San Stefanos news and views / Re: El Greco.

I remember the old Bar38 on the other side of the street, quiet and friendly with a great atmosphere.

Only ever been into the new Bar38 once and that was enough!

Shame the El Greco is causing so many problems as the extended bar is great to look at and improves the street scene.

What's the matter with you Waspman? Didn't you have enough rain over the winter months? 10 days of little or no rain and everyones starts to worry. Enjoy it. You'll be up to your waist in water before you know it.

Agreed, if Waspman says that again, I will personally put a hose pipe up *** ****

We have had enough rain in the last 2 years to last 100.

We went to Corfu with Thomson last month and on-line check in was a joke as you still have to queue up to drop your bags off and the bag drop one was as long as the check in!

No time was saved what so ever the only difference was that Thomson saved a few pennies not printing your boarding pass off.

It would be better if you are hand luggage only but if you have bags then it's a waste if time. Thomson should learn from Easyjet which has a far more efficient system.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Local exchange rate as of today
« on: June 14, 2014, 04:12:12 PM »
Following rumours of a UK Interest rate rise the pound surged against the euro and I got 1.23 at Thomas Cook yesterday afternoon.

With the San Steph wedding coming up I need loads of euros so the best exchange rate for years is very welcome!

There is now an official weather station in Arillas which will give an accurate temperature in the Village and San Steph will be very similar. The website also has a great webcam from the Horizon Hotel.

Although the road isn't officially open everyone including the coaches are using it, I went on it several times in May and its great saving at least 10-15 on the journey time from Sidari without the nightmare of going through Aviliotis.

16c and raining in San Steph and the weather looks awful on the webcam, however, the beach is being cleaned quickly which is good news.

The tan spaniel is owned by the Teresa's and last week he would lead us back to the Romanza to be rewarded with a biscuit or two.

One night he was waiting for us outside the Athens Bar at 2am so he must have enjoyed the biscuit!

I have been looking on line at the weather forecast for the next 2 weeks and I must say I am more than a little disappointed.

The forecast for the next few days looks lovely, warm and mostly sunshine. For the following 7 days, cloud, rain, heavy rain, thunderstorms. The day before we go home sun again.

Those out there what are your views? I have repacked our cases with warmer clothes, instead of all the lovely summery one I have bought.

May is often unpredictable in Corfu and this May isn't one of the best, however, we have had 5 good days out of 7 so it isn't that bad.

This trend of mixed but mostly good weather is expected to continue over the next two weeks although temperatures should not be as low as they were last weekend when they were 5c below normal.

Be very suspect of any online weather forecast beyond 8 days as it is impossible to know what the weather will be like beyond that time. In my experience the best online forecast is weather online, just type in weatheronline corfu' into Google and it will pop up, it goes out to 8 days and is the most reliable in my experience. The others are rubbish.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Forum stickers
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:15:56 AM »
Hi everyone - sorry for my absence on here - but I hope to spend more time here again, now I have recovered from the Operation.
I was still on the Facebook site daily, because I could use my phone to do it, but difficult to read this site on that medium.

The STICKERS are a good idea, I supplied wristbands for forum members, a couple of years back via Glen and it was reasonably successful, we met a lot of new people by wearing one.
I will be calling in as usual at the Nafsika to get mine.

As many know our holiday in San Stefanos was booked last October, but we've had a few health issues since then, mine is fine now - just fingers crossed time for Linda on Tuesday (6/05/14),
as she has a major operation to get through =  thanks thought for all your good wishes.

See you all soon, 17th June - 5th July - wearing stickers, & staying at Limani Apts, behind the Church (via Kostas - Fantasea).

Pleased to hear things going well and good luck to Linda for today.

Book a surprise week in SS so she can recover!

How do you post photo's?

Lovely morning this morning, calm and sunny and the forecast is good for at least a week.

Yesterday was sunny as well but the Mistral was so strong I thought it would blow the Romanza off the cliff!

Opening night at the Athens Bar last night and Nikos was on great form handing out shots of vodka and sambouka which you had to drink in one go, the walk back to the Romanza took a lot longer than usual as a result!

