Title: Top Tips for San Stef Newbies
Post by: Sellsy on May 16, 2012, 10:59:49 PM
As the season gets underway I thought it may be fun to have a few 'Top tips' or recommendations for first timers to consider?

Some tips will no doubt be informative and serious but I hope regulars may have many light hearted and quirky snippits of advice based on their years of experience.

Perhaps we may also have a ' whatever you do... don't....... advice also?

I will set the ball rolling with a post or two, hope we can all join in.

Top tip for newbies, ......early doors have an hour or two sitting out at the Tasty Corner, ice cold drink,  watching people come and go along the main thoroughfare, its probably the busiest part of San Stef, and a great barometer of the town and its patrons, good spot pre dinner but more entertaining late on when people have had a drink or two!

Top tip for newbies........... if you are walking along the beach towards the cliffs, and the thought of the nudie zone is too much and you need a drink to cool down, turn right up the steep zig zag clay path, it looks daunting, but its not as bad as it appears, at the top sits the Romanza, fab bar and a view of the coast that cant be beaten. From there you can meander down to the town by road with many tavernas on the way!

Don't forget mossie repelent (sprays, plug ins etc)- it's a must if you don't want to end up being bitten every night.

If you are on a budget and need to have cheap lunches and breakfasts - don't forget the bakery is open (opposite Barras Apts).
Otherwise, there are plenty of places for breakfast and Lunch.

Lunch on or near the beach,
Havana Beach Bar, Mango Beach Bar, Pop into Athina Hotel you'll see the tables back of the pool.
or Mistral & Waves on the beach.
Just off the Beach its Aquarious Bar behind Athina Hotel, Nafsika Hotel, Manthos Taverna, Summer Dreams, Juice Bar.
Back in town, almost any along the main streets.

Make the effort to get to the top of the headland between San Stef and Arillas, there's a couple of places along the ridge for a drink and something to eat nowadays. The views in both directions are worth it, and you can also fantasise about buying the parcel of land that's for sale up there. Don't believe Dimitris up at Fedra Mare when he tells you to request a little known Greek speciality, known as "spaghetti paparia", when out for a meal. Do have a Mojito, or two, in Athens Bar. Do have a Greek coffee and Ouzo, or two, in Kamini Bar.

Doing this walk ? wear sensible shoes and please watch where you walk. It's a nice walk and wonderful view but the path is badly cracked.   Take care to stay away from the edge.

If you are fit enough to cope with cardiac hill or come by car visit the Romanza Hotel for its Sunday evening Greek night.Things I love about it are as follows .
1 It is attended by nearly as many locals as guests. These being friends and family of the people who run the Romanza Hotel and its Taverna.
2 The music is provided by a 2 piece band and there are no professional dance groups. All the music, singing and dancing is provided by the Romanza Staff their friends and family. They are not professional but they are very good.Of course all visitors and family alike are encouraged to join in.
3 The meal provided is barbeque but if you are not a barbeque fan you can pick something off the Taverna menu.
4 The icing on the cake are the magnificent sunsets as the sun goes down behind the offshore islands.(Andreas would say the icing on the cake is his dancing). It is brilliant but do not take my word for it.Turn up & make your own decision.

Definitely agree with the comments about Romanza Greek night - although we don't stay at the Romanza any more (finding the steep hill a bit too much these days) we would never miss the Greek night and the music and Andreas and Kate dancing are great and always assured of a warm welcome

Totally agree about The Romanza BBQ night, fantastic Greek dancing and singing, everyone encouraged to join in, wouldn't miss it for the world.

Agree re the Romanza, we're staying there again this year and the Greek night is a must.

Another top tip for a great night out is the BBQ night at Ozzie Oils, its traditional Barbie fare, plenty of it, in a lovely garden setting. However following  puddings and after dinner drinks, the owner ( Kerry I think ) takes to the stage and sings a selection of songs that rounds off the evening perfectly. She really can sing and many passers by stop to listen. A very relaxing night, but needs to be booked in advance if you fancy it.

I have never done the Romanza BBQ night - do you need to book? and how far in advance?

Also - for the newbies - don't forget the BBQ night at Ozzie Oils on a Tuesday night - - where Kerry entertains with some great songs -
and the Tereza's on a Wednesday night = all worth going to!

Hi Tony
They like you to book the Romanza Greek night at least the day before. This allows the demand to be known for catering purposes and to allow the seating to be pre allocated.Ensuring that people who want to sit together can do so.

Go to the beach and watch the sunset   An unforgettable experience

Don't get caught by the man selling food from a basket on the beach    Daylight robbery ! !

Joint effort - Kerry singing / waiting tables and husband Niko cooking. Mother-in-law and father-in-law run the juice bar just before the beach road ( Sandra and Shane) over for the summer from Australia. Sandra does all the baking.

I'm sure I'll see you in Glens or in the Athina bar first!

Newbies......Why not pop into the Aquarius Bar ( Glens ) and see if any forum stalwarts can be found. Jimbo and  TonyCo among others are there at the mo,  hopefully organising a chalkboard for messages to assist members who are interested in meeting up.

Hope this board is operational for the rest of the season, we arrive late August when many forumites are also travelling. Of course you could arrive at the Aquarius 'incognito' and watch from a safe distance, just in case the 'real people'  do not live up to your expectation!  ;D
