These are layers of bricks set into the cliff face just before you get to the private beach hut and not a building.    They seemed even more prominent this year, where the cliff has eroded some more I suppose.

Just booked package holiday (Thomsons) for Gran Canaria for October, today and they stressed that we must input the API.  You can do this from 6months up to 24 hours before your holiday departure date.

Just an update on Thomson transfers to and from resort.  Took us 1 hr 30 mins to resort, not too many drop offs.  Took 2 hours back to airport.  We had Lauren, Thomson rep on bus as she was working at the airport that day.  There was some confusion about people who had booked taxis to airport and hadn't let rep know, therefore we were turning up at apartments and there was no one to pick up.  Also another couple had booked a taxi and changed their minds at last minute, so we had to wait on the coach whilst a mini bus went to pick them up to meet our coach!!  Please, if you want to alter your transfers, make sure that your rep is clear about this, as it causes a lot of frustration for probably 50 other people driving around resorts for nothing!!  On a good note, the drivers were much better and seemed to know where they were going this year!!

San Stefanos news and views / Re: best week we could have had!!!!
« on: July 16, 2011, 06:08:32 PM »
Just back yesterday from a fortnight.  Had a fantastic time even though it was our 8th time there.  We struggled with the heat and humidity the last few days, but still did not want to come home.  Prices hadn't altered much in our opinion.  Ate at the Nafisika, as always.  They have a new chef there and the food was even better than the previous years.  Had drinks in Bar 38, Condor and finishing at Athens bar, which was just over the road from where we were staying.  The beach was lovely and quite wide and the sea was like a luke warm bath.  Most days it was very still.  As Lesley commented in another thread, please be wary in the current heat and keep in the shade with a cool drink or ice cream!  Happy hols to everyone! ;)

Lesley, that is good advice.  We arrived back last night and for 3 days last week we barely left the apartment as the heat and humidity were just too much. If you cannot stand that temperature, you will most certainly need air con.  My husband had slight heatstroke although he kept out of the sun on the really hot days.  Have to agree though, the sea was very welcoming and my advice is to keep in and out of the sea to cool down if you do go on the beach!  We have come back to torrential rain today so that is a bit of relief, but would still love to be back in San Stef!!  Missing it already! ;)

Just wondering if anyone knows what the Thomson transfers are like this year.  Last year it took 3 hours because the driver did not know where he was going! ??? Going back to airport was 2.5 hours.  Just hope it's better this year, although we have to 'go with flow'!! (2 more sleeps!! :))

We are going for our 8th visit to SS on 1st July.  We are lucky enough to have 3 holidays per year, but SS is what we call our 'chilling out' holiday!  We have been to several other Greek islands.  My first with John was Lesvos, which we loved.  It was very similar to SS with the 'family like' atmosphere.  We did return there after 2 years, but it was not as good as the first time.  We can't pull ourselves away from SS at the moment but who knows if we may get fed up with it someday!!  I think from our point of view, it is obviously the friendly atmosphere but also the feeling of safety in the resort.  I would not like to see too many changes in the resort, as I think it could easily be spoilt for some of us.  Anyway, 6 more sleeps for us, if I can manage to sleep!!

Hi
When I was there this year I walked almost to the end of the beach (past the Havana bar) and found what looks like some ancient ruins in the hillside. It looked a bit like an old wall of some sort, lots of pottery stuck in it.
Does anyone know what that was? I was just curious...

I know the bricks you are talking about.  Thats normally where we 'park' ourselves on the beach and I noticed them last year.  I like you, would like to think they are old ruins but my husband (having been in the building trade) thinks they are probably footings from a building that's not particularly ancient.  Well done for being observant though!!

Thanks Debra for the detailed reply.  Glad Costas is doing so well!  Will make the effort to visit him this year when we're feeling energetic enough for the walk! :)  Thanks Tony for your opinion too.

We almost always eat at Nafsika.  Our opinion is that it is rustic and Spiros and his staff are very welcoming. We love the Greek traditional food and atmosphere there.  You can eat outside or inside, but we prefer outside.  We normally don't eat until about 9.30 to 10pm when it is very quiet.  Everybodys' taste is different and we personally don't think you will have a bad meal or experience in any of the restaurants there.  Try them all while you are there, you will soon find your favourite/s.  Have a great holiday!!
