San Stefanos news and views / Greek Deflation
« on: March 12, 2014, 03:11:09 PM »
Having read recently that Greek deflation improved from -1.5% in Jan to -1.1% in Feb I wondered whether that had had an impact in Corfu especially around the cost of day-to-day items. Though Feb's figure is an improvement its still in negative territory.

With the euro hovering at around 1.19/1.20 I was wondering if our money will go further this year if the goods are cheaper to buy. Deflation isn't a good thing, ask the Japanese, as is restricts growth. I was just thinking about the locals and if the mainland problems have reached the island.

Not exactly a bright holiday topic really, but I bored.

Terri - Brilliant. 11th to 25th.

Well Jimbo we're there ay exactly the same time, staying at the Fedra so I'll be walking past the Nafsica everyday. I'll look out for you to say hello. Will you look as you do in your photograph?

I'll be the 6'1" bald guy, approx 16 stone if the diet goes well between now and then and a Welsh accent if you hear me talk. Always walk to get a paper at around 2pm each afternoon and stop off occasionally for a drink or two along the way.

Hope I bump into you.

San Stefanos news and views / What a lovely day/food
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:49:26 PM »
Good evening all,

Awoke this morning with blue skies and a strange yellow thing in the sky, not seen in these parts (South Wales) since late October. Hopefully we'll get some respite from the incessant rain and 100 mile and hour winds now.

What I want to tell you is my youngest son, who is preparing for his GCSE Catering exam in early March, did a dry run today and its was spectacular. The theme is "food of the world" and he has to research and prepare a two course meal from any country. He chose Greek and today was a dress rehersal.

He had 2 hours 15 mins to prepare and cook the meal. He did lamb Kleftico with carrots, green beans and parsnips roasted in a bag with garlic and parmasan cheese placed in numerous little holes in the flesh. He also prepared roast potatoes in olive oil and rosemary. It was stunning. The mains was followed by Loukoumades, a dough (similar to doughnuts) covered in syrup and some cinnamon. They were gorgeous but I only had three of them as I'm on a diet.

We had a CD from Zorba's playing in the background with the sun shining through the dining room windows. If you closed your eyes you could have been anywhere in San Stef enjoying its delights.

This has got us in the mood and feel spring is around the corner and soon it will be that time again.

Yammas

So pleased for you and well done on your promotion. When are you going and where are you staying? I am not surprised that you have now perked up, summer will soon be here!

11th July for 2 weeks staying at the Fedra, again. Since Christmas I haven't looked at the webcam, been on the forum, checked the San Stef weather or done any of the things I do daily when I know we're going. I even changed my screen save in work which has a sunset taken from the Beachcomber. I'll reinstate it tomorrow.

I wouldn't mind the government going on about parents taking their kids out of school if they actually did some learning when there. I'm talking specifically about the first 2 weeks of July before they break for the summer. From my experience, I have a 20 year old and a 16 year old, the first 2 weeks of July are spent preparing for and participating in sports day (often at least 4 times due to the postponments), the school fete and end of year plays for those leaving and going to the next school up. I've had discussions with various teachers and asked them for details of what my children will be missing and they struggle to answer. So we went.

I don't think taking my kids out of school as we have done since 2004, has had any detrimental affect on their schooling. My eldest left school with 8 GCSEs and 3 A levels and is in full-time work and making his way in the world (he wasn't interested in university). The youngest is preparing for his GCSEs this summer and is in higher tier for most of his topics and seems to be in a good postion to do well (according to his teachers). Neither were or are top of their class types and would be the kind of kids the government reckons would suffer by missing school for 2 weeks. I'm yet to be convinced.

Back last July we did as most people do whilst on holiday in San Stef and that is to book for the following year. However, come Christmas time we had to cancel our holiday. Two years of 1% pay rises on top of 3 years without a rise at all stretched the finances to the point where a holiday was a luxury we couldn't afford. Thats the disappointment bit.

