San Stefanos news and views / Re: WEATHER FORCAST - NEXT WEEK

September is thunderstorm season in Corfu and you are lucky if you go for a fortnight in September and dont see any rain, having said that San Steph is a lot drier than Corfu Town and the East Coast.

Cheers,

Andy

Where to stay / Re: Rose Garden Two Bed.
« on: September 05, 2009, 07:25:46 PM »
Hi Lilolil

We stayed in the two bed apartment last September and we couldn't fault the accommodation.

Not sure how many 2 beds they have but ours was on the front overlooking the pool with wonderful views to the hills beyond.

The balcony is HUGE, both bedrooms are of a good size with plenty of storage (both have patio doors onto the balcony), really nice kitchen and typical greek bathroom.

Would not hesitate in going back.

We found August last year quieter than July this year (at night).

We were told that a lot of Eastern Europeans go in August but tend to eat in every evening.

Hi Clairedavis

How true is this. No matter where you sit the smoke always seems to go straight to a non smoker!!

We go out with friends and he is an ex very anti smoker - but no matter where we sit around the table the smoke seems to follow him!! His wife and I spend all evening fanning the smoke - to no avail!!

I never wish to annoy others when out and hope that I do consider non smokers, but there are times when you can forget - but do not intentionally mean to offend.

Hi Tonyco1

Yes I am what you would call a 'dreaded smoker'!!

However, for once it it lovely to go somewhere ie Greece and not be treated as if we are the scum of the earth!!

It is great to be able to light up after a meal and enjoy a ciggie - even though i know they are bad for you - but this is my choice.

In SS I can smoke outside and, therefore, for once I think non smokers should be more accommodating to smoker's feelings. if they don't like it they can always sit in the non smoking area - which every Tarverna now has!

I do not want to offend non smokers, but at least in Greece there is always a happy medium - unlike in this country!

Hi JulesT

I bought one just before we went to SS and we found it really useful.

We stayed at the Teresa's and could pick up wifi there, plus hubby wuld take it to the Condor (when the heat got too much!), and could log on there. I think most places should be ok as corfu.net have a coverage even if the bar doesn't have it's own.

I know it is quite sad, but I do like to know what is going on in the world, plus you can keep an eye on this forum!!

Also, I could email work and keep rubbing it in as to how much of a wonderful time I was having. Must say their replies were not as friendly!!

Does anyone know about the recent smoking ban & how does it effect us dirty smokers?

Hi

The ban in Greece is not the same as the ban in the UK. If an establishment is under a certain size and totally enclosed - they can choose to be smoking or non smoking, and from what we were told by our greek friend, the majority have gone with smoking, they don't want to lose their Greek customers in the winter.

If it is larger (not too sure on the size), there has to be a non smoking area (this is usually the inside of the Tarverna/bar). At the moment it is not too bad as most people sit outside so everyone (well almost), is happy!!

The problem will be at the end of the season when the nights get chilly!!! Not sure what the Tarvernas will do when it is too cold to eat outside but smoking is not allowed inside!! Knowing the Greeks they will get round it somehow.

Also, at the moment the law is not very well enforced - especially on the islands (chances are they are stricter in Athens). The Greeks have apparently taken on 30 non smoking enforcement officers, to check establishments and to see if they are obeying the law - the only problem with this is the 30 officers cover the whole of Greece!!

Brilliant!!!

Where to stay / Re: TERESA APARTMENTS
« on: August 06, 2009, 01:12:50 AM »
Hi Jules

Yes we could have asked I suppose, but the family was always so busy and we didn't want to be a pain!! Also, we kept thinking 'we will get fresh ones tomorrow'. I wasn't bothered about the bedding as much as the towels, because no matter how careful I am, I always struggle to keep white towels white!!

As I said the Teresa's is nice - I have stayed in far, far worse accommodation - but after staying in the B & B block, the SC apartment was a bit of a disappointment.

Hi Sunlover

We stayed in the Rose Gardens last September - they were lovely!! We had the two bedroomed to ourselves which had a huge double balcony overlooking the mountains/olive trees. The standard of accommodation was (in my opinion) much better, and fresh flowers were placed in the apartment regularly, which was a nice touch.

