I am due to fly in 8 weeks and have put off buying any euros because of the pitiful rate. Could anyone getting any please give us the heads up as to the rate and from whom. I thank you.
-
We have just got 1.085 to £1.0 at the local post office. This was dependant on changing over £500. It is a lot better than what we got at Xmas and the same as back in november. It is though still pitiful.

Well - it is moving slowly up!
Who would have thought that the UK would have such a bad dive, Swedebasher - you have 8 weeks to hope for a big upturn,
either Super-Gord will make it work - or we are in for a real rough time!!
-
May be worth waiting to see what the first visitors get in the village as well as that can sometimes be the best bet. :)
-
Travelex - 1.0865
Ice - 1.09
Moneysupermarket -1.0769
Post Office -1.0834
Tesco - 1.0833
These are ones I have just looked up on the internet and there is not really much betwen them at moment but always best to go for commission free ones.
-
There appears to be no better in SS these days as you pay commission and that wipes out any trifling rate improvement you get above the UK.
TC1 please wash your mouth out with carbolic, lowering the tone(cough) by mentioning the blasted G word. Emigration anyone??

I was being very facitious and tongue in cheek - I cannot abide the man who has cost us all dearly and is the only one who can't see it!!
I won't say any more as this is not for politics, but we think alike!!
-
Would you please refrain from slagging off my BOSS! He may be useless, he may be a bore but he's still my BOSS! I have a duty to run him down, I'm underpaid enough to earn that right!

Saw 1.04 at the Post Office this Morning so can only assume it may be better elsewhere as they don't always have the best rate.If I remember last year all the supermarkets did currency as well and they were quiet good. :)

Its a difficult one to call Tony - just glad we never cash in what we bring back each year - softens the blow a tiny bit.

I have just been looking at there site https://www.crowncurrencyexchange.com/content/euros.asp
So it seems they give a rate for different times of ordering . So for example can I order for my holiday in August now and get the 1.12 rate now?

Another good site I have found is for a company based at Hayle, Cornwall. www.fairfx.com. If you have one of their 'Cut out the middle man' cards you can get .1.08 right now, with 1.06 if you pay by debit card.

The best thing about the uro is that we have a drawer full from previous years when we were getting anything up to 1.40. Not planned but at least we have a good start.

Good site Jules. Just got a delivery from Crown yesterday. Ordered about 10 days earlier and arrived on the agreed date. Got 1.12/£1 no commision. Every little bit helps. Just a small point, phone or internet banking required.
Plane tickets arrived on Saturday so holiday is now becoming a reality. Yaaaay!!!!
So at the moment I think Postman Pat is wonderful, doesn't only deliver bills!! LOL. Yammas.

Hi Tony, you and quite a few others on the forum will remember the really good days of the Drachma. When it was harder to spend your money than to make it last the whole holiday!
Try telling that to the kids of today. Oh happy days.

First visit to Corfu was to Roda about 30years ago. First time I tasted ouzo. As you say, VERY large measures! Memories of that night a bit (very) hazy! LOL!!
First visit to SS in 2001 and have been back every year since and all being well in the future. It's just sooooo addictive! Have to keep getting my fix.
Pound moved up a touch today but a long way to go.

I remember prices being in drachmae and leptas. Only in shops though,it was rounded (usually) down. Mind you, the leptas were horrible little things.

Tony, never buy currency from Travelex at any British airport; worst exchange rates bar none, unless your wife gets it at a non-tourist rate! Travelex online is a different matter - one of the most competitive. ICE (International Currency Exchange) and Post Office online also competitive and all commission free.
-
just phoned to inform credit card firm we will be in corfu just in case we need to use it and told there are 2 charges adding up to just under 6% good job we always take cash so best if you check the rate with your bank to see the rate you will be charged seems thats how they are trying to claw the money back they lost

Ok - funnily enough she has to travel to Bristol Airport to set up mystery shoppers for it, on Friday.
She will then fly to Scotland to sort out another Airport and return to heathrow,
so I'll get her to check out the exchange rates at travelex boothes against the post office etc.
But from my experience, we always got a better rate in Corfu!
-
tell linda i can be her mystery shopper its the thing i do best shame its not the 5th june we could have seen her up there the duty free will be my first port of call (perfume)
-
Pound still making a comeback against the euro - up a cent today. Hopefully the BoE won't say anything to knock it down in the next 2 weeks and then it'll be NW flexaccount card in the hole in the wall.
Every little helps.

Maybe you can!! You shop and get paid for it!!
She hires part-time mystery shoppers - to do all the Duty free shops and associates in most airports,
even our daughter does it 12 hours a week inc. doing the reports!!

If it does at least it will be better than last year when we got about 1.20. If the prices have stayed relatively the same in the village it won't be so bad after all.

If it does at least it will be better than last year when we got about 1.20. If the prices have stayed relatively the same in the village it won't be so bad after all.
The word on tv is it will be about a month to get there!
-
A friend of mine has read today that the euro might peak in the next few weeks at 1.25. If it does we will buy then.

Just in time for you Tony if you haven't already got them by then.

Paper talk. Prob the Daily Express. They usually have headlines like "Pound soars"....but in reality goes up about 0.5cents against £. In winter "Blizzards for whole of winter". Forget it.
Pound/euro will stay around 1.11 for next month or so. Don't ever believe "i've just read...." No one knows; just like no analyst predicted financial meltdown last year.

No - I will go with the flow and buy last minute as usual!!
-
We usually buy about a week before but this year might have to be different if the rate does go up to 1.25.

I will remain pesermistic - then happy if/when it goes up!
-
Aaaargh...thanks to McBroon and all the infighting with the damned incompetent labour party, the pound has dropped like a stone against the euro. Lost 1.25 euros on Thursday alone :(
-
Pound still making a comeback against the euro - up a cent today. Hopefully the BoE won't say anything to knock it down in the next 2 weeks and then it'll be NW flexaccount card in the hole in the wall.
Every little helps.
On Crown at the moment for when we go its 1.17. Will see if it goes a bit better and then buy some.
I expect theres a bloke down the pub who sells euro's for half price, same serial no. though - LOL
And of course Gordon is printing loads-a-money, maybe theres some spare!!
Great to see Gordon's got Browned off with politics, given it up, and returned to plastering!!!!!!

A week ago today i wrote this. anyone going in next month should've got euros in last week. C'mon all, i reckon most of you are my age or older! Labour in power normally equals economic crisis at some point! Crisis normally means 'run on the £'!

Labour is getting to be a dirty word these days! Especially when it costs us so much!!
I won't worry about the exchange rate, unless it goes up to around 1.30 again - it's simply going to be expensive this year!!

Yes Sir, we spent an extra £100 in May doing the same as we did in 2008. Bristle Boy hits nail on head, yes every labour 'government' leaves a monumental financial crisis, and the longer these clowns hang on the worse it will get. Shame, we deserve better.

No class war in our house. If he can sort the nation's finances out (prob take 2 terms, at least) that'll be just fine.
On topic....if the cash machine isn't working at thomas bay i presume we're stuffed for more euros, unless we leave village. Are there any exchange places in SS? reckon exchange rate will hover around 1.10/£ for a couple of weeks at least.

Not sure about using cards to get money from local shops or hotels etc - only cash machines. Next nearest one is Arillas or Avliotes Village depending if you want to walk there or not. Certainly the SS one sounds as unreliable as it was last year.

I suppose as well with the exchange rate being rubbish the last thing you want to be doing is having to pay to cash your cheques as well.

Same here as well. Did take cheques for the first few years but then as you get to know the place you realise you don't really need to.
