San Stefanos news and views / Re: This year's holiday promises.
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:28:19 PM »
As has been said on this site so many times, everything is so personal, however just an observation ......with regard to Ozzie Oils and bbq night.I love this place and think Kery's singing is as fantastic as the food there. The welcome is always warm as well! I have attended bbq nights for many years now and had a really good night. However last year I went along and found that there was a quiz going on after the food service and before  Kerry sang. I found the style of this particular quiz very intrusive and it really spoiled our evening there. ( I am normally a very happy quizzer!)  It's just an observation, but it was sufficiently bad to make us cancel our booking for the bbq the following week. I would still thoroughly recommend this restaurant and think it is well worth a visit or two, but unless you are happy with an experience which is a little more Thomas Bay than the original Ozzie Oils maybe avoid the bbq night. Then again ... if that's your thing it may well be an added attraction for you.

Information and help please / Re: Launderette?
« on: February 18, 2014, 05:04:14 PM »
There is a washing service, not so much a launderette. You drop off your bag of washing and collect it all done later. I think last year it was about 8 euros a bag.
The guys who run this service operate from a place next to 3 W bar. They also run the olive wood shop next door to it.
Navigating from Tasty Corner (on the t junction in the village) you take the road towards Arillas, the opposite way from the beach and its just along there on the right.
I have never used the service, but people who have have said its good and quick.

« on: January 31, 2014, 10:34:07 PM »
As a teacher of 39 years experience I can fully endorse the idea of taking children to visit other countries and cultures. I feel wholeheatedly that during the last week of the summer term in particular it seems like a good idea to take children out of school and frankly, if I had not been a teacher when my own children were young, I would have taken them out. I think that parents should be given the opportunity to take their children out of school for a fortnight a year if they so desire and if their child has reasonable attendance overall. Most teachers that I know would agree with this.
I do understand that nobody understands the ins and outs of various occupations until they have walked a mile in someone else's shoes... but training days are not the choice of teachers! They were imposed by the government some years ago. Some  training days that I have attended have been useful and helped me to develop as a teacher in many ways. Some have been a complete waste of time, but whether useful or not they are not my choice. I would often much rather have been teaching rather than listening to some half baked idea about the latest idea in teaching.

With regard to inclement weather..... In all of my years of teaching I have had a total of 7 days off school because of the weather! Most of these are in recent years when because of us being on a split site the health and safety "experts" have been out in force and prevented us opening in case some child falls over!
Please don't bash teachers over this ruling ... Look at who you vote for.

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Best Bar None
« on: January 30, 2014, 01:25:17 AM »
This is so personal. Even more than taverns I think. Kamini is so chilled and Michaeli and the boys just let you be. Great for an early evening or a late night drink. It's also probably the cheapest as a rule and measures are amazing. Glenn"s is where I always feel particularly safe (especially when I am on my own as I stay in as for many weeks without my partner. Glenn always makes me feel welcome and there are always people to chat to. Good music too which Glenn changes to suit the customers in at the time. Athens is great for live music and if I feel in need of a noisier fix. Except I don't like the footy on !!!!
I find bar 38 a little too young now and although decor is good I think the bar could be anywhere. Can't comment on silver star. I have never used it in 14 years in the village.
El greco is fine but again has footy sometimes which is great if you like footy I suppose !
I love to go up to the bars on.the headland for the amazing views and atmosphere.
For me 3 w is special because of Margarita. She is always so helpful and welcoming. It doesn't really have a DIP unless it's her I suppose. I go.there for coffee or a post beach beer or pre or after dinner drinks.

Got to say it depends on what mood I am in. Really enjoy Yiannis grill room, Nafsika, Ozzy Oils, Olympia, Tasty Corner if I just want a snack, Waves if I want fish and if I am in economy mode ...  2star. Will also eat at Zorbas and very rarely Little Prince, but never really disappointed anywhere. If I can get out to Afionas I love the nIght Owl. Amazing food and atmosphere.

Why is it considered miserable if you are  not at all interested in watching people run up and down kicking a ball ???? I don't like sport. I do like being fit. I am not interested in competition, I do like being healthy. If that makes me a miserable b ..... in some people's eyes then so be it.

I will be attempting to avoid it at all costs so any bar not screening it has my custom.

Must admit that several meals this year were affected by people smoking and I would very much appreciate no smoking areas however this was managed.

San Stefanos news and views / what is going on
« on: August 09, 2013, 09:59:01 PM »
Lots of people were asking earlier about

Entertainment in the village  . The usual tribute acts are on in the Condor and Acabar. Also Groucho is about on his own in El Greco and with Keith in Athens bar. SAD that Darren isn't at 3w but the act that is there on a Sunday night is good ( lots of rat pack stuff) and Margarita has introduced a 60"s 70"s and 80"s music night on Monday. All in all there still seems to be something for everyone.

Where to eat out in San Stefanos? / Re: Two Stars
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:35:40 PM »
I know it's all very personal, but I have to say that Two Star is the only place in the village that I have had a bad meal. I even went back on another night just in case they were having an off evening and had a second meal that was less than the standard of most meals in SS. I know it is always busy so lots of people must like it.

As Jimbo says it is all subjective.

for us 1. Nafsika
          2. olympia
          3 yiannis

but, apart from two star  (where i have had 2 very bad meals !) everywhere is great. Ozzy oils bbq deserves a special mention too.
Tasty Corner is also brilliant .

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Smoking while dining Alfresco ?
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:28:52 PM »
I agree totally with Baj. The trouble is that non smokers do NOT have any choice whether they smoke or not if smokers are indulging in their habit. Even if you aren't convinced about the health stuff you still end up smelling of it.
It might  be a silly comparison but I enjoy doing cross stitch and if I do it at the table it does not affect anyone else....... but if you choose to smoke I have to smell it too.  Not that I do cross stitch at the table as a rule.....(usually too busy eating and drinking and talking too much!)  but you get my drift!

San Stefanos news and views / Re: Litter & Rubbish On San Stef Beach
« on: March 10, 2013, 05:24:40 PM »
Iwould hate to put anyone off !
The majority of the beach is amazingly clean considering the number of people who use it and the state of the greek economy. The guys who run all of the sun bed concessions really do their part and the fact that many of them help by providing ash trays means that if you are on a sun bed you do not have other peoples' disgusting fag ends to deal with.
However the very far end really does get tatty. It's a price I am prepared to pay for my all over tan, but I often have to clear an area of "stuff" before I put my towel/mat down. The vast majority of the rubbish has obviously been brought in by the tide, not left by users of the beach.
I am aware that the sunbed guys have no incentive to clean up that end and would not expect them to. So I will carry on carrying my carrier bag and trying to do my bit.
<(sits back and awaits puns.)

I spend a good deal of my time down "the far end" and I must admit that I find the amount of litter and flotsam and jetsam down there quite depressing at times. I do take a carrier bag with me when I go down to  "that end" and tend to pick up litter and deposit it in a bin on my way back.
It would be great if it was cleaned up.
