Title: Cant believe we are back home!
Post by: shellbell on June 22, 2009, 01:25:27 AM
Absolutely fab time was had by myself and cockney in hull (steve, my other half) in San Stef. George was a little darling at the barras and Nickos was so funny when he was sober and when he was hungover.. bless him.
Best meals out for us had to be:-
1. Beachcomber Bistro for the fresh muscles and the surroundings..get a table at the front to watch the sunset...awesome!
2. Ozzie Oils bbq on the tuesday night with Kerry doing her crooning on the mike. Get your table booked at the juice bar as you go on to the beach.
3. Mythica....fabulous meal
4. Little Prince for the Sizzling Steak.....dont wear a white shirt or top if thats what you order!!!!
The only meal we were a little dissappointed with was the 2 star restaurant and only because we had been spoilt everywhere else with the fresh veg and rosemary roast spuds, they dished up frozen veg with the meal, but this is just down to personal taste.Yiannis snackbar was always busy opposite Athens bar and his take-away was superb. he said he prefered it to when he was in the restaraunt.
Mamma mias was always so empty I actually felt sorry for the workers every time we went by, hopefully it will pick up for them as the season goes on.

the bars were more empty than what we are used to, but our main stop off was Athens bar with nicko at the helm. always full and the rock band they had on last tuesday were amazing! They are called the Carnival and are also on this tuesday so if you are lucky enough to be there this week, they are not to be missed. The condor wasnt really our cup of tea...ok if you are into cheesy tribute acts and karaoke..we went in a few times for 1 drink but the d.j wasnt the best and I think if they had got someone in who really knew how to get the bar going, it would have been a better night! Last stop for us was the new bar called "Bar Code" still very quiet but had a d.j and got busy as it got later with all the waiters going in for a nightcap. I discovered the strawberry mojitos on my last night..to die for in taste and unfortunately price! They cost 6 euros but are sooo gorgeous! The main man in there is another George, very friendly.

With being right opposite the bakery..a chocolate croissant was the kick start for me every morning but I am now regretting it :( The diet starts tomorrow :o

the cash machine worked 3 times all the time we were there so next time we go I think we would do it the old fashioned way and take travellers cheques.

costas was there on the beach were he charged 7.50euros for a brolly and 2 beds.

We hired a quadbike for 3 days @ 65.00 euros from spiros next door to Athens bar. He also kindly let Steve borrow a moped for 10 minutes a couple of times to go to the cash point in Arillas.

we had a fab time in San Stef and are now looking to re-book so we will definately be returning even if its to check on the frogs!

Thanks for that Shelley. A great report on what you saw as first time visitors as well. The village has hooked you in as it does to so many visitors. :)

Don are you really sure you need to go back...cos after my first day back at work today, Im thinking depression has set in and i really can take your place if the need arises :'(
Im already wondering whos sleeping in my bed lol! Oh by the way if your in room 105 Don make sure the sink taps are well and truly turned off otherwise you will flood the bathroom as we found out... gulp!
Im soooo envious of everyone going in the next few weeks....its just not fair! Tony I meant to add in my report, after your recomendation of the english brekkie in condor we went to try it.....gorgeous! This was when we had overdosed on the chocolate coissants and needed something more substantial to soak up the previous nights liquids!  Don, can you say hello to George and nikos for me and Steve. Also i meant to add if anyone else is at the barras as from this week they are banning P20 suncreme as this has a reaction to there washing powder when they wash the sheets and towels. It looks like theres been a massacre in the bed as all the sheets are splattered with red as we found out to our cost when Steve was using it and someone else in the apartments. just letting you know before anyone buys it cos it isnt cheap! HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Does it stain really badly then. If you are using it and then going out and about swimming/sunbathing does it not wear off after later on in the shower?

Never had a problem! in the old days it would stain clothes Yellow if you dressed within an hour of application, (Don loved that!),
but now it bonds to the skin within 30 mins and should not stain if you follow directions!

