I think that Dr Mike Tildesley is right to be pessimistic. The South African variant is emerging in parts of Europe. It's vital to keep it out of the UK.

It's unlikely that the EU will complete its vaccination dawdle until mid-2022 and possibly later. Greece may have to be very careful who it lets in.

As of 17th March there have been 351 cases of the SA variant in UK up from only 2 at the end of December, so its here already. Clearly we're using track&trace more effectively to keep the numbers to that low figure as they say it spreads far quicker than the original virus.

Look a bit wonky to me Kernock.

Government adviser reported as saying that it is highly unlikely there will be foreign holidays this year, BBC News.

That will go down well on the islands let alone places like Athens. 10% of all Greeks work in tourism producing 6.8% of GDP - you can't say we're shut for 2021 in March.

Ignore previous post as I have a picture now.

Grim there today though grim there is better than grim here I suspect. Though as I look out of my front window the cherry tree in our garden has a beautiful pink blossom which I find myself gazing at more and more often.

Must have been a storm there last night as the beach is full of seaweed where there was none there yesterday. You can also see the snow on the mountains in Albania as referenced by Lesley yesterday.

1.1649 at present which is the highest since March last year. It seems there's a steady rise which is good and all this with the UK and EU at loggerheads over the protocol. May get to around 1.17 or 1.18 come the summer hopefully.

Parallel with that is a plan to vaccinate all islands -smallest first - and create virus-free zones.

So that's Corfu being done last but one I think.

Hi Helen,

My wide and I stayed in Moratika in 1987, in a studio. Basic doesn't describe it but we had a great time. Seems like a life time ago.

Manthos - looks like the wall that ran along the edge of the restaurant overlooking the beach has gone.

Wales has promised that all over 50s will be vaccinated by mid-April which means my wife and I should get done around mid-March. That being the case we looking at Sept though I would love to go in June but I don't think that will be possible.

Looks like some building work going on at Manthos.

It really isn’t.

You are just jumping to conclusions that those vaccinated will be able to holiday in Corfu whilst those unvaccinated won’t.

So far there is nothing concrete to back that up and all current information points to a negative test will be enough, certainly for this seasons atleast.

And finally let’s be thankful that we opted out of the Euro vaccine procurement program, what a mess we’d still be in if we were waiting on the commission to  buy and supply our vaccines.

Agreed

Great update Lesley. How's the vacination programme going over there?

We'll probably get 17 here in Wales as well, 9 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon. :)
