San Stefanos news and views / Re: Beach - a hypothesis
« on: December 06, 2015, 01:44:12 AM »
I think as do some of the locals that the severe erosion of this section of the beach was due to the placement of many large stones in front of the Delphino Blue.

These stones distorted the water and tidal current during winter storms and 'back washed' the sand out to sea where it now sits in long ridges 30 meters out.

However this erosion is part of a larger scale shrinkage of the beach over the last few years which I think has been due to a succession of stormy winters in Corfu.

I have photos of the beach from my first visit in 2008 and it was massive, but when you check the weather records for Corfu between 2000 and 2008 you will find a long series of calm winters with few winter storms, however, winter 2009 was stormy and 2010 and 2011 even stormier as deep low pressure systems crossed Greece during the winter months. The recent winters 2012 to 2015 have seen further stormy winter spells although not as bad as those between 2009-2011.

We need a return of those calmer drier winters in Corfu to restore the beach and with high pressure now extended across the Eastern Mediterranean this winter could be the start of a beach revival.

Was in San Steph last week and with the exchange rate it is now very cheap, 3 course special at Little Prince works out at £6.65 and £3 for a half litre of wine!

Booked on the 05.55 from Gatwick tomorrow staying 3 nights in Corfu Town, so will be popping over to San Steph for a look around, first proper holiday booked in May.....can't wait!

Great to hear that the Athina has reopened the pool bar, will greatly enhance the pool area which is still one of our favourites, hopefully they will still have the 5 euro per day rule this summer to keep the freeloaders out.

Jimbo,

Four tips for a happy holiday in San Steph.

Book accommodation with Lesley or Noula
Book flight with Easyjet, Jet2 or Monarch
Book hire car from airport with Corfu Value Plus

And tell the Thompson Gestapo to stick their package where the sun isn't shinning!

Ryan Air, have booked with them for the first time in July and dreading it, are they really that bad? Thing is their flight times and prices are brilliant so had to give them a go. How bad can it be? Andy

Sounds ok till you do a bit of a rough calculation. If every room was full with maximum occupancy for the whole holiday period it would generate approx €74.000 . Divide that into say €400.000 it would be at least 5 years to recoup the money.thats without any other costs and not taking a wage....leave well alone...

And of course you would be lucky to achieve 70% occupancy rate and have all bills to pay on top. Would be a great business as a lifestyle choice but don't expect to get your money back within 10 years! Andy

Anything is better than an empty shop front and if they sell decent beer and have WiFi they will get my custom! Good luck to Spiros and the team. Andy

San Stefanos news and views / New Easyjet Flight To Corfu from Newcastle!
« on: December 11, 2014, 06:39:50 AM »
Easyjet have just announced they are flying to Corfu from Newcastle from summer 2015!

Just checked and the prices are cheap and the flight times excellent, departing on Sundays at 06:00. I am just annoyed that I have already booked the inflated prices from Manchester for September and would have saved £70 flying from Newcastle which is my closest airport!!

Oh well at least it's an option for 2016 I just wish Easyjet had announced it earlier.

Message to winter locals, any sign of work starting yet to renovate the hotel?

It will be great to see it restored to its former glory.

Dear me Jimbo 3 hours is crazy, that's as long as it takes to fly back to the UK!

Don't hold your breath to hear from Thomson, these people only want positive comments and are not interested in genuine concerns or when things go wrong.

How different to Holiday Extras who I complained to in September, I heard back within 2 days and had my money back with future booking discounts within two weeks, I was gobsmacked!

Another 2 glorious hot and sunny days.

Didn't do a write up for yesterday as we had a day off ourselves, and felt like we were on Holiday too!

We walked over the headland to have a frappe with a friend in Arillas, then after leaving a warm doggy at the shop for a snooze we chose Mistral for lunch, where we could idle away the time watching people enjoying the beach and the sea.
Then, in the evening we had a lovely meal at Beachcombers, where Sue is chosing to stay open for a little longer, to give people another option fo dinner....and she had quite a few people in so hopefully it's going to be worth it for them.

The village really is on wind down now, with only Beachcombers, Summer Dreams, Quattro, Town Pizza and Yiannis Gyros open for dinner, other than Nafsika, Thomas Bay, and Athina. Although there are still people here, virtually all are staying half board, so its very hard for the restaurnts to keep going.
Gift shops are still open, but I expect will call it a day soon.....we will finish on Wednesday, before returning to the UK Friday.
So, there will be a couple more posts, then I'll do periodic ones during winter, to keep everyone going until next year! ;D

Wil you be spending most of winter in the UK or San Stef?

I know where I would rather be!

The best hotel in Corfu Town has to be the Corfu Palace Hotel situated on Garista Bay just half a mile from town centre.

Every room has a superb sea view and the pool and gardens are lovely, again it isn't cheap in fact it's dearer than the Corfu Mare but it's an experience as well as a place to stay.

San Stefanos news and views / The Ghost Hotel**Sold**!
« on: October 02, 2014, 10:49:47 AM »
I have been told by several local people in SS that the yellow Ghost hotel on the hill behind SS has been sold to a wealthy Greek Hotel tycoon for 500,000 euros.

The new owner plans to spend over 1m euros turning it into a 5 star Hotel resort.

This is great news for SS and will bring even more people into the village and while many of those will spend much time in the hotel they will inevitably go to the Taverna,s, shops and beach etc. It may well be 'all inclusive' but I don't think that will matter as it will be an upmarket hotel and just a larger version of the Delphino Blue.

The hotel was really becoming a blot on the landscape of SS so it's great that it is going to be developed, I am amazed someone has taken it on because it's in a really terrible state.

Imagine that within a year or two the entrance to the hotel opposite Aspro Supermarket will be will lead up through well managed gardens and palm trees just as it did 10 years ago.

Remarkable deep blue sky above San Steph today with the air having the crystal clear clarity you only get in autumn, temperature about 25c in the afternoon so warm enough for most people with just a light breeze.

Friday onwards does not look as good with more cloud about but you can't complain. What I have noticed this September/October is how green Corfu is compared with most years, the landscape is more like early May than September and of course this is down to the frequent spells of heavy rain earlier in the month.

The green countryside combined with the blue sky and bright sun has given the island a beauty that painters and poets would love, superb.
