Out and About / Favourite places to visit around Corfu
« on: April 11, 2013, 07:57:18 PM »
Perhaps some of us who have been going to San Stefanos for many years would like to share our favourite haunts with our newer visitors.
One of the places I like to go back to every year is Afiones. The younger and fitter ones amongst us could walk there, otherwise drive, leave your car in the village, before the Church and walk up through the old village which is absolutely beautiful just the way you imagine a Greek village should look like, little white houses and blue doors.
At the top are two tavernas,Dionysos and Porto Timoni,we prefer the latter, the food is great and not expensive. The views over St Georges bay are spectacular. If you go in the evening it is magical watching the sun go down and the lights come on around the bay.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Two Stars
« on: April 11, 2013, 07:11:35 PM »
Never eaten at 2 Stars, the cacophony of noise coming from the nearby bars and restaurants always puts me off,not to mention the dust kicked up by the traffic going along the road.Prefer to eat my evening meal in the relative peace of the restaurants overlooking the sea namely Manthos Taverna, Waves, Fantasea or Beachcomber.Nothing better than sitting there with a nice glass of wine, watching the sun go down.

Hope the w e b c a m  is working tomorrow so that we can see the kite flying on the beach. It is Clean Monday tomorrow I believe.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: A village Taxi?

I have been saying that for years! A minibus running from Romanza to the Church or New Harbour would be a Godsend for families with children during the day to get them to and from the beach. It would also be handy for getting the shopping home, but especially at night, that hill is a killer.
What would be a reasonable charge do you think?

Thank you for your concern Lilly, the bank has already credited me with the money, thank goodness,so they can obviously see a mistake has been made.
Yes I have seen lots of changes in 25 years.Back then there were only two hotels,Nafsika and Golden Beach, there were far fewer apartments and restaurants, the roads weren't made up and there were no street lights. When you walked home at night(or early morning)the sky was so black and you could see thousands of stars it was amazing.I do miss that, although it could be a bit dangerous walking along, gazing skywards after a few ouzos.
Hope the carnival goes well Lesley I haven't been for a few years but it's great fun I know.Health and Safety would have a fit if we had anything like that here, people leaping around on the back of open trucks or being dragged behind on old tyres etc.

I'm new to the forum but have been visiting San Stefanos two,or sometimes three times a year for the last 25 years,so you can tell that I love the place and the people as much as you do.
However I had an unfortunate experience when shopping in the Duty Free shop at Corfu Airport last October.I spent 228euros on one transaction with my debit card and was shocked when I got home and checked my account to find that they had duplicated that amount and had taken 2 x228 euros,
456 euros in total.  Six months on and my bank are still trying to resolve the matter as the Duty Free shop deny that they are responsible.!!
I wonder if this has happened to anyone else,I can't believe I am the only one.
My advice would be shop in the local shops in San Stefanos with people you know and trust or save some of your euros to spend at the Airport.
