Title: Corfu in October
Post by: julied on June 12, 2012, 02:54:36 PM
Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me why it is so much more expensive to fly from Manchester for a week in October than say Leeds or any
other airport.
October 5th from Manchester staying in the Tsaros £490. To fly from Leeds/Bradford £292
I am just giving this as an example as all other apartments are still a lot more expensive.
I havnt paid that for 2 weeks in August.

You're right. I just stuck it in the Thomson web site.

Manchester: £490
Gatwick     : £337
E/Midlands : £306
Leeds/B     : £292
Doncaster  : £274
Brum         : £265

Next week it will all be different. Thomsons' prices are like a roulette wheel. Maybe it needs extra fuel to take off in the rain?

thought I would check last week of the season 19th October to see if this was more reasonable
I think the Tsaros must have closed for the season but the prices get more expensive

1 week Teresas flying from Manchester £631 flying from Leeds/Bradford £289 I cannot believe
this is  more than double as the airports are only about 30 miles apart.

Maybe they are hoping no one will want to fly from Manchester so they can cancel the flight

Our holiday this year to the Nafsica same day was £250 more on the same day from Manchester than Birmingam although our taxi is £50 more to Birmingham than Manchester still a saving of £200 again for next year saved roughly same amount and better flight time from Birmingham luckily living in Sheffield have a good choice of airports just can't understand the huge differences in price. Also since I booked couple of weeks ago price is £140 more same holiday

We've been going to Agios Stefanos for the last 20+ years, last year did a long weekend towards the end of October - never again. Cold, wet, empty and mostly closed.

But we're all different, I'm sure there are those who like it that time of year.

We were there for three weeks- late September - back on October 14th. Fabulous weather. Little Prince still rocking every night!

I went on the 17th October last year to Arillas and had a really good week, weather was gorgeous most days but
very cold in the evening and not a great deal open, there was still one week left of the season but they would have
been very limited as to where they could eat. I do think that when people are booking these last couple of weeks
of the season they should be made aware of the limited facilities by the tour operators as when I was there a family
of five arrived and they were so  disappointed at most things being closed

I was there last October for the last week of the seaon. We arrived in a terrific storm and wondered what are we doing here in October.Later that day the rain stopped and the rest of the week the weather was glorious.Ate mostly at the Beachcomer as it was one of the few Tavernas open.Had a meal at Ozzie Oils but it was only open at the weekend.Spent the evenings in the Thomas Bay which was the focal point for all the remaining visitors.Had a great week and got in a lot of walking but would have been  struggling for things to do if the weather had broke.

The reason for the high prices at the end of October is supposed to be because it is the last school holiday of the summer.Where I come from it was always known as the spud bashing holiday(potato picking). The thing that does not make sense is that last year and I believe this year the Romanza contract with Thomsons stopped mid October. This I believe is happening all over the resort because Thomson do not like paying for rooms they cannot fill.As a consquence you end up paying top prices for a resort that is shutting down around you.

Like everything - check around for the best deal.
Whenever we go in October - the weather has always been good,
but one August there was a cloudburst and torrential rain with flooding in Sidari!

i stayed in Acharavi once for the last 2 weeks of the season, weather was good, and no real problem to eat out.The bonus for the kids was that the owners let them empty the ice cream freezer , didnt charge.

That is typical of the lovely people who live in Corfu.

Where else in the world would you get someone say that to you?

Or like back in the day, (as you know, I'm sure) , "pay me in the morning" - then it's "well what did you have?"
It's - well, I don't know - so you guess and maybe add a drink too many  - just in case - only to be told - "don't worry, you pay for these - I will pay for these" - -
and your new Greek friend buys you some of the drinks - - amazing memories and good times before it got a bit more commercial pre-Thomsons.

Weather could be anything from constant sun to constant rain. First two weeks of October last year were hot and sunny.

We have done a few Octobers, only an odd day of rain, mostly Sunny, some establishments close during October if numbers drop,
most are open, quieter generally - but OK, last week of season is quiet.

£277 each is a great price - I take it that that is the base price as T/Cook like Thomsons then put the extras on like luggage, meals, Etc ... Etc...
still very good even if there are some add-ons!! Well done!

Another warm sunny day today with a light breeze, the temperature is a good 5c above average reaching 27c this afternoon, the forecast is for similar weather for the next 10 days. Coming in October is however a risk and i have known several Octobers that saw a lot more rain than sun, my advice is go at the same time as Jimbo, the sun follows him around! Andy

i used to always go last week in september first week in october.Had great weather, and some bad.
But it allowed you to get out and about more on foot without being baked alive, and was cooler for the kids also.
Just enjoy, will be better than at home.

It's significantly cooler now, with sometimes full cloud and sometimes patchy sun. The forecast are for increasing possibility of rain at the weekend.

