the Romanza for a nice place almost on the same level (Voula, I think).

Hi JP,

Depends on your frame of mind when you start the walk back up !!!

If you're relaxed (well-oiled) and in the mood to continue your night out, it is a nice walk (via Thereza's and Kapetanios obviously).

If you're in a hurry  (or verrrry well oiled), the hill can be a mountain.

I'd give yourself half an hour to walk up it in one go. That way, when you arrive after 15 minutes, you'll have time for another snifter !

or maybe she isn't telling you something! lol
Bit like the body, only one of the joints goes first - -LOL

Yee-Gads, I hope I haven't reached that age already! Besides, My 'bit' doesn't have a joint in it !

Can't wait to meet Tony............ We'll probably laugh ourselves silly!
Plenty of late nights coming up for you I bet. ;)
Linda usually fades before me - I am more of a night person - she likes to rise early.
However  - I am never out much later than 01:30 at the latest (11:30 pm in uk),
mostly we head back around 00:30 or when we feel tired usually does it!!

Yes - I am sure we will share a few laughs!! -
Alan who is coming with us seems quite quiet, (and usually up for a laugh), then he will come out with a killer punch line or comment!!
He is also a great people watcher and commentator at the outstanding ones!!
Carole is funny without realising it - we all ''rag'' her sense-less and she lets it wash over her head.
I often introduce her as Mrs Bouquet (Bucket), or the Duchess which she loves and hates at the same time!!
She's good material for a wind-up as well and takes it very well!!
Linda has a great sense of humour, (has too with me around!!).
Mark (my son), also loves a joke and a wind up, and can take it, as well as give it out - I usually suffer at his hands!! LOL

Should be a good night!!

Looking forward to it! Now are we all up for a sing song? Some we may meet have pop songs written about them! Haven't they BOB?

How about learning this one :-

"Westminster Rhapsody" (Bohemian Rhapsody).

I see a little silhouetto of a man
Bloody Hell, bloody Hell, he's a Telegraph reporter
Digging for expenses, see the evidence is here

And the stables, chandeliers and portico a-co a-co a-co

Easy come, easy go

Mr Speaker, Mr Speaker, Mr Speaker, let it go,
My housekeeper needs a paycheque to be signed by me - by me- by me -

So you think you can stop me and expose my every claim?
So you think you can print it and make me admit to shame?
Or maybe
You think the public will blame me,
And just vote me out, just vote me right out of here.
Tennis courts and gardeners,
Swimming pools to clean,
The high life on expenses,
There'll be no more expenses
For me.
