Title: Ramblings from Corfu - Part 1
Post by: richnsare on September 10, 2012, 06:36:58 PM
Well its been a few years since I wanted to do this and after reading the Rambling From Rhodes books (and website) by John Manuel I decided I would do the same from Corfu this year. So here is my first attempt at a blog and if the feedback is positive we might get all 14 days added as the holiday progresses. Please take a look at the blog on my website:

http://www.lovecorfu.com/blog2012/index.html#home (http://www.lovecorfu.com/blog2012/index.html#home)

The website needs a fair bit of work, but it acts as a good vehicle for the blog. Please also check out John Manuel's work. His books can be found on Amazon, and other reputible sites no doubt.

Thanks for taking the time.

Yammas.

Good stuff. I'm not surprised you were bitten by mozzies after taking B12. All the science shows it to be a complete myth. For example:

Quote
Vitamin B is often recommended in the popular media as a systemic repellent against mosquitoes. This information is especially prevalent on the Web. The results of a small number of published studies suggested that vitamin B complex supplements are not effective as repellents, but these studies were limited by the use of very few human subjects and only 1 species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti. We extended this work with the use of larger samples of human subjects and with Anopheles stephensi as the test organism. We tested whether ingestion of vitamin B supplements under various regimens affected the attractiveness of volatile skin components transferred to glass vials. Although there was substantial and consistent individual variation in attractiveness, we found no effect of vitamin B supplementation.

Great read Richard, keep it coming.

I had the same problem as your wife this year.  16 bites in first 2 days, OH never had 1!  I had sprays, wipes, candles, plug-ins and was eating tzatziki until it came out of my ears (garlic) and also have B12 injections every 3 months for a condition I have but nothing worked!  Young girl in bar gave me a wrist band and hey ho no further bites for rest of holiday!!  I looked like a pack of dominos to start off with  ;D

Only place we had problems with mossies was at Nafsika each time we ate there .Please don`t take this as a hit at Speros must have been where we were sat.

The mossies were pretty bad when we were there - I got away with just one - which I got as I sat at the ice cream parlour!  Jungle Formula extra strength (morning and night) and Boots aftersun with insect repellant, seems to work OK for us.

Thank you all for the positive comments, part 2 coming very soon.

Jimbo, thanks for the mozzie advice, interesting reading. We always take advice like this with a pinch of salt but in previous years it seemed to keep the little blighters at bay. Perhaps our Ouzo levels have dropped this year? Right, we're only half way through the jollies and we know how to rectify that!! :)