I didnt buy it this year for myself because it was turning most of my whites a yellowish colour but steve carried on using it saying that its the new formula now with no stains. It wasnt that bad as previous but  Nikos came over to us and asked what suncreem we are using because in the odd room their sheets had turned a pinking colour and also the loo seat had gone pink in 1 apartment( not ours!). :-[
we brought out the P.20 to show him and he poured it on some sheets neat but then sprayed it with neat water. It went bright red. I said it must be a reaction from their soap powder as they wash the sheets at the back of the hotel in their wash house but george wasnt having any of it. He said it reacts with the water!
This is even when you have been in the shower and you have washed it off, but then one of the other reasons I dont use it is cos I think it still stays on your skin, and the smell of it smells as though your lathering yourself up in petrol for the day!!! Us ladies like to smell a bit sweeter than an oiltank and coconut smell gets me everytime! :)

That is just so strange -
I just tried it by putting on a cotton handkerchief, then left it a few minutes - then put water on it - nothing happened!
We have been using P20 for about the last 15 years now, the old mix was supposed to be put on and left for 1 hour so it would bond with the skin cells, if you then put on anything white (well you can't go naked for breakfast!!)lol - it stained the clothes yellow!
However, the new formulae does not do this at all.
You put it on leave for up to 30 minutes and it bonds with your skin and doesn't stain your clothes at all.
Once on it stays all day, it does not wash off of come off in the sea, it just seems to neutralise and absorb.
I can't understand how this stained red - weird!! Maybe something else is causing the chemical reaction!
Maybe the manufacturers need to know!
Tony - near Heathrow Airport - still not red!!

If I'd turned the loo seat pink I think I'd have gone to see the Doctor. I do recall seeing in the paper that the Greek Scientists had invented a pregnancy testing loo seat.

Are there different factors which may react in a different way - or is it all the same factor?

no weve only ever used the factor 20! I still think its a reaction to their soap powder. Don will have to report back when he gets there, you never know george will probably have saved the sheets he tested it on when we were there, he wasnt amused!

Arrived back 19 June after a week. A typical breezy week that happens in may/June.
Avliotes village festival Sunday 14 June in the olive grove near the tennis court was amazing & a touch of the real Greece rarely seen.
Walk to Arillas the long way via the road & the return over the top is still special.
The walk to Avliotes to see the progress on the by pass was a first as was the return via the football pitch to the tennis courts.
Drive up the mountain to Pantocrator showed how much roads all over the island have improved.
Agios Georgios retains a quiet charm with good cheap greek food at Angelos.
Unfortunately for me San Stefanos IS changing however & not in my view for the better!    The strip between condor & the Athens bar is becoming like Sidari.
The band in the Athens bar sounded fine I could hear them at Kapetanios until well after midnight. Would not mind seeing them at my local on a Friday night but not in SS shared with the rest of the resort, Rockin in the free world is not my favourite track at the best of times & certainly not in my appt with shutters & windows closed 500yrds away.
I know its personal taste & preference but when other bar owners start to try & out do Nickos will our little gem in the north west loose something?
Despite that still looking at Quietude again for two weeks next year with the whole family....hoping the wing is in a different direction.

I never heard the Athens bar with Live music before, they should soundproof a bit!! At least the Condor pull the shutters across!!
No one is supposed to have loud music playing after midnight or  00:30 in the resort!!

I never heard the Athens bar with Live music before, they should soundproof a bit!! At least the Condor pull the shutters across!!
No one is supposed to have loud music playing after midnight or  00:30 in the resort!!
I thought the music was supposed to end by midnight or at least quieten down...

Well, I'm touched ...... and pretty flippin amazed actually at Nikos domesticity ..... haven't seen him take much interest in the laundry ~ or the loo seat, in fact in our house ???.