Well, as one first time visitor to San Stef remarked to us today...it's been 4 seasons in 1 day!
The morning started off quite bright, and warmer than yesterday.  :)
Lunchtime/early afternoon saw thunder, lightening, and amazingly heavy rain.  :o
After this the sky cleared, the sun came out, and it was lovely.  8)
Followed by unfortunately more rain tonight, and a drop in temperature  :(

Hopefully the weather will improve soon. In the meantime nearly all shops are now open, so lots of nice things to browse at when the weathers not at its best.
As you work your way round the village there is the olive wood shop on the road in from Arillas, then on towards the beach where you'll find Vasia, Terezas, Pele & Maria, and Taste of Life gift shops, before you reach Crystal Daisy gifts, and Perdita Glass by the beach.
Come along past Thomas Bay, and you have a choice of Elizabeth jewellery and bags, Hippopots ceramics, more jewellery at Sparkles, next to Glass slipper gifts. Include the 4 supermarkets, and theres plenty of shopping to keep you occupied on the not so beachy days

Went to Kassipoi for lunch yesterday and it was bright and warm with not a drop of rain, got back to the Romanza which had been lashed by a hail storm at lunchtime, crazy weather!

Had a drive down the new bypass yesterday which was great, it's open 'unofficially' so all the locals are using if. The road is a bit rough in the middle but even there it's better than most of the other local roads!

Today is opening day for many in the village and the sun is out to celebrate after yesterday's thunderstorms, the Mistral is blowing so it's cool but at least it's sunny.

Gavlah - Young Costa wasnt working at Romanza last year, he was working at Havana bar. His place at Romanza was taken by Spiros, Andreas sisters fiance. Dimitri was still working there last year though, dont know about this year.

I will find out.

It was a bit busier last night with about 12 covers at the Little Prince but after the rain yesterday the evening was very cold with lightning flashing across the sky and I am sure at one stage I saw a few snow flakes ;D

El Greco was still open at 1am with a few locals in, El Greco is now very prominent in SanStef and some real competition for Bar 38 and the Condor.

More people arriving on Monday and all the talk is of a bumper season and sold out apartments and hotels.

Prices are the same as last year and last night with paid just 32euro for two starters two mains a litre of wine and two soft drinks, 32e is about £26 which is remarkable value.

Talking to Vassillis at the Romanza yesterday and the big complaint is the ever increasing taxes from the Greek Government and that businesses are trying to absorb these cost rather than put up prices. I think local businesses could put up prices by 5% - 10% without it affecting trade but the locals are afraid to do that.

So it's cracking value from our perspective and as long as the pound stays around 1.2 the good times will continue for UK visitors.

Weather is a bit brighter today but it will be tomorrow before we see any real improvement.

Arrived in San Steph yesterday on the first Thomson plane of the season having booked a very cheap last minute holiday.

Staying at the Romanza is which is superb as usual and made all the brighter as Vasillis from Zorbes is now working behind the bar.

Weather was sunny and warm when we arrived but today it's cloudy and wet as some weather fronts go through, forecast however is better with warm and dry weather from Monday.

Last night San Steph was very quiet with many Tavernas still closed, we ate at the Little Prince with about 6 other couples and all the bars were closed by midnight so a night cap was had at the Romanza.

As Hippopots said all the locals are busy cleaning and painting to be ready by Monday when the next influx of visitors arrive. Some changes to note, both the old Chinese and the premises next door are being painted so something must be opening in both. El Greco bar has been expanded into the old gift shop which is now located opposite the Little Prince, El Greco is looking very smart with a new outdoor bar area which will be nice on a summers evening.

Manthos was open last night and a new bar is opening above the Mistral Taverna nearby so that end of town is getting busier.

Now the beach and oh dear what a mess, it has suffered serious erosion near Manthos and is only 6 feet wide in places, I couldn't believe how much of the beach has vanished near Waves as well. The beach near the Havana hasn't been as badly affected and is similar to last year. Two diggers were on the beach moving sand from the flower bed area in front of the Athina onto the beach to make it an easier slope. Outside the Mango Bar the beach is a disaster and will require some work to get it ready for sunbeds.

Talking to Dimitris in the LP last night he is expecting a very busy season as bookings are well up on last year so hopefully it will be a prosperous year for visitors and locals alike in season 2014.

Will post more reports as the opening up continues.