Beach beds are vanishing daily. Many places will close on Friday, when there will be a mass exit from the village, with very few arrivals. Little Prince is closing on Friday, and Maria says she's closing on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Zorba is down to a few indoor or sheltered tables, and here at Nafsika meals have been inside since the high winds last week, but a small but cheerful band of hardy souls keeps the bar open until late. It looks like the population will be tiny next week.

"Patriccia" (sic) aka Kleopatra, who is the hairdresser in Avliotes and runs the evening bar at Nafsika, is doing "in your room" hair-dos, and has cut mine, reducing my usually ample beard to designer-stubble length, which wasn't quite what I had in mind. She justified it by saying that she didn't like beards!

So - life continues at a gentle pace. Nice.

It cooled down a lot for us too, it was 27c when with left Corfu and -1c when we got home :'(

I have had to scrap ice off the car every morning this week and now its raining again, I would return to the warm patchy sun in San Steph this weekend given half a chance!

Enjoy your last week.

Not much sun around here now. Storm started at 2pm yesterday - lightning and rain - and was still going at 1am when we went to bed.

Cloudy morning with heavy rain forecast.

Little Prince closed yesterday morning, Silver Star closed, just about everything closing. Our little band at Nafsica feels like survivors of a shipwreck!

Actually for people in San Stef next week the forecast isn't that bad once the current storms clear. Monday onwards should bring a mixture of sunshine and thunderstorms and it will be warmer than average for October.

Chris, give our regards to Hari and Demitri, you will love the Fedra Mare and if it does rain you will not mind being stuck in your apartment.

Hi Chris , I agree with you about people missing out who do not venture down the old part of Aghios Stefanos . It seems to be people who have been coming for many years ( before the Strip was built ) do prefer that end , maybe it is happy memories !
I expect that it will only be Manthos and his 'side kick ' Costa running the taverna now - please give them both my love . Have fun what ever the weather throws at you

Saturday morning was pleasantly sunny. The main entertainment was the laborious undertaking of getting the para-sailing platforms out of the sea.

First they detached the two halves and dragged one through the sea down towards the car park. Meanwhile, in the car park the digger was pushing sand back up towards Perdita's to flatten that end of the car park to make room. At this point a middle-aged woman wearing black appeared rather perilously at the top of the ten-feet high potential avalanche of sand and started shouting at the driver. He stopped digging and they then embarked on a thirty-minute argument with a lot of arm waving.

Meanwhile, the first half of the platform had now been successfully dragged through the sea, and was poised like a landing-craft just off the car park, with two men trying hard to control it in the surf near the edge. The argument still raged, and, watched by one small child, two dogs, and Gillie and me, the chorus of shouting was joined by a couple of tenors in the waves.

Eventually the woman gave up, the digger proceeded down the beach, and they made an attempt to harness the shovel to the raft and heave the front up.

The rafts are an interesting, ingenious construction clearly never designed to take this kind of strain, and for agonising (or hilarious, depending on your point of view) seconds it looked as though it would break in half. However, as the moment grew ever closer, sanity prevailed and a lengthy period of argument and re-examination of the engineering possibilities took place. Finally, a balanced lift to the front was achieved, and the digger began slowly to drag the cumbersome platform out of the sea and across the car park.

The car park contained only two vehicles: the digger and a purple quad-bike, which was strategically parked right in the path of the digger-platform behemoth that was backing at increasing velocity towards it. "Oh joy!" we thought, "They're just going to mash it!" But at the very last moment, one of the men ran past the digger and pushed the quad-bike out of the way, and the platform was deposited in its winter home. But all was not over: the digger lifted one side and then the other, and big polystyrene blocks were tumbled from some storage point atop the dunes, and placed under the platform, lifting it out of danger of winter tides.

We then retired to Mistral for an omelette and glass of vino to watch the progress of the second platform chunk from a comfortable distance.

Children and dogs wandered off, the digger departed, and we could safely say that there can be no more para-sailing until 2013.

Jimbo - you are just so funny - was laughing out loud whilst reading your description of the removal of the para sailing platforms.  I have but one question, is the purple quad still there?

Really hope the TV programme doesn't attract too many weddings - our son booked his last year for August 1st 2013 and it is hard enough for the guests to find suitable accommodation - I personally have given up and left them to it - in search of no hill, good pool, etc etc!!!

In previous years they used to store the Platforms between the Athina and Mango.
However, the destruction of their old Kantina in the winter storms a couple of years back, must have sent a strong message for re-location in the winter.
Lets hope the winter is kind this year and there is no tsunami in Corfu!!
Other wise the platforms may end up in Nondas Pool!!

For many years I holidayed in SS, having two weeks May/June and a week in October.  I always avoided the half term week for obvious reasons, but even though the weather wasn't always the best it was still warm and just such a lovely break to get ready for the winter ahead.

I just love San Stefanos whatever the weather, it's all down to the wonderful people I meet  :D

I hope to be there next June!  8)