Anyway they did mention it was happening and wondered what it could be. I did say to them it could be perhaps anti mosquito stuff or more probably suncream/oil but that normally it would turn whites a yellowy tinge ~ unless they had changed the formula. But yes, I also think it depends on what they are washing the laundry in. You can't tell them that though if you know what I mean!!!

I have heard about the new road, it begins at kavoudades near the pink villa by the Eko petrol station, is it ending some where near the Arrilas road ?
Hear's hoping SS doesn't end up like Sidari have had some reservations about advances in the village ourselves. When we first went to SS all you could hear was greek music filtering through the night as you sat admiring the lights in the hills, we thought it was sensational. Gouvia started out exactly the same as SS but very quickly became a nightmare are they heading in the same direction?

I really hope not and don't think so! Building is limited by the council, and the "noisy" street shouldn't grow too much more!
If you walk to the other quarter of SS, it's still fairly quiet and plenty of Greek music around!!
Also you mention the Pink Villa, it used to be white but was washed by the lads at the Barras!! LOL!!

As I said in an earlier post, I tried to make it happen here - nothing happened!! so maybe it is the detergent!!
Do you know what's happened to Monroes? this year!

We hope that they don't build much more as well - can't think of anything worse than having our favourite place spoilt by to much development.

athens bar did have the live band on but only for 2 tuesdays then they were off touring the rest of the greek isles to drum up business for when back in u.k. So i dont think its the norm in the athens bar although they do have a couple of guitarist/singers on aswell but not half as loud. The Condor i felt was out of place as a first timer to S.S purely because of the dodgy d.j and the terrible tribute acts not forgetting the drag artist...to be missed!Again if thats what you like then great but for me listening to live music and some greek dancing did me fine on this lovely 2 weeks away! :)

I am amazed that Greek men think they know more about the washing than the girls!! I would never argue - I struggle to turn on the washing machine!! LOL

It amazes me too ........ they know more about washing, soap powders, cooking, cleaning, gardening, driving ( even when they don't drive themselves!), painting, .... the list is endless !  ::) But when it actually comes to doing any of it - you don't see them for dust!! Honestly, I could write a book on the 'Greek Man's Mind' !

Tony, at least your man enough to say you struggle to turn the washing machine on! ;)

Stefanos never hires the same DJ for 2 years on the trot, he has had some great ones who get the place rocking and knows the audience! - - and we have seen some howlers over the years - he has had to sack some half way through!!
He soon works it out from the customers!!

No problem with live music loud or otherwise, or even dodgy DJ's or drag acts its when the sound reverberates around the whole place after midnight ..........we all go to SS for different things we like, but I remember liking Sidari 18 years ago & look at it now!
The police at one time patrolled Sidari warning bars to either turn the music down or close the windows!
The bands in my local are loud but you barely hear them 50yrds away never mind 500yrds.
Been back a  week & still got with drawal symtoms. :(

Been back a week.
Where did we eat somewhat predictable!
Evening Meals
Little Prince. 2 nights good family friendly place.
Nafsika 4 nights Great food my wife particularly likes Theodoras Moussaka & the Pastistado tastes like real home cooking the giant beans don't seem to be straight from a tin. The youvetski (the spelling may be wrong) was great, so tasty. In fact my mouth's watering now just thinking of the food there.
Spiro  a good front man.
Tasty Corner 1 night......love the Gyros plate!....wine's not bad either.

Lunches
Little Prince 1 average, enjoyed pitta with tzatsiki.
Tasty Corner 2........Gyros.
Evinos. 2 ......Good greek salad, great views friendly welcome from Yiannis & Spiro.
Angelos 1........Cheat really this is in Agios Giordios(Afionas)    great greek salad only 3.90 euros cheapest & best we had as was the tzatsiki.
Late breakfast stop Sokraki on the way to the mountain Emily's Cafe cheap for the first time ever found somewhere that sells Ginger Beer.
oZZY oil sandwich stop good for a friendly chat.