This September we are going to the Mythos (opposite the Rose Gardens). Never been inside but spoke to people who have stayed there and they said they were of a very high standard. No pool bar (not that it bothers me), but you can always nip across the road to the RG. Have already booked the Mythos again for next year as we managed to get it for a very good price - nearly £300 cheaper than the Teresa - and no killer hill!!

We have also looked around the Little Prince - these again are lovely - huge rooms and very well maintained. You used to be able to book via their web site (as well as through Thompsons), but we were told this year that Thompsons are thinking of taking all of the rooms - with the Penthouses possibly not being available to the Brits!!

Don't get me wrong the Teresa's is nice and you will have a lovely time but (again this is only my opinion), I think it is time they invested in doing up the apartments. I sort of felt that they know they have a very loyal following and have possibly started to take it for granted.

Hi Sunlover

We have stopped in both the B & B studios (last year) and the self catering apartments (this year). Both have fridges. The SC are typical Greek, two rings and only enough room to make basic snacks - but the Teresa bar have a really good and cheap menu so I doubt you will be wanting to cook!!

We were a bit disappointed this year with the accommodation. The apartment we were in was quite run down - needed a paint and some of the furniture replacing. The kitchen tops etc. were very tired as was the bathroom. Also we were there for two weeks - arrived on the Monday, clean towels on the Wednesday then no more towels for the rest of the holiday. We had to wash them in the shower at night and leave them to dry, which was a bit of a pain. It was the same with the bedding, we always make our own beds but on a few days they had been remade and I thought we had been given clean sheets, but the beds has just been remade for some reason!! The SC apartments are basic, with fantastic views but we felt that the B & B studios are of a better standard.

Also be warned, if the previous occupants have not left any toilet paper there will be none in your apartment on your arrival - caught us out the first time!!

Having said this the food served is good and the Greek night is well worth going to but I doubt we will stop there again having discovered other accommodation in the village. No matter what - you will have a fantastic time because you are in SS!!

Hi Missh

So sorry to hear what Thomas Cook have done! We are booked to stay at the Mythos in September so I hope that there is nothing seriously wrong!

Thomas Cook also go to the Vicky Apartments and the Kapentanios in San Steph. I would try to see if there are rooms available at one of these and asked TC to put you there.

We have just returned from SS and the resort was alot quieter than usual so there may be a chance that either of these two may have empty apartments.

Just checked the TC website and the Mythos is still being sold - to fly out on Monday, but only for a 7 night stay - chances are TC have overbooked your accommodation!

If you have no joy with the above, I would suggest that you request Arilas instead - a MUCH nicer resort than Sidari. We were told while in SS that the Tour Operators are struggling to fill Sidari and now push the accommodation here before other resorts.

Good luck, and whatever happens I hope you have a lovely holiday.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Summer Dreams Taverna
« on: July 17, 2009, 12:27:45 AM »
I agree its in a good location.

I think (apart from it always being empty), what put me off is that is seems quite dark and gloomy - only because of the vines etc.

I may pluck up courage and go next time I am in SS, as I do feel sorry for the Tavernas which appear to be struggling.

Has anyone ever been to this Taverna?

It is across the road from the Zest for Life juice bar. Everytime we walked passed it was empty and I have never seen any reviews about it.

I must admit it never looked very inviting but it seems strange that no one ever mentions it!

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Zimmer's Dinner's
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:48:08 PM »
Having worked in the catering business, I know that if a Restaurant has a large menu, then a lot of the food will be 'pinged'. You cannot have pans and pans full of fresh food sitting around hoping people will order them.

I know that the Olive Press used to (may still do, but didn't go this year), only cook fresh everyday. The choice was limited and when it was gone 'it was gone'. You cannot do this if you have a huge range of meals on your menu.

Therefore, the smaller the menu, the far greater chance that the food is prepared fresh that day.

I don't think Zimmer was that bad, sometimes I feel we take some posts too personally, especially when you love SS!!

What I like about this forum is that we can post both positive and negative reviews. The Agni site has started removing posts which have the slightest criticism of Corfu. This to me is wrong. How can people make an informed decision about a place if all they read is how wonderful everything is?

I know a negative thread can make peoples passions boil, but as long as we do not cause offence or make things personal, I believe we are all entitled to our own opinion.

The world is not perfect - and although I love SS to bits, I can understand some people not 'getting it'.