Last Monday I had a promotion interview and last Friday they offered me the job. That a 10%+ pay rise allied to a £70 reduction on the Thomson flights out of Bristol we wanted = going on holiday again.

Booked flights, paid deposit now looking at cashing some euros as its at 1.20 on TravelFX. Perked up big time. Now we can't wait. By the way thats the joy bit.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Smoking in Tavernas
« on: September 20, 2013, 05:12:42 PM »
I have found this thread and the other one from earlier this year very interesting and overall quite funny due to the reaction it draws.

I've never smoked but my wife used to and we're of an age when we can remember smoked filled pubs/clubs/restaurants etc etc which was a natural consequence of going out. I take on board everyones views in good faith and feel that Jimbo's advice re: asking if the offenders would mind stopping and/or reducing their intake a fair one but with one major proviso.

In today's day and age any polite request of someone, of whatever age or sex, to stop smoking, swearing in front of children/women, pick up their litter, stop their kids from running amok, stop pushing-in, or whatever the circumstance can often be met with a heated response suffient enough to spoil you're evening or worse, your whole holiday. We can all think of incidences when we have either said something and wished we hadn't or wanted to but were reluctant to do so in fear of the reaction.

Jimbo says he's curteous to others and having never met him I have no reason to disbelieve him however there are hosts of others who aren't. Mores the pity.

I suppose the bottomline is you treat each situation on its merits and act accordingly or not. Just for the record I wish the world was a more considerate place in general.

Thomson are having a Scooby-Doo.

We want to fly from Bristol on 11th July next year. Current price per person £318 (£448 from Cardiff which is only 60 miles further west - explain that one). I tried the "one-way" idea and was quoted £249.99 each from Gatwick as they had no flights that went to Corfu on the day I wanted and from the airport I wanted. What!!!!!

The return quote was £289.99 each which is a total cost of £539.98 x 3 = £1619.94. and that's without baggage, extra space seats (I'm 6'1" and my 15 year old is 6'2" - my wife's a midget 5'7").

What a load of *@#!$.

According to the Telegraph last week the price of airfares has only gone up 2% since the summer of last year. that may or may not be true for those flying from in and around London but certainly isn't from the provincial airports out west.

I'll keep checking everyday as I ain't going to miss a trip.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Delfino Blu.................
« on: September 09, 2013, 05:18:10 PM »
I've been reading this thread as it has unfolded with increasing frustration. I, like many of the contributors on this forum, have used TA to review resorts, places to eat/stay/go etc etc in many places home and abroad and have taken the balance between good and bad reviews at face value. In light of Silverstars experience I feel I'm being taken for a mug.

If you can't trust TA to leave first hand reviews alone what's the point of them. Businesses have a right to respond and thats where the counter-balance comes in so TA should not censor/remove legitmate reviews.

I use Skytrax to review airlines and this debate has got me wondering about them as well now (though there certainly seem to be a lot of poor reviews on their site).

Its all very interesting.

Hi Steve B

When I asked the guy who runs Zorba's (name escapes me) for the music a couple of years ago he provided a CD with a Zorba's motif on it which had 23 Greek songs on it and included all the ones they dance too plus others. Its excellent and I have a copy in my car for when I feel blue and at home which we listen to often when having a Greek meal.

Agree fully Gavlah

The one waiter has a hangdog expression which doesn't lure you in. The young waitress was very pretty and tried really hard to be cheerful and nice but she must have been longing to get out of there.

Still food was v good as usual but I do like a bit of atmosphere - no I'm not Russ Abbot

Disappointed with the Olympia this year. Don't get me wrong the food was still very good but there was something else not quite right. Difficult to explain but my wife and sons felt the same.

Will give it a go next year though.

Three of us for two weeks and no bites for the first time ever.

Used the plugins 24/7 and the mighty Autan which was recommended to us by the owner of the Margarita's supermarket last year. We normally use the plugins, Jungle Formula and other anti-mozzie stuff but to no affect but this year it was great.  :)

A lot of it is to do with your blood type apparantly. The rarer your blood the less likely you are to get bit.
Jimbo is that correct.
