Jaxbubbles - what a lovely review.  We are going on Friday and are also staying at Teresa's for the first time.  Have requested a room with a sea view on a high floor - really looking forward to it and need destressing.  this will be our third time in San Stefanos but the first at Teresa's we normally book independently but thought we would have a change as we have also been to the bbq night there and it was wonderful and what a lovely family they are.  Will put my review on when we get back

Hi julied

We also arrive on the 24th August flying from Manchester this will be our thrid visit.  We always take euros with us and keep them in the safe.  The company we use and have used for the past four years everytime we go away is Travel Fx Ltd all you do is go online and fill in the details and they will send you an email straight back or you can ring them and they will tell you how much you will get for whatever amout you are exchanging and if it is over £500 it is commission free with free special delivery next day .  I will be ordering mine from them tomorrow.  They then send you their bank details and you just either go online and do it through your bank or go into your bank and give them the details. It is really easy - I have used them twice already this year and never have I had a problem.  Their contact details are:

Hi Lizzie - we were in Elounda last September and visited Spinalonga. We only went because after reading Victoria Hislop's the Island I wanted to go and see it for myself.  I found it really weird after reading the book and being there as you felt you knew the place and could imagine the people that lived there. the worst part for me was walking through the tunnel it made me feel really sad as I imagined all the people that had gone through it and sent a shiver down my spine.  We spent about 3 hours there and would definitely recommend it. If anyone wanted to go I would advise you to go over on a boat yourself and come back when you want.  If you go with the organised tours you dont get to spend much time there and also going on your own means you can just wonder around as you please and return when you want and is also a lot cheaper. Also remember to take water as they dont sell it there.

It was whilst I was in Elounda that someone told me about the Beryl Darby books.

Rover I have read your comments and agree with most of them but if you are refering to me in your comment 'not moan because they do not feature the Hotel/appartment they wish to book' I would just like to say that I wasn't moaning because they didnt feature the hotel I wanted it was a case of I was going to book it because it was showing as available but when I went back on it an hour later it had gone so I rang up Thomsons and they told me they didnt have that hotel available anymore - they had all sold out.  It was when I went back on again on the Monday to book something else it was showing the room I wanted at the same hotel I wanted to book on the Friday was available again but not only was it available they had three twin rooms b&b available and have had availability right up until two weeks ago.  What I couldnt understand is where did they get these rooms from if I was told when I rang up they had all sold out!!! If I had listened to the guy at Thomsons on the Friday evening and booked a different hotel then I would have been disappointed to see the hotel I wanted to book originally available again on the Monday. It just doesnt make sense to me. Also it was for the same dates and from the same airport.

I might also add that I have travelled in the past with Thomsons and Thomas Cook and have found no problem with them at all and this time we have got an excellent price with them although I do like to book independently also for the sake of the local hoteliers.

Lizzie - I have read The Island by Victoria Hislop and also her other two books. I thought The Island was excellent but that was untill someone told me about a series of books by Beryl Darby see link http://www.beryldarbybooks.com/

Her books were written before Victoria Hislop's and there are about ten in the series.  They start off with the first one Yannis which is based on Spinalonga - dont be put off though it is about 750 pages and I thought I am never going to get through that but I read it in two weeks couldnt put it down. It is  compelling story of Yannis, who comes from the village of Plaka on the island of Crete. He attends school in the town of Aghios Nikolaos and gains a scholarship to the Gymnasium in Heraklion. Whilst in Heraklion, he is diagnosed with leprosy, shattering his dreams of becoming an archaeologist. He is admitted to the local hospital for treatment and subsequently transferred to the hospital in Athens. The conditions in the hospital are appalling; overcrowding, lack of amenities, poor food and only basic medication. The inmates finally rebel, resulting in their exile to Spinalonga, a leper colony just across the water from Yannis’s home village. This book tells the heart rendering account of his life on the small island, his struggle for survival his loves and losses along with that of his family on the mainland from 1918 to 1979. All the events described are true. The school teacher who became the Mayor of Heraklion is entirely fictitious, as are all the characters.

The other books carry on with the other family members the second one being Anna his sister which I have just finished reading and is also a cant put it down book.  I have just ordered the third in the series Giovanni.

You can only buy these from Waterstones or direct from the publisher and they are £7.99 each but are excellent but you do need to read them in order as they refer back to the ones before.

Agree with you Tony - we have booked the Tereza for 24 August this year for two weeks.  It will be our third time in SS but first at Terezas as we have booked independently before.  We monitored the price online with Thomsons for about two months then saw it at a bargain price but my husband was out so waited till he got home before booking just to check date was okay. This was on on the Friday evening  but when we went back on line that eveening Thomson were saying they had no availability so we were really disappointed as we thought we had lost it.  It then came back on the system on the Monday so we booked it.

It seems they take hotels on and off as they please which is so unfair the the Hotel owners as they could also be missing out on bookings as we could of booked another hotel thinking that the Terezas had not availability. Dont know why they do it - wonder if the Hotel Owners are aware they do this - suppose there is nothing they could do about it though!!

Hi thanks for the replies.

Lesley I have had a look at the timetable and have put a link here to it http://www.ktelkerkyras.gr/?module=default&pages_id=7&lang=el

It tellsyou where they depart from/to but doesnt give you a route where the bus stops inbetween.  I presume looking at the timetable if we got the 0905 from AG to Corfu Town it  would arrive in Sidari at 0925 as that is the time that the bus departs from Sidari to Corfu Town. Dont know what times though that it would return as the timetable only give you the times from Corfu back again. dont know if anyone knows the stop off points and back.  We just wanted to see the other places which are nearby.  thanks

Hi this will be our third time in San Stefanos but was just wanting to know can you get a bus from outside Barras as I know the bus stops there that goes to Corfu Town.  I dont want to go to Corfu Town but would like to maybe go to Sidari or Roda as we havent been there and dont want to hire a car or bike. So what I want to know is does the bus that goes to Corfu Town stop at these places or indeed other places so we could go to have a look round or does it go straight into Corfu Town.  If so does anyone know the times there and back Thanks

We also thought we would never go to the same place twice as there are so many lovely places but this will be our third time in a row to San Stefanos although we do go to other places. fell in love with it first time.  Staying at Terezas this year for the first time end August beginning September for two weeks.  Have been to their bbq before but not stayed with them before as usually gone independent but got a really good price with Thomson's and last year when we were in San Stefanos there was the taxi strike so was a bit worried about getting back. Cant wait!!
