San Stefanos news and views / Re: Nasty habits
« on: August 17, 2009, 10:01:01 PM »
As a life long non-smoker I feel I can comment on this issue with some balance.

I have never smoked and never will but I can not understand the obsession some folk have about the smoke that 'sometimes' drifts across their table, I wonder if the anti-smokers objects as much to the fumes pumped out by cars and buses which to be honest I find far more unpleasant?

Smoking is an established part of Greek Culture and I would hate the Greeks to become the the obsessive anti smokers that the British have become, I like nothing more than the friendly Greek waiter taking my order with a fag in one hand and a pen in the other! Thats when I know I am in Greece and away from the 'Politically Correct' world of Nanny State Britain.

The anti-smoking attitude of many Brits tells us a lot about the anxious, neurotic and selfish nation we have become, the Greek smokers remind me of the people we used to be when common sense prevailed over intolerance.

San Stefanos news and views / Quad Bikes & Travel Insurance
« on: July 20, 2009, 10:59:09 PM »
I know from reading posts on here that many people like hiring the quad bikes available in San Steph.

I have always wanted to hire one but have been put off by tales of people having accidents and not being insured because they were on a bike.

Does anyone know if your travel insurance policy will cover you on a quad bike, I have checked mine and it isnt really mentioned although the hiring of a moped would seem to invalidate the insurance.

I hate all the UK health & safety nonsense but dont fancy an air ambulance bill getting home following a skermish with a Greek driver on the wrong side of the road!

No one wants to spoil the beautiful sunset at S S!!
Not with that rubbish anyway.
I took a photo of it last week, are you sure it's in relation to a wind farm as it looks like a radio or telephone mast.
It is next to the shrine on the headland, (not a church), but even that is an eyesore in itself!!

Hi Tony,

Sorry mate but its an anemometer mast.

You will have noticed that it has 3 spinning anemometers on the mast designed to measure wind speed at various heights, a TV or radio mast will only have one on the top.

Its purpose was confirmed to me by a S.S. Taverna owner and we can only hope it all comes to nothing, however, I know from bitter experience that power companies dont go to the expense of putting up these masts unless they are serious about it.

The problem is that SS is probably the windiest part of Corfu which makes it a natural target for wind farm development.

Dont even get me started on the folly of wind farms and the destrutive effect they have on the landscape >:(

No contest!

The Little Prince is the best Taverna in San Steph.

Great food and fantastic atmosphere, IMO the Mythica is mediocre in every respect.

San Stefanos news and views / A New View From The Beach at San Steph
« on: July 18, 2009, 10:31:48 PM »
Those who enjoy the coastal walk from San Steph to Arrilas may have noticed the anenomter mask next to the church on the headland.

On seeing this I was immidiately dismayed as I knew at once what it meant and following some detective work I have found out that a power company want to build an offshore wind farm near San Steph.

Now some people dont mind the sight of these 400foot high structures but am I the only one that would not like to look at them from my lunch table at the Mango Bar?

These damn Wind farms are being planned all over Europe and the photo below will give you some idea of the view from Arrilas and San Steph in a few years time if the power companies have their way.

http://www.photographersdirect.com/stockimages/o/offshore_wind_farm.asp

(Copy and paste)

I have spoken to a few Taverna owners and it seems local opposition is mounting mostly from fisherman concerned about the effect on local fish stocks.

We can only hope they are successful in their opposition.

Where to stay / Re: Mythos apartments part 2

Let me try again!!  ;)

The apartments that look like mini houses have a balcony leading from the bedroom upstairs.
The apartments that have the two strange little windows do not have a balcony. Infact, they are just one big room, kitchen / diner / bathroom and bed in the same room.

If I was you, I'd ensure that you get one of the "little houses".....  8)

Thanks Belgianram,

Thats made my wife's evening!

San Stefanos news and views / Andy 7: Latest San Steph Holiday Report
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:21:11 PM »
Have been back just 48 hours now and already the recent two weeks holiday in San Steph seems just a memory, so before I forget altogether I thought I would post my thoughts.

This was our 3rd holiday to San Steph in less than a year so it had a lot to live up to, so were we in anyway disappointed......NO!

Mike the waiter at the Little Prince summed it up when he greeted us on our first night and said "Welcome Home", that's how it feels going back to San Steph, the people treat you like long lost friends.

Anyway, we stayed at the Teresa's which was again very good, Leo and family were excellent and the Greek night was again brilliant, the bar terrace and pool area has had a face lift and looks smart.

San Steph itself also has a fresh look about it with the new Italian Restaurant filling a gap on the main street, the Mythica occupying the new unit opposite Yannis and Bar Code a smart new bar near San Steph Travel.

The beach had been damaged and 'shrunk' by recent storms but was back to normal after the first week, the sea doing a remarkable job in repairing both the beach and off shore sand banks, which help to create the lovely warm shallow water.

We spent our days either at the Athina Pool or on the beach, we had many lunches at the Mango Bar which had a surprisingly cheap menu and the food was excellent, served up by a cheerful waiter who sung along (rather badly) to British pop songs. The Mango had a great holiday feel to it and I could spend hours there drinking coffee and reading the 'Daily Mail' (sorry Zimmer!).

