Title: Mosquitos
Post by: Kernowfox on July 11, 2009, 04:29:38 PM
Just returned from 2 fantastic weeks at San Stefanos. Just some feedback onh the mozzy issue. Last year in Kos we both got badly bitten -  we were using the non deet sprays and roll ons. This year in San Stef there were plenty of mozzies around but neither of us had one bite ! - We used 50 % deet spray and had no reaction to it. It costs a bit more but it certainly did the trcik for us. You can buy the Jungle remedy 50% deet in Arta supermarket for 13 Euros. Its about half the price in the uk. It is also possible that the lower percentage concentrates of deet (you can buy 20% , 30% etc) may be just as good.

hi Kernowfox
the worst place i have ever been to be bitten by mozzies was Kos, i had over 100 bites and nearly ended up in the hospital, i have a really bad reaction to them. Big blisters
last 2 years in San Stef only had 2 then 3, and they were on the last night, i started using boots soltan sun lotion and after sun both with insect repellent in them. They work for me and i don't buy sprays any more
Different things work for different people, i just stick to what works for me along with anti histamin
Hope you had  a good holiday
Helen

Its about half the price in the uk.

Are you saying it is cheaper in the UK or in SS???

good point ! - It is cheaper in the uk. Its been a real bonus not having any bites at all! My wife reckons she saw mozzies flying away from us.
It really did work. We got through 2 aerosol cans and one roll on. UK cost £15 total. Bought one in Arta supermarket next to the last day as we worried we would run out. We sprayed lower legs, arms , back of neck. Best £15 we ever spent.

Hello all

Just returned from a blissful week in San Stefanos and only one mosquito bite ( through my own carelessness.) First night used jungle formula apart from left lower leg on which I applied Avon Skin so Soft (Woodland Fresh). The dry oil spray is absorbed really quickly and I did reapply once round the ankles during our evenings out. Perhaps not a fragrance I would otherwise use but I tend to avoid perfumes there anyway as they seem to attract insects.  Plenty of mozzies about and my husband and one son got a dozen between them - usually they get none at all if I am there. Also noticed quite a lot of people with bites. I know plenty of products have been talked about and that people will quite reasonably stick with what they trust but this little experimental trial on one person may be of some use if anyone`s thinking of this particular spray.

Glad we have subjects like this as it has reminded me I have not bought our Mossie repelents yet . We always swear by Jungle Formula liquid plug ins and the roll on for our legs and arms. We always leave the plug ins switched on 24/7 as well.

One on back of ankle on third night. One on hand typical after all the precautions I go and was my hands.  Had tablets and liquid in room. Citronella candles on balcony. Used anti-mosquito band. Used Asda after sun with insect repellent. Tried to eat Garlic. Sandra was like the Uk in the Eurovision Song Contest.. Nil, Non.. Zero (Bites) Points.

Whoo!! Just back from 'over the hill' today, and I can say despite taking every precaution, I have NEVER had so many bites. damn things blow up so big and I have had to resort to putting on antihistamine cream. Despite all the so called remedies one poor chap I saw in the Armourada had 20 bites on his legs. Blasted things.

Trouble is mate - the word buzzed out - that you were as tasty as a piece of fillet steak!! LOL
Hope you heal fast - don't be tempted to scratch the bites!!
Just for the record - I have never been bitten in Corfu by a mozzie, in 27 years!! (Makes you sick!!) LOL

When we were out in the 2nd half of June we got bitten on a number of occasions and i hadn't been bitten for a number of years in the Med. Found it a real problem in San Stef, but when we bought the cintrenella during our 2nd week (on recommendation) it seemed to keep the blighters away.

Just returned from Carvoeiro on The Algarve (annual jaunt for us for last 8 years) this week and we didn't see a single mosquito, let alone get bitten by one!

I can never understand why I don't get bitten, everyone else has at some stage - but never very much!
My daughter-in-law got badly bitten one evening and they all went to blisters!!

Bizarre this...due to a near bereavement the local vicar came to see me yesterday and noted my illuminous legs (Thank you mozzies) and stated that he found that wet wipes- the things for wiping your, er, a**e with were very good for calming mozzie bite irritation. I did it and had a peaceful night. So there you have it an answer of the divine sort!!

That's a useful bit of info!!!! In the same vein my GP suggested Anusol for a shoulder soft tissue problem. It too worked.

I got only one bite this year (none last year) and Roy as normal didn't get one bite. He puts it down to the marmite he eats although we do use Jungle Formula as well. I always take antihistamine tables with us just in case as well to calm down any itching.

I have had a hard time with mozzies over the years. I was close to being in hospital in Turkey one year, and it made me think about giving up foreign hols. What works for me now is Mosquito Milk which is a roll-on with a pleasant slight fresh lemon smell, you can get it here;

http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/mosquito-milk_1_6505.html?gclid=CJHi6rTHrp0CFWAB4wodUgjBiA.

I have been to San Stef 3 years running and got 3 bites, 2 on occasions I forgot to put it on. I know it's different strokes for different folks when it comes to mozzies, but it is well worth a try.

I would agree Jules!, coincidently, we have stayed 5 times at the Thomas Bay, once at the Athina, and the other 30 times over 27 years was in various Apartments, too many to name them all!

Just found this on an E-Mail. Not a prevention.... But if the worst happens!

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Don't think it'd work on unsightly swellings like that though ! LOL
