In case you haven't heard the news, it looks as though the requirement to power-up electronic devices at Security, originally applying to USA flights only, may be extended to all flights.
We'll certainly leave 30 minutes earlier than we would have done this Friday. Security at Doncaster is unsmiling and overly jobs-worthy at the best of times, so I shudder to think what it will be like if they're told to step up their zeal. They usually insist on swabbing my Kindle and making me sign a log-book. Gillie's hand-bag is frequently disassembled.
The underlying reason is that the high-density batteries in modern devices are the obvious thing to replace with explosives.
Duh!

I'm flying from.Doncaster on Friday too 2.15pm flight ! Never flown from the airport so thanks.for the heads up....Looks like I will be changing the taxi time again lol....but I'm all for extra security....hate flying lol

Hi, Louise,
We'll be on the same 14:10 flight! I'll wear a forum sticker, so maybe we'll see you in the departure lounge - come and say hello.
Donny is a nice airport to fly from. It's small (only 6 gates) and has lots of car parking space right outside the terminal. It's only a few miles on small roads from the M18/M180 to the airport, and next year the new motorway spur will go straight from the M18 to the airport.
There's not a lot of shopping to be had (basically Duty Free and WH Smith), but there is a Weatherspoons for a bit of lunch and a drink, and a kiddies' play area if you fancy a spot of fun before departure.
So far, we haven't had any delays on many trips. Fingers crossed! Flight time from Robin Hood to Corfu is 2 hours 55 minutes, and the route is over Amsterdam, Austria and down the Adriatic, so even if the French air traffic controllers strike, it won't affect us. Wonderful views out of the left of of the plane flying down beside the Albanian coastal mountains. Don't be nervous - it's fun.
See you soon!

Whats the transfer time.like into resort???? Last time we came about 11yrs ago it felt like it took forever .... And felt like we would drop off the road it was so tight !!!!
We're staying at Barras

On a coach transfer can be from 1.5 hours upwards depending how many people are dropped off before you. By taxi / minibus about 50 minutes. They don't go through Sidari anymore so coach transfer not as horrendous as it was
-
Louise - Forum sticker on the left! I'm the rather distinguished-looking, tastily-slender, 5' 6" tall man (probably) carrying a red rucksack - accompanied by a beautiful blonde.
-
People reporting very quick transfers this year

We were about an hour and a half coming in on 27th June and they went through Sidari, but fortunately, not too many drop offs. About 2 hours going back to airport.

Get a taxi transfer, best 110 euros you'll spend.

I actually look forward to the coach journey. It's not about the cost. Another half an hour on the coach is rather nice and no burden whatsoever.

I have to agree Rod. The scenery is beautiful and it is fun watching the driver trying to negotiate the tight corners and bends!!
-
Have to agree We both enjoy the coach transfer , although one year we had a driver named Leo , he must have been an ex F 1 driver , didn't know a coach could go that fast backwards coming out of The Rose Garden
-
Transfer was fine on Friday, after a few drop-offs in Corfu Town and Dasia. About 1 hour 30 minutes.
Personally, I'd rather spend the money on food and drink.
-
We have found the transfers to be fine in recent years. We generally arrive at around 11.30 at the airport, and the journey is usually quite pleasant. As Jimbo says, more to spend on food and whatever takes your fancy?
-
Would still do coach transfers but for the travel sickness.
-
Was nice to see.u briefly jimbo on the coach :) hope u enjoyed your holiday

i know i may be being thick but with all the talk about phones being charged up our latest email from thomsons says all electrical goods in hand luggage - so that means my hairdryer?
-
No - Just stuff that has big batteries, like laptops, tablets, e-readers.
-
And mobiles?

Best in the flight bag. They don't seem to care about them in terms of X-Ray. Digital cameras also best in flight bag. It's a while since I was asked to turn anything on.
-
Never been asked to!

I have been in the past on business trips to Europe and the USA, but not for a long time.
There is - according to New Scientist - new technology that can identify explosives without all this hassle, but very few (unspecified) airports have it.
It's a crazy world, so this seems to me to be a minor irritation, and we should be glad that potential threats are taken seriously. How efficient it is we can't know, but at least there is a show of trying.

Don't want to scare you but ........! there is an article in the Telegraph with the headline "Gatwick Airport baggage chaos,holiday-makers face flying without luggage" It appears that Swissport ,who are on zero hours contract, are short of staff made worse at the weekend as they don't want to work unsocial hours. Some people who flew out last weekend are still without their luggage. Gatwick warns that the situation could be worse this coming weekend and could go on for four months. Not only that but people are having to wait up to four hours for baggage after landing back at Gatwick.
Might be a good idea to pack a few essential items of clothing in hand luggage.Hope I haven't scared you too much, you can read the whole article on line.
-
Read that Dupnica,Monarch have cancelled their contract with Swissport, and are supplying their own handlers, terrible situation >:(

Yes they have but are tied into their contract for another 120 days.

Last year we were travelling with Thomson and the coach transfer took well over an hour. This year we travelled independently and Maria (at Peli & Maria's) booked a taxi for us. It was fantastic just going straight to Agios Stefanos without all the stop offs, or more importantly, sitting on the coach at the airport waiting for all the other people to finally get though baggage etc and get on the coach. The taxi took around 45 minutes and we were still able to enjoy the wonderful countryside. It cost 50 Euros.
At Corfu airport on the way home, I was stopped at the security bit you go through as I'd set off the alarm. The security woman told me to take off all my jewellery and come through again. She was still not happy and I got a full frisk pat down. She went everywhere including inside my bra! First time in all my decades of travel to be frisked. She did it twice, then shrugged, and told me it was ok. My husband was standing watching this laughing!

Worst airport security i had waw many years ago, when i was 18..went to majorca with my parents and family..Being a jumpt up teanager i was in my black leather jacket and was definatley not walking with my parents..I was stoped going through customs into majorca.
was told to open my case while they had a look through everything, being very confident they wouldnt find anything i was astounded that they found ladies underware, holding it in the air for all others to see.
I did not know my mother had placed some of hers in my case as she had no room, red faced i left the building with my ego totally shot.
-
I wonder if it's the underwiring in bras that sometimes sets off the alarm,I'm always getting frisked.
-
Talking to a friend who works at Brussels airport who is on the security says there is no problem regardind kindles ,phones etc.they just go through scanners as normal.their machines can detect explosives via a colour code displayed on screen.so we should not have any probs i hope.
-
Brussels will probably have the latest equipment to protect the European politicians, even if it's extremely expensive. It's definitely major airport only kit!

Good to hear about the new motorway spur Jimbo, it was a real pain going through the housing estates of Doncaster to get to the airport.
I love Doncaster airport, it's the only airport I know where you can park next to your aircraft! OK bit if an exaggeration but you can park so close to the terminal it's great, not like Manchester where you end up parking 5 miles away and they still call it 'on site'!
Much prefer the smaller airports but sometimes price drives us to grotty Manchester and it's 15 minute walk to the Easyjet gate, always gets Gill in a mood that does.

Robin Hood came joint first in the best small airport category this year.
Pay a little extra as I do for Priority Parking and you can park literally next to the terminal building, which should please Gill.
Another Gill-pleaser is that there is now a smoking area at ground level with a good view of the runway. Plus the facts that the walking distance from the departure lounge to the gates is zero yards, and from the gates to the planes is only about 20 yards. Definitely the UK's premier airport for princesses! :)
-
Princess?? Moi?? :)
Good to hear there is now a smoking area!!
Looking forward to seeing you and your lovely wife at the end of September.
