Title: New bar?
Post by: Teamnickos on August 10, 2014, 06:21:28 PM
I remember mention of the refurbishment of a bar near beachcomber - but haven't read anything about it - is it open?

It was the old Sundowner but not opening this year for some reason.

Maybe pressure from surrounding bars and tavernas??

 Don't believe it was pressure from other bars or tavernas,in fact Manthos was quite keen on the Sundowner re-opening as he thought it would bring

 more business to that end of the village. From what I understand the prospective manager spent a lot of money improving the premises but became

 entangled in so much red tape and Greek bureaucracy that rather throw any more cash at it he decided to call it a day and walk away,Shame!!

People had agreed to lease it from the owner

They arrived but most of the planned works hadn't taken place (probably because of reasons above) so they walked away

Oh thats a shame. We much prefer that end of the village and another bar would have made it even better

We were quite pleased it wasn't open when we stayed at Nafsika in July - it was nice and peaceful on the balcony...

I also enjoy the peace and quiet in the old part of the village,long may it continue,plenty of noisy bars down the other end.I just feel sorry for the poor man who lost all that money.

Same here.  We have our evening meal at the Nafsika and one of the reasons why, is because it is fairly quiet.  Yes there is plenty of noise in the 'strip' which we are okay with and mostly enjoy!

Yes, when I say another bar would have been nice - I did NOT mean a noisy bar with tribute bands!!

I agree..... Another like Aquarius would have been great. Also would add more life to that part of town. It's nice being quiet but the amount of people who don't think there's anything down there is amazing.

I pointed one couple down that way this summer and they said the next day how lovely it was...... They just thought there was nothing there!

It was fairly quiet before - just a quiz or low music

When we sat at Nafsika we would look at it and think it's an ideal place for a proper ice cream shop.  Cones and sundaes and banana splits..... oh well, when we win the lottery...

The trouble is that relatively few people go to the old village - possibly because they don't even know it's there. Part of Kamini's charm is that it's mostly locals and residents who use it.

It's a shame that Olive Press has been closed for years - because the more nice places there are, the more people adventure.

I think it needs the tavernas up the old strip to get together and put a sign near the Juice Bar with a big arrow pointing up the road:

Want some REAL Greece?

Follow the arrow to:

* Old Church
* Old harbour
* Old Manthos
* The best restaurants in the village
* New harbour
* Cuisine ancient and modern
* Village history exhibition
* "The sex life of the Ancient Greeks" exhibition, with free herbal stimulants
* "The sex life of the Modern Greeks" exhibition, (no stimulants needed in season)
* Get your hair done by an authentic Athenian goddess

 I wonder if part of the problem is that people don't walk along there during the day so they don't know what's there.If you walk there in the evening you hit that dark,quiet spot just past Marguerita's and probably think you've come to the end of civilisation in San Stefanos.They don't realise that a few more yards and you're in the nicest part of the village.
We very often end up at Kamini after our evening meal because that's where we meet up with old friends,the ex-pats we have known for years who live and work out there and our Greek friends to.
 Fedra Mare is a relaxing place to enjoy a night cap and Dimitris is always welcoming and entertaining.
