San Stefanos news and views / Re: transfers
« on: June 12, 2010, 01:03:42 PM »
This year's transfer up to the Little Prince was under an hour and down just on the hour. They seem to have changed the way they do things following some problems last year.

It was definitely open when we were in Arillas the other day.

The beach was looking much better again on Thursday. It really tooking a battering on Tuesday 1st June as although very bright and sunny, it was blowing a gale. I took some photos across the beach towards the port and all you can see is white breakers battering in and the spray was breaking quite high over the old harbour. I hadn't seen it like this or anywhere near it in our previos two visits.

SS travel exchange rate was 1.18 on Thursday

Forecast for this week now v. good with temperatures up to the early 30s Thurs/Fri.

Lilolil, we went to the harbour to catch the local ferry, sails on Mons, Weds and Sats and you can go to Mathraki or Othoni. As I said, 6 euros pp each way to Othoni, just over three hours on the island. You'll get longer on Mathraki, guessing the fare would be around 4 euros each way. SS travel has a new trip taking in both islands, 28 euros pp.

Resort was quite lively last week, being half term but doesn't look too bad this week so far. Little Prince has been busy both accommodation and the restaurant. Kerry at Ozzy Oils said the place had been quiet in May but she was happy with business so far. Sue at the Beachcomber also reported a quiet May. Zorbas seems much quiter than usual and the Pizza place next door seems really quiet. Mythica has been fairly busy but was empty at eight o'clock on Friday evening, Little Prince packed when we went to eat.

Olive Press has not opened and doesn't show much sign of doing so.

Finally, the new shop next to the juice bar has just opened. Has lots of Olive Oil products inc. cosmetics, Ouzo, Kumquat etc., novelty candles and so on. Prices for cosmetics as per Corfu Town. It is a nice looking shop though.

Weather on Saturday started with a thunderstorn with v. heavy rain at 06:00 and was very mixed all day. Sunday is already very warm and locals say forecast for this week is v. good.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Supermarket prices
« on: June 06, 2010, 12:01:25 PM »
Prices in the supermarkets have generally risen quite a bit from last year, cereals, dairy products etc. are pretty expensive. Buy your suntan lotion, after sun. toiletries etc before you go.

Suntan lotion is at least 50% more than at home and can be even more expensive in the tourist shops.

Bread from the local bakery is 80 cents for a loaf, I think about the same as last year. The good news is that restaurant prices have not moved much yet, although breakfast are now around 4.50-5.00 Euros in San Stef, up about a euro from last year.

Hope this helps.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Beechcomber/waves

Ate at the Beachcomber on Sunday night. Food fantastic as ever, sat outside on the terrace, not a spectacular sunset as a bit overcast. We both had the Pork with pears. The medallions were beautifully cooked and the cooked pears worked really well with it. Prices are a little above most of the village but still v. reasonable for the quality of food and the location. You really must give it a go.

We arrived on the 28th, good flight from Glasgow, got in 15 mins early but time then wasted waiting fro someone who had decided not to take the coach but didn't tell anyone. However straight to San Stef and in the Little Prince in an hour.

Prices as everyone has said a little up on last year but still good value. Large draught Mythos generally 2.50. Sizzling steak at Little Prince 8 euros great value. Set menus, one course plus wine usually 7 euros, three courses 9 euros. VAT is going up agin soon though. Ate at the Beachcomber on Sunday night, still superb. Ozzy oils booked for Wednesday(BBQs are Tues nights)

Took the local ferry to Othoni yesterday, 6 euros pp each way, just over three hours on the island. Stops at Mathraki on the way, fare presumably 3-4 euros. Much cheaper than the local excursions. Othoni is beautiful.

Car hired for three days from SS travel, 80 euros all inc for a Matiz.

Weather sunny on Friday 26C, Saturday/Sunday/Monday mainly cloudy but 25-28C, very wet and windy overnight last night but sunny(still v. windy) today and around 23C. Haven't seen the sea as rough on previous visits.

That's it for now will update around the weekend, really enjoying being back.

We were across this fortnight last year and the village was very quiet. I got the impression that a lot of the locals felt it was quieter than 2008. Hope this trend doesn't continue and that San Stef has good season. Anyway, well be there a week on Friday, the Icelandic god of fire permitting!! Will report back from San Stef :)

Been over last to Ericousa island on a boat trip through Noula at San Stef travel, lovely trip and island. We will do the two island trip to Mathraki and Ericousa this year, again with San Stef travel. They also do a boat trip down to Paleokastritsa which we did three years ago. Also a nice trip. San Stef can also organise car hire at reasonable rates if you fancy it Driving can be interesting but you soon get used to the roads!(Also Arillas car hire and SanStefanos car hire in the village are good)

San Stef travel also do shopping trips to Corfu(well worth a visit) or you take the local bus(nice experience but the Bus Station in the Town is a bit of a scrum. The Albanian trip was also good but is long day.

The bottom line is, don't be tempted to book through the reps, you'll save quite a bit on trips and car hire locally.

You'll be well looked after in The Little Prince. We're making our third visit on the 28th of May. If you only need a car for a couple of days, you'll get as good a deal from Noula at San Stef travel as from anywhere else and the office is only a few steps from The Little Prince. Noula also does a good range of excursions at prices much below the tour companies.

Enjoy and make sure you sample the sizzling steak at The Little Prince

There are also a few additional journeys between Sidari and Kassiopi only, or are least there were last year. I guess these will connect with buses from Kassiopi to Corfu Town but being Greece, maybe not :). I haven't got times for these but you should be able to pick them up from the above links. As others have said, use these as a guide until you there and then check locally as times do change and there are additional journeys from some places as the season progresses.

Most stops did seem to have up-to-date info on them when we were there in May last year and on a journey back from Corfu Town, the conductor was changing them. Hope this helps.

Can echo Tony's comment about the Baechcomber. Great food in a beautiful setting. Do give up the Thomas Bay one night as you are on honeymoon and the Beachcomber will provide a special night out. Make sure you're there for the sunset!

Have a great time, Gordon

We have not done the Paxos trip as we did Albania instead. We enjoyed it but it is not necessarily to everyone's taste. Have spoken to people who have done the Paxos trip and all seemed to have enjoyed it but it is a long day(as was Albania)

Did Erikousa island only with SS travel last year and it was a really nice trip and a lovely island too. Intend to do the Mathraki and Erikousa trip this year. The Paleocatritsa trip by boat(also from SS travel) is also a lovely trip. Paleo itself is in a lovely setting.