We hired a car and visied Agios Georges South which was a nice flat resort with friendly people (why are the Corfu people so friendly where ever you go)? We also visited Afonas and Agios Georges North, this is a stunning area with a remarkable walk from the headland Taverna down to the double Afonas Beach, the track is about a mile each way across a rough surface and we had to turn back before we could reach the beach as the wife had flip flops on! If you do this walk wear trainers at least and take plenty of water, the sun heats the rock face to a furnace.

Most evenings we spent at the Little Prince and as usual was always the last to leave! We did try the Mythica but it's not for us and after the Teresas Greek night we stuck with the Little Prince as the food and atmosphere is the best in San Steph, even after 12 nights there was things on the menu we hadn't tried but I could eat a Saganaki starter and Bom Bom Lamb main course till Christmas and still not be sick of it.

The house white wine was again excellent and we proudly exhausted their supply one night! Fresh supplies were quickly obtained the following day.

After the storms of late June the weather was hot and sunny for our fortnight although a strong wind kept us off the beach for the last few days and even the Athina Pool area became too cold one afternoon despite the thermometer registering 27c.

So all in all another great holiday to San Steph, we found places we hadn't been to before and combined this with the familiar San Steph to provide the perfect break.

Yes, if you have a split level apartment (as we did), you have a lovely terrace from the bedroom.
If you're in apartment 3, be kind to it as I class it as mine now!!!  :D

Thanks Belgianram,

However, I am still a bit confused, do the split level apartments have a Balcony from the upstairs bedroom?

Last week we spent ages outside the Mythos trying to work out whether the split level apartments were the ones with a first floor balcony or the ones with the curved roof and little upper windows, I think the owner thought we planning to rob the place we were staring at it so long!

I know it sounds daft but the wife loves a balcony rather than a ground floor terrace, not that she is fussy of course!!

Cheers,

Andy

They sound great!!

We are booked to go in September. We have a split level apartment - are these with a balcony or are they the low ones in the middle with the windows above?

Pleased to hear about the towels. Where we were staying last week we only got the towels changed once in the whole fortnight. Had to wash them ourselves in the shower!!

They are in a lovely location. Not too far from the centre to walk, but lovely and quiet through the day.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: The Zimmer Newbie Review
« on: July 14, 2009, 09:24:04 PM »
matter of relative and subjective perception I suppose.Half a dozen bars + several hotels/tavernas within a pretty short space seems pretty busy and vibrant, to me,and not my definition of a "sleepy resort" - I was there you know :) ;) but if you consider that quiet then , fine...you could always go up to Tasty Corner [ nice owner btw] or Barcode for some more ;D...oh and theres Acabar and Three W too so, for relative size - because there are only two streets in SS,compared to about 10 in Sidari, it does seem going down the Sidari route, but thats just how I see it, others might think there werent enough  :o  for instance there were people at the RG who stayed out until past two 02.00. For myself I could have done with half a dozen less bars and Tavernas and more local craft/deli type places.

Hi Zimmer,

You have a point but its not just the number of bars that matter (Parga has loads and you cant say thats British!) but the type of bars and the people that visit them.

In 4 weeks in San Steph I have only seen one case of someone being visibly drunk, I doubt whether that would be the case in Sidari.

Hi Zimmer,

I enjoyed reading your review as it always pays to question your own perception.

We get a lot of stick from friends and family because we keep on going to San Steph and the reasons they give are similar to those in your post, however, we still think San Steph in many ways is unique.

We have been to most of the Greek Islands and enjoyed them all but we find many are not as welcoming as they used to be and many lack any Greek Culture at all, but SS its not all Zorbes type music. O Manthos has a brilliant greek night on a Saturday with traditional dancers, we also found live Bazookie music on in the Athens bar - which is much better than the endless Duran Duran we had to listen to on a recent visit to Rhodes!

Rhodes Town or Chania in Crete are often held up as 'real' and 'cultural' Greece but we found both of them aggressively commercialised and as a previous poster said the restaurant owners would drag you off the street and one even became unpleasant when we refused.

You just wouldnt get that in SS.

As you say SS on its own can run out of things to do but Corfu is a wonderful Island and it will take years to explore it all, we always get a car as an alternative to the pool/beach.

So it horses for courses but our next holiday to SS (combined with a week in Paxos) is already in the bag.

Hi Zimmer,

Very interesting read although I have to disagree with your overall summary.

You can find restaurants like Mythica and Ozzy Oils anywhere, particularly Mythica which we found pretentious and dull, it was like eating in a Library

Surely we go to Greece to experience 'Greek' Tavernas rather than places that are trying to copy (usually unsuccessfully) trendy British establishments.

Scala in Kefallonia has been taken over by places like the Mythica most with names more suited to a 1980's New Romantic pop group! I and many others do not want to see this trend develop in SS but in the long run restaurant owners will give people what they want so we will see.

Our favourite Taverna was the Little Prince and yes it has many return customers but doesnt that tell us something?

I wouldnt worry too much about next weeks weather, yes it will not be as settled as recently but thunderstorms tend to be shortlived and the sun will shine in between with temperatures reaching about 26c.

Its not like the UK where it rains for hours or days on end!

Also, San Steph is a drier part of Corfu and when we were there in September San Steph was often sunny while other parts of the Island had storms and heavy rain, on one day we were sunning ourselves at the Rose Garden while Sidari had thunder and hail storms.
